Concept Art from Dead 1980’s Silver Surfer Movie

From the Marvel Comics: The Untold Story book, a chapter covers the failed Silver Surfer project that was to be a rock and roll based film (i.e. Howard the Duck). Hit the jump for details…

Lee Kramer, producer of Xanadu, had the incredible/dull idea of bringing the Surfer to the big screen. Movies.com reports that if he had gotten the project off the ground, it would have been a “cosmic rock opera”. Below is a concept image from the scrapped film.

“We’re going to make an epic picture on the scope of 2001: A Space Odyssey with the kind of soundtrack that that film had, only using contemporary rock and roll,” Kramer said at the time. “It’s even conceivable that the Surfer might have a chant or a fanfare made up of one thousand electric guitar. Doing the Silver Surfer has always been a dream of mine, and now it’s going to be realized.”

Thankfully/unfortunately, the film never saw the light of day. In fact, fans first saw the Surfer in the film Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. A story like this could be found in Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, scheduled to be in bookstores on October 9th 2012.

That's awesome, pretty much an 80's style heavy metal staring the surfer. I'm guessing joe satriani had something to do with it, at the same time he released surfing with the alien which has silver surfer on the cover

Needs to go back to Marvel , All these marvel characters not at marvel can only be a fraction of what they could be in the MCU . Surfer is only so so in the FF universe but in the MCU brushing up against Thor or in the Annihilators he becomes EPIC .

The contemporary rock n' roll music would've been a bit distracting, sorta reminds me of Flash Gordon, except it doesn't fit SS all that much. Still, that picture looks cool, and a 2001 tone would work, as long as they take it seriously and still have it be action-packed.

That's not necessarily true, characters like Spider-Man work better on a solo level.
I'd much rather the rights be retained by Sony so they can keep the same cast and director, then have Marvel get the rights so that there will be another rebooted Spider-Man just so that he and a few Marvel characters can cameo in each other's movies. Spider-Man doesn't need to be in The Avengers, he works better alone. Plus, if Marvel got the rights to Spider-Man back his movies would probably be more like Raimi's since Marvel movies tend to be more bright and upbeat and based on the original character. Raimi's movies had more of the feeling of the carefree and corny 60s, while Webb's Spider-Man movie is more contemporary.

for those who remember the ff4 cartoon in the 90's everytime the surfer appeared there was rock music in the background.

@CrimsonArk I do not agree wether alone or in a team all the Marvel characters live in the same universe in the comics , to only have Spiderman in his own universe lessens Spiderman and it also lessens the MCU where he belongs .

I like the 'Prometheus' comments.. Kinda like when the prometheus screenshots first arrived and people looked at their spacesuits and were like "fantastic four?'
