It's Tronin' time!

After almost a decade of being in and out of development, a third Tron movie is finally moving forward at Disney.

Officially titled Tron: Ares, the threequel will star Jared Leto (Morbius, Suicide Squad), who's been attached to the project since 2017. No details on his role were provided.

We actually got word that the movie was on track (again) back in 2020 with Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene) set to helm, but THR is now reporting that Joachim Rønning has taken over as director. Jesse Wigutow penned the latest draft of the script.

Ares follows 2010's Tron: Legacy, but we don't know if it'll be a direct sequel or more of a relaunch of the franchise. Joseph Kosinski's movie was not particularly successful at the box office and drew mixed reviews from critics, but it developed a loyal following over the years, and fans have been clamouring for a third film for quite some time.

Previous reports have indicated that some or all of the cast of Legacy (Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde) might reprise their roles, but there's no mention of that here.

Rønning previously directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Espen Sandberg. He recently completed filming on the Daisy Ridley feature Young Woman and the Sea.

So to prepare for the role he'll literally upload himself into a game?

A hired hand director and one of the most overrated actors of all time, most likely without Daft Punk.. [frick] this movie, and I'm like THE BIGGEST TRON FAN. Kosinski would have at least been able to tell the sequel he wanted to. The rage..

@bobevanz - Ya I'm right with you, I love Tron and am a huge fan. This news about the director, writer and Leto actually pisses me off! Been dreaming about a 3rd movie for years and this is the garbage Disney brings, I'm actually really really pissed now ARGHHH.

Fun Fact I just learned: Kosinski directed the Gears of War: Madworld commercial years ago which is still one of my favorites of all-time.

@WarMonkey - i used to rewatch that gears ad on youtube religiously as a kid and i never even played the games outside of gears 3. just an incredible piece of advertising

@tmp3 - It was beautiful! 3 is up there with my favorite games of all-time and the "Dom scene" is the one time a video game actually made me cry.

@bobevanz - I've grown quite fond on Tron 2 and that soundtrack. The Bridges deaging is doesnt hold up well though...Kosinski will surely be missed in 3, but he's probably outgrown them.

You're on the money with Leto though way too overrated, but I won't lie, I hope to look that good when I'm 50. 😅.

Another expensive flop with Leto incoming..

@bobevanz - This terrifies me. I LOVED Tron Legacy. And I've been looking forward to this for so long...but damnit man, why Leto?! All I can do is wish upon a star that they pull this off. But if I'm being honest with myself, Leto has established a reputation of bad roles and I just don't see him as a lead pulling in audiences.

@dragon316 - Because sequels to things that happened years and even decades ago or so rare these days, right?

I hope Leto doesn’t play someone (or do something) weird.

@TheNewYorker - Rumor has it he's been cutting off body parts and replacing them with cybernetic components to prepare for the role. 😜

Joking aside, this guy is amazingly overrated and is box office poison.

they got a pitch from the director of legacy, who just directed the best blockbuster in years with top gun: maverick, as well as a pitch from the director of lion a few years back and they still wound up going with the maleficent 2 guy. what an epic fail lmfao

leto’s performance in house of gucci was so unbelievably [frick]ing strange that there’s a part of me intensely interested in what crazy shit he pulls here. looking at who’s directing it though he’s probably gonna sleep-walk through the role. it’s tronnin time.

Jared Leto said he loved Tron Legacy so much, he saw it in the theater 13 times. You should Google “Jared Leto 13” if you don’t believe me.

@WarMonkey - The only traps Jared Leto’s afraid of involve a surprise visit by Chris Hansen.

I feel like this team they brought in is a giant troll job on us Tron fans. We have asked for years for a sequel and even Kosinski and others had amazing ideas for one and they drop all that and go with these no-talent cheap company men. I was so excited yesterday when I saw news of this breaking but now that I see the creative team I'm very annoyed.

The charisma black hole that is Leto will sadly put this franchise to bed for good. Why have him in it? Studios can seriously still think he’s a draw can they?

so this one will be trash before they even make it, saves us the time of hoping for something great

Legacy was a decent movie and I wouldn’t have minded seeing more in that world. That being said, there are a lot of red flags with this one.

After Dallas Buyers Club Leto has really done everything to turn audiences off on him.
I don’t see this becoming a success for Disney.
They had a solid foundation after Legacy but these actors are now also either too old or persona non-grata.
They just waited way too long to move forward with Tron 3.

And given that Jeff Bridges probably can’t return given the ending of Legacy I don’t see old fans really giving a damn themselves.
My dad was still impressed by Legacy but at this point he’s all but given up on studio pictures.
