SPIDER-MAN 3: Tom Holland Reveals Why Shooting The Threequel Has Been Such A Special Experience

Talking to his fellow MCU actor Chris Pratt, Tom Holland reveals why working on Spider-Man 3 has been such a special experience for him. Find more details on that, and an update on the shoot, right here...

Spider-Man 3 is currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and if recent rumours are to be believed, it could end up being the biggest Marvel Studios movie to date. The prospect of Tom Holland sharing the screen with fellow Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield is undeniably exciting, as is potentially seeing them battle the likes of Doctor Octopus and Electro (those two villains have actually been confirmed for the threequel, with Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina reprising their past roles).

Recently, Holland sat down for a chat with Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, and revealed why shooting Spider-Man 3 has been a particularly special experience.

"We started shooting Spider-Man 3 a few months ago, which had been crazy and really weird because we’re shooting it back in Atlanta," the British actor explained. "That’s where I did my audition for Spider-Man, and we’re actually shooting [Spider-Man 3] in the stage where I did my audition, and it’s like a really weird full-circle story of walking through the same door I walked through as an 18-year-old kid, like, nervous, like, ‘Oh my god, I hope I get this job!’"

"And then walking through the door at 24, making the third movie loving life, confident, enjoying everything that’s happening for me. So, it’s been amazing, dude, it’s been awesome."

It's not exactly shocking that Holland didn't give anything away about what we can expect from Spider-Man 3, but it's clearly a special movie for the actor. A first look at this third instalment was teased last year, but never came our way in December as promised. Now, we just have to hope it arrives sooner rather than later, especially if it confirms those Spider-Verse rumours!

Check out the full conversation between Holland and Pratt below:

the confirmed and rumoured cast of Spider-Man 3!

Confirmed: Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield)

Garfield

Andrew Garfield only played Peter Parker twice, but his passion for the character were enough to make you think he'd been suited up as the web-slinger for longer than Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland combined.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw the actor go out with more of a whimper than a bang, while there's every chance he could have played Spidey in the MCU had he not upset Sony execs in Japan (it was reported that he missed a dinner due to illness, but caused great offence in the process).

Garfield has unfinished business with Spider-Man, and this threequel can help with that.

There's a story still to be told with this Peter, and it's not exactly hard to imagine him having spiralled after the death of Gwen Stacy.

Confirmed: Electro (Jamie Foxx)

Electro2

Joining Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was Jamie Foxx as Electro. Despite being an Oscar-winner, the actor's performance is widely considered one of the worst ever seen in a Marvel film.

He's getting a second chance with Spider-Man 3, however, but won't be blue this time if his deleted Instagram post is anything to go by. In fact, it was that which set off all the Spider-Verse speculation after Foxx shared fan-art of three versions of Spider-Man facing down Electro.

You have to believe he now wants to redeem himself for that 2014 disappointment.

In leaked emails from the Sony Hack, it was made clear that Kevin Feige loved Electro, so he likely has something special planned for the Soul star in this threequel.

Confirmed: Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)

MJ

As we recently explained, there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding whether Kirsten Dunst would return as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4

The actress hasn't been too flattering when talking about the seemingly endless series of Spider-Man reboots ("Who cares?" she asked back in 2017), but has looked back at her time as MJ fondly.

That likely explains why she's happy to reprise the role.

At the end of the original Spider-Man 3, it was apparent that MJ was having doubts about her relationship with Peter, so exploring what became of their romance could make for compelling viewing. Given Raimi's involvement with the Doctor Strange sequel, Kevin Feige no doubt has his blessing to explore that, possibly teaching the MCU's Peter a big lesson along the way.

Confirmed: Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)

Strange2

The original plan was for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be released before the next Spider-Man film, but that's either getting delayed now or Kevin Feige has rejigged the timeline.

No matter how that ends up playing out, Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme will be joining Peter Parker during his trip into the Spider-Verse, and that makes sense on a number of levels.

Feige is known to be a fan of J. Michael Straczynski's Amazing Spider-Man run, and it was there Spidey's friendship with Strange was established. Why he would take Peter on this trip is hard to figure out, but it could have something to do with hiding his secret identity.

Here's hoping he's more than just a mentor, anyway.

Confirmed: Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina)

Ock1

A very different type of Doctor, Otto Octavius is finally returning to the silver screen, with Spider-Man 2 star Alfred Molina once again playing the multi-armed baddie.

Like Electro, we don't know whether this is the same version of the villain from that 2004 classic or just the same actor delivering a new take on a familiar character. It all starts to get a bit confusing when you stop and think about it, but find a photo of Molina in 2020, and he still looks the part!

