Tron: Legacy Director Divulges a Pile of Information

Director Joseph Kosinski talks about 3D, Jeff Bridges and possible sequels!

Although principal photography on the film is done, Kosinski is still hard at work on the visual effects for the 3D adventure, "Our approach is not like Avatar," says the director, "which I think is 3D from the first shot to the last. Ours is sort of a Wizard of Oz approach. Ninety-eight percent of the 3D is in the world of Tron. The 3D really starts once we get into the Tron world."

As a fan of the original 1982 classic, Kosinski wanted to take the designs of that movie and, "extrapolate it forward 28 years. We're saying in the world of the computer, it's been thousands of years and it has evolved."

He also went on to reveal that Jeff Bridges' character has also evolved...or rather, his characters, "Jeff is playing two characters. He's playing Kevin Flynn, the character from the original film, and he's playing Clu, the avatar that Kevin Flynn created in the 1980s. I'd say he's Clu 2.

"There was a Clu in the first film who looked like Jeff but was very simple in terms of his abilities. He's very stiff. Clu 2 is a second incarnation of Kevin's avatar. He doesn't only look like Jeff, but he can think like him too. So it's a whole new level of artificial intelligence."

Kosinski also says that he can see this being but the first in a new series of Tron movies!

Tron Legacy will be released on December 17 later this year!

Tron will blow Avatar off the floating rock next Christmas. The concepts are solid and the effects will easily rival.

@ Phineas: That's kind of a bold statement there man. Don't you think that's kind of a stretch? I mean Avatar is a money making power house. It's been on top for like a solid month. I bet Tron will do well but dang... not THAT well. lol

I look forward to seeing how this competes against Avatar's impressive 3D effects! Plus, it stars the stunning Olivia Wilde so I pretty much have to go and see it, lol!

DarthMulder (I'd respond to LEEE too, but he usually goes off the handle with excessive chanting.)

While that's a bold statement, Tron ALREADY has a following that Avatar didn't have. People are ecstatic to see where they can take a story like Tron with the effects they have today. Avatar's partial financial success was due in part to many going to IMAX and paying extra for it and 3D. I think the same thing will happen with Tron. It will be the winter powerhouse next year. It will have to be something equally monumental to keep that from happening. As far as I know, there is nothing slated of equal magnitude to open against it. The only thing I foresee that could impair it is a worsening of the economy.

avatar is avatar, tron is tron, rein in that inner geek a couple of steps guy. i made that mistake when i claimed lord of the rings would never top the new star wars episodes before they came out. allthough James Cameron is a f%@#ing A'hole, he's a genius sci fi visionary. its all in the direction. this guy whos directing tron....??? well for my sake i hope he hits it out of the park...tron is one of my all time favs but its called being realistic. and by the way ....true tron fans are in their forties now and it wasnt a big hit in its day.

While I appreciate your notions towards objectivity in regards to Tron overpowering Avatar, I think there is still merit to my side of the arguement, so I will further elaborate my point. Hopefully without belaboring it.
Consider your example of Star Wars and LOTR. Excellent example! But mind you, Star Wars still maintains a stronger following, despite the financial overthrow experienced at the box office. Furthermore, it seems that box office records today, as opposed to earlier decades, are being constantly challenged and beaten every couple of years(America is richer and more populated than it was 30 years ago, and go to the movies more often). As I said already, part of Avatars big financial push to superiority was due largely to word of mouth of "needing to see it in IMAX and/or 3D!"
Yes, Cameron is a visionary genious. But he is not a great writer of Sci Fi stories. In fact, he rehashes much of his own earlier themes our outright rips off other people's work. He, like the Tron director, was once a nobody too!
True TRON fans are indeed in their forties. While some are in their 40s, one needs to remember the advent of video and cable television provided new generations to spring up to watch these movies. Also, the forty yearolds have offspring.
Terminator wasn't that big of a hit in its day. Its sequel, almost ten years later, pummeled the box office as will Tron. People will go rent or buy the orignal before it comes out. Not to mention, the re-broadcasts will be on, Disney, SyFy, or larger networks throughout the fall.
Finally, what's wrong with being an optimist? Do you really wanna hear that clownish man spew out, "I'm the king of the world" BS again??
If I'm correct, I have bragging rights. If I'm wrong, few will remember my misprognostication. So who cares?!?
