Entertainment Weekly reports:

"According to studio insiders, Sony was working on both Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 and the new origin story from James Vanderbilt, who wrote Zodiac. The original plan was to keep the Spider-Man gang together for one last film in 2011 before rebooting the series in 2012. When it became clear that Raimi would not be able to make the summer 2011 release date planned for Spider-Man 4, the studio opted to scrap Spider-Man 4 altogether, and focus solely on the series reboot.

Who will helm the new film is anyone’s guess but with the studio interested in a more gritty, contemporary redo of the series, they are certainly focused on younger directors making waves in Hollywood. One name that has popped up is Marc Webb, the man behind (500) Day of Summer. He was previously in discussions with the studio to take over Moneyball, but that job went to Bennett Miller. Michael Bay has also previously expressed interest in taking over the Spider-Man franchise and Seabiscuit director Gary Ross worked on one of the drafts of Spider-Man 4 and is said to be a huge fan of the comic book series."

Spiderman isn't meant to be dark. He's like the comic relief of the Marvel universe. If they try to make him dark, it just won't seem right. It will be like trying to make an orange be an apple, or it will just be like Spiderman trying to be the Dark knight. the reboot shouldn't be total campy, it should simply be an action comedy

this reboot is sh!t

Hey lets reboot Transformers and Ironman too, lets not wait for GL or Thor to hit the big screen. Lets rebot them.

If sony knew a reboot was coming why didn't they just do it right the first time?

Honestly I could stand a little bit of grit in Spidey, but he himself should not be, just very very sarcastic and witty.

Peter gets MJ preggers. Instead of fighting crime, he has to work a full-time shift at Pizza Hut to pay child support. Eddie Brock is his shift manager. The final battle is over working a double shift when Peter has tickets to the Mets.

After the major [frick] up that was spidey 3 I had no interest in seeing any of the Raimi/McGuire crew coming back for a 4th.

I think a reboot is great but I don't want a 90210 spider-man, I want the 90's cartoon bad ass spider-man that I fell in love with

Yes 1 and 2 were awesome don't get me wrong but I think this is awesome and I am once again excited for spider-man to hit the big screen!

this is a good thing, they get a 2nd chance at Venom, and they get to get rid of Kirsten Dunst; but we'll all miss Sam Raimi

there's a difference between making the CHARACTER dark/gritty, and making the STORY dark/gritty. spidey has always been a more light-hearted, joking character. but a lot of his stories have been extremely dark and gritty.

Kraven's Last Hunt: Kraven beats spidey nearly to death, then buries him alive. Kraven later blows his own brains out with a shotgun.

Torment: Calypso, Kraven's old lover, seeks revenge on Spiderman for Kraven's death. she uses voodoo to take control of the Lizard. its a very bloody and dark story. spidey basically gets his ass handed to him up and down new york city for 6 issues straight, then doesn't even end up saving the day at the end.

Carnage: lets face it, anything with this maniac is dark and gritty. he's a psycho killer.

thats not even counting the couple of Chameleon stories that spidey gets put through the wringer in. or some of the less popular (yet still dark) stories like The Other, or Reign.

i don't see a problem with the movie being dark, most of spidey's best stories are dark, as long as they get the character right its all good.

Whoever directs it I just hope it ain't
Michael "Special Effects A.D.D." Bay.
The new series shouldn't try to be 'darker'
or else we'll end up w/
Parker dancing in the streets again
w/ an Emo look. Just set them in today's world
realistically & not campy like the 1st 1.
& can we get an actor who isn't 1 dimensional?
Tobey Maguire was ok as Peter Parker
but wasn't the 'smart alleck' Spider-Man
we know & love from the comics.
& last but certainly not least...
A hot Mary Jane who isn't a pain in the butt.

They seem to be making a lot of unnecessary reboots. I mean, even GOOD movies are being rebooted. Nothing was wrong with the first 2 Spider-man films. I still enjoyed the 3rd one too, even though a lot needed to be improved on it. But to actually reboot the whole thing because of one set back??? Why?? And a GRITTIER Spider-man? I'm sorry, but I've just never seen Spider-man as a gritty character. If anything, he's more light-hearted and is the light that balances the darkness of other characters who ARE in fact gritty.

McLovin for Spider-Man!
But I could go for a darker spiderman but not dark knight dark but not everything going spideys way.