Doctor Octopus died in Spider-Man 2, so if this is the same Otto, that will need some explaining.

Ock is one of Spidey's most iconic foes, so we can only hope that Molina plans to stick around to torment the web-slinger in future as they could have some epic battles. There's also no one better to lead the Sinister Six.

Confirmed: Spider-Man (Tom Holland)

Tom

Has anyone made a "Tom Holland to cameo as Spider-Man in Spider-Man 3" joke yet?

Peter Parker went through a lot in Spider-Man: Far From Home, though the biggest blow Mysterio could have dealt came right at the very end of the film when he framed Peter Parker for murder and outed his identity to the world. That's not going to be easy for this Avenger to bounce back from.

Turning to Doctor Strange to put the proverbial genie back in the bottle is a logical next move for Peter, but it looks like he'll soon find more than he bargained for.

Last year, Kevin Feige said, "Spider-Man is the only hero with the superpower to cross between Sony and Marvel’s cinematic universes." Expect that to be explained here.

Confirmed: The Supporting Cast

(Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Angourie Rice, And Marisa Tomei)

Ned

We're not sure how much time will be devoted to the franchise's supporting cast, but Zendaya's MJ is almost certainly going to play a pivotal role in how this story unfolds.

Jacob Batalon has slimmed down, and could get to see a lot more action thanks to that.

It's possible Angourie Rice's Betty could be working for TheDailyBugle.net's J. Jonah Jameson now, while we have no doubt that Tony Revolori's Flash Thompson is going to have something to say about his enemy, Peter Parker, being revealed to the world as Spider-Man.

As for May Parker (Marisa Tomei), we're eagerly anticipating seeing what she makes of all this.

Rumored: Green Goblin/s (Willem Dafoe & Dane DeHaan)

Gobby

Both versions of the Green Goblin (we're not going to count James Franco's weird take on the villain) have been rumored to return in Spider-Man 3, and it's Willem Dafoe's we're hoping to see back on the big screen.

Unfortunately, it looks a lot like Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborn will be back to terrorize the web-slinger, and giving his ambitions to form the Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he could end up playing a key role in the formation of some sort of multidimensional spin on the team.

In the hands of Marvel Studios, he could quite easily receive an overhaul when it comes to his goofy appearance.

Something more along the lines of how the Goblin looked in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics makes most sense, but we're not sure we want to see this villain wasted as little more than a cameo.

Rumored: Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone)

Gwen11

Emma Stone is said to be close to signing on for a return as Gwen Stacy, but our gut is telling us that she won't be playing the Gwen who died in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Instead, Marvel Studios could have some fun with this talented actress by having her suit up as an experienced version of Spider-Gwen. Audiences are familiar with the character after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but not even the comics have explored what an older Spider-Woman with Gwen under the mask might look like.

It's hard to think of anyone better to don that costume, anyway!

We can safely say that, if this pans out, seeing Stone in the MCU will be appreciated by everyone as she's a huge talent and long overdue for another superhero role.

Rumored: Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire)

Maguire

You can't have a live-action Spider-Verse film without Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.

The actor has focused more on producing than acting in recent years, but this return would be every bit as spectacular and amazing as fans would hope. It will have close to fifteen years since he last played Spidey when Spider-Man 3 is released, and this weathered, experienced Peter could make for an interesting mentor to the MCU's Pete.

Our hope is that this will lead to Maguire's Spider-Man returning in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness because Sam Raimi getting his hands on the wall-crawler again is a must.

We want this to happen so badly, and we're sure you all do as well!

Rumored: Venom (Tom Hardy)

Venom1232

Tom Holland wants this to happen, Tom Hardy wants this to happen, and so does Sony brass if they have any sense!

A Spider-Man/Venom crossover would be a guaranteed hit at the box office, and logical next step for the Venom franchise after Let There Be Carnage is released next year. Putting Peter Parker in the black suit would give Disney, the owners of Spider-Man's merchandising rights, a lot of new options to play with as well.

If Hardy was going to cameo in Spider-Man 3, you'd think we'd have heard something a little more concrete by now.

Instead, it's little more than a hard-to-believe rumor, and unless he's the secret sixth member of a multidimensional Sinister Six (with Mysterio, The Vulture, Electro, Doctor Octopus, and Scorpion), we're not sure about this one!

Rumored: Daredevil (Charlie Cox)

WWwe22

As we were in the midst writing this, the news broke that Daredevil star Charlie Cox is locked in to reprise his role as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man 3

It doesn't come from the trades, so we're labelling it as a rumor for now.

