SHANG-CHI Star Awkwafina Joins Nicolas Cage And Nicholas Hoult In Universal's RENFIELD

Universal Pictures and director Chris McKay's modern-day vampire movie, Renfield, has found its female lead in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings standout Awkwafina, who joins Nicholas Hoult as the titular character and Nicolas Cage as his master, Count Dracula.

This reimagining of the classic tale is expected to focus on Dracula and Renfield's "toxic and co-dependent relationship, bringing it to a modern-day setting in an adventure story that is comedic in tone." Awkwafina is playing an unnamed character who teams with Renfield to take on the legendary blood-sucker.

Ryan Ridley penned the script, which is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman. McKay will also produce alongside Samantha Nisenboim and Skybound Entertainment’s film team of Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.

In Bram Stoker's novel, R.M. Renfield was introduced as one of Dr. Seward's inmates who developed a taste for blood and became obsessed with "the master." Driven mad by the evil Count, Renfield became his willing acolyte, believing he would one day be given the gift of eternal life. The character has appeared in most adaptations of the classic tale, and has been played by the likes of Dwight Frye in 1931's Dracula and Tom Waits in Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version.

Renfield is currently scheduled to begin shooting next year in New Orleans.

If Nicolas Cage is on movie, that's all that matters for me.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula is all I need. Otherwise this wouldn’t even register

I'm gonna step out on a limb here and say she will probably add comic relief to stressful situations?

@Baf - Now "why" in the f#ck would you think something like that? It's not like she does this a lot, is it? Oh, she does? Okay; sorry.

She has never made me laugh, just another actor that brings me out of a movie. Will still see it for cage tho but shang chi was massively overrated

@Matchesz - So to be clear, Awkwafina brings you out of a movie, but Nic Cage doesn't? LOL

Hey, whatever floats your boat. I thought she was just okay in Shang Chi.

Somebody order comic relief and someone to tell the audience what’s going on

I like her but the character in Shang Chi was one big face palm

@bobevanz - I thought the opposite. I was expecting to be really annoyed by her in Shang Chi and she turned out to be great in it. Her jokes were funny to me and she didn’t annoy me. Only thing that maybe wasn’t great was how she was forced into every scene 😂

So is this a new attempt (post-Cruise-Mummy-disaster) to bring back the Shared Monster Universe at Universal? If so, Nic Cage as Dracula in a shared monster universe would be SICK! Bring it on.

I guess this is one of the seven movies Cage is going to shoot next year. I suppose this goes straight to video and on demand then. He hasn't paid off the IRS yet, it seems. Lol. I will still watch this, however.

Not the biggest fan of her, but I seriously admire how successful she's been the past few years. She's an Asian Kevin Hart lol