Also this reboot paves the way for the Venom spin off, we no longer have to worry about explaining why venom isn't topher grace because he's not apart of this new continuity.

@TimJude72- I remember Spidey from the 90's cartoon to be FAR from a badass; he pissed and cried about his love life ALMOST as much as Peter Parker emoed out and sucked in Spider-Man 4. Let's not have a repeat of that, shall we?
If the filmmakers want to use any animated series as a template, they need to look at the recent The Spectacular Spider-Man series. THAT is the closest that ANY adaptation of the webhead has come to being true to the source material. I know a lot of people haven't enjoyed the series, but it's been the best that we fans have been given to date.
@CorndogBurglar- Dude, total props to you for knowing your $hit; you have the character right on. A darker storyline without a darker main character could work extremely well. Maybe they should be consulting with Todd MacFarlane about a potential story for the next Spidey movie. Torment WAS pretty awesome. Actually, MacFarlanes' entire 14-16 issue run on Spider-Man was frickin' great. Whether it was Ghost Rider and Spidey against Hobgoblin, or Wolverine teaming up with Webs, or Spidey donning the black costume again to hunt down Morbius, that whole tenure rocked. Maybe they should look there for inspiration......
Here's my two cents for director: not Michael Bay. I'm jaded after Transformers 2. Maybe Stan Lee for director? Anything is possible...
Hope this one is better than the last one.
Peace. I'm outta' here.

Hello, I'm still new here. I am a big fan of Raimi's horror and I think that there is no better director to make a darker Spider-Man then him. Sony is only concerned with prophets, I fell that even though they might say they want gretty (The Dark Knight) really they only want more money and they say F*CK the fans.

dude, i for one am stoked about the reboot. i think it would be cool to take the darker approach, not too dark but i want to see goblin done in the classic creepy halloween costume and of course gwen stacey's demise at his hands! and i want Jake Gyllenhaal for Peter Parker! and some hot chick for mary jane, kirsten dunst was FUGLY in those movies ha ha i'm all for this!

Ok, the reboot is going to happen whether we think that's a good thing or not. Even those against the reboot will be turned if Sony take a leaf out of TDK's book. I am NOT saying make Spiderman dark, that would destroy the franchise before it gets going. TDK was made not to please the masses, not to sell tickets but leave people unsatisfied, not to be another notch on the CBM bed post but to stand alone as a quality movie, a piece of art that just happened to be about a superhero. The thing is, I fear Sony will try to make Spiderman to do nothing more than sell. They will see Twilight and make "Spiderman 90210". In other words, they will FOX it up!

LEEE777 - 1/13/2010, 3:07 AM
I'm sorry but SONY just needs to make a better sequel!!!

Lose MJ = perfect!!

The reboot needs to be at MARVEL STUDIOS when they get it back, coz when it happens, it will be rebooted a THIRD [frick]ing time and i say a hell no to that!!

And so will the General Public too! ; )
DarkOrion
DarkOrion - 1/13/2010, 3:19 AM
HAHAHA!!! Wow it seems that my first post started a real debate. First HELL NO JAKE GYLLENHAAL is to old for spidey, maybe when the first movie came out he could have been better then Maguire but I guess we'll never know. If Sony wants to start over with high school then the actor better not be over 20. It wasn't Raimi who screwed spidey 3 but the story Sony forced upon him. Raimi is a time tested story teller who was stunted by Sony's greed.

THE FORMULA WAS FINE THE WAY IT WAS. DON'T MAKE SPIDERMAN DARK..THATS LIKE MAKING SUPERMAN DARK..IT WON'T WORK. RAIMI MESSED UP ONE TIME SHOULD JUST LET HIM DO WHAT HE WANTS INSTEAD OF IMPOSING IDEAS ON HIM THAT WILL EFFECT HIS CREATIVITY.

rook187 - 1/13/2010, 5:47 AM
The movies need to be lighter, not darker. There was not enough banter during fight scenes. Spidey needs to keep it light. We don't need an origin story. Just a quick recap during the opening credits like at the beginning of Spider-Man 2 and then jump into it. High school is a great idea. Jumping past it in the first movie was a mistake IMHO.

If they use the same "Grit" as in Harry Potter, it could work. WB proved that you can still have a light hearted adventure in a gritty atmosphere. The thing is though... how the hell can you make high school gritty??? A magical academy is easy to pull off but a suburb high school in the state of New York is a tad harder to grit.
