SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Takes Aim At $35 Million+ Opening; Plus New Clip Unites The Spiders
Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is widely expected to win the weekend box office with a solid $35 million debut, which should easily swing it past fellow newcomers The Mule and Mortal Engines.
Sony's critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is set to kickstart the holiday movie season with a solid debut in the $35 million range, a figure that could get significantly bigger by Sunday evening due to glowing reviews and an extremely positive word-of-mouth.
The Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-produced film, which cost just around $90 million to make (without P&A), should easily top both Clint Eastwood's The Mule, which is expected to debut in the $15 million to $20 million range, and the Peter Jackson-backed Mortal Engines, which is gearing up to be a massive disappointment with a launch in the $10 million to $17 million range.
The animated superhero feature, which was co-directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, tells the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and takes him on a dimension-shattering adventure as he partners with a number of Spider-people from different universes, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), to take down the villainous Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) and his sinister allies.