We'll need some time to process this, but it looks like Peter will have a great lawyer representing him in court when he's forced to defend himself against those allegations he killed Mysterio. Don't be surprised if that villain is still alive, and possibly responsible for stealing something from the Sanctum Santorum (and setting off the chain of events leading to the Spider-Verse).

As for Daredevil, we can only hope we get to see Cox suited up in a comic accurate costume, but bringing Cox back to play the Man Without Fear was the right decision.

Rumored: Sandman

382732831

Spider-Man 3 was released in 2007, and the technology used to bring Sandman to life was groundbreaking.

In 2020, it would likely be even better, and it's impossible not to get excited by what that could look like. However, we're not sure that the prospect of Thomas Haden Church returning as this baddie is quite as thrilling.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the actor's take on Flint Marko, but the reveal that he was Ben Parker's killer still makes us cringe. Sandman would undoubtedly be a fitting addition to the Sinister Six, but we're just not sure we need the reminder of that stupid plot twist.

Despite that, it sounds like he might just show up!

Rumored: Mysterio

3827328312

Honestly, we're surprised it took this long for Mysterio's return to be rumored.

The villain may have "died" at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, but he is a master of illusion, and Quentin Beck making the decision to out the web-slinger and frame Peter Parker had to be more than spur of the moment thinking.

In the Ultimate line of comics, Mysterio travels between worlds, so we won't be shocked if he really does have a history with the Multiverse, especially as he knew so much about it when we last saw him! In fact, it's likely Beck who is behind this plan to bring this Sinister Six together.

Perhaps he's already wreaked havoc on the lives of the other Spider-Men on their worlds?

Rumored: Hobgoblin

38273283121

One of the hardest to believe rumors is that we'll see Hobgoblin in Spider-Man 3 as well.

Bringing back some villains from the past is one thing, but adding a new one to the mix? That could be a step too far. In the comics, it's Roderick Kingsley who's beneath the mask, but Peter Parker's friend, Ned Leeds, was once framed by him.

With actor Jacob Batalon dropping a ton of weight for this threequel, perhaps he'll be the Hobgoblin of another world? That would open Spidey's eyes to the Multiverse, for sure. However, we can't help but think this would be a waste of a villain with the potential to carry an entire film.

We'll see on this one, but color us intrigued!

@Nightwing1015 - This is just confirmation bias. There were PLENTY of people not in support of this. Also, this meme is a bad argument and doesn't consider Spider-Man actually being a Marvel IP.

@Tonic24k - Oh 100% yeah people were initially completely against Sony. It was only the week after when we got more details leaked that people started realising it was Marvel's fault.

And yeah I agree that particular meme isn't a great argument but the general principle is definitely true - Disney was getting greedy

@Nightwing1015 - Greedy to work with their own IP?... That's some ironic shit. Lol
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/4/2021, 4:58 AM
@Tonic24k - Well I guess technically it is their own IP but they didn't own the film rights and started becoming unreasonably demanding. What they didn't realise is that Sony could easily walk away. They had some pretty big Spidey successes with Venom and Spiderverse so that certainly gave them the power in that situation.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 1/4/2021, 9:02 AM
@Nightwing1015 - The film rights here is a glorified licensing situation. And it happened when Marvel wasn't even thinking of doing their own films. Now that the MCU exists, Spider-Man deserves to be in it and Sony is holding the property hostage.

Personally, I think Marvel should negotiate that Sony does all animated projects while Marvel Studios get all their characters under one roof for MCU storytelling. Sony pioneered that animation style for ITSV; that's their lane. And shit, even if they took over the What If project for future installments that could work out for both parties. Or hell, give them a bunch of the Fox properties they acquired. But Venom wasn't received as well as it would've been if Marvel Studios produced it. It had decent box office success but tying it in with proper storytelling based on source material would've made it a much better film. Or better yet, part of the MCU's Spider-Man story arc.

With this said, I don't think any of Marvel Studios' demands could be considered unreasonable. They made higher grossing SM films than Sony ever did and finally took the character over $1B. Not to mention...it's their property to begin with. The only film Sony made that could be argued to be better is SM2. SM1 was pretty good, SM3 was awful, and the reboot and its sequel were a collective abomination.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/4/2021, 9:49 AM
@Tonic24k - "it's their property to begin with"

That honestly makes no difference in the business world though. Marvel were on the verge of bankrupcy and selling the film rights back in the 90s is what made the MCU possible. So Marvel don't get to complain about Sony "holding it hostage". It was a consensual transaction that allowed them to invest in the most profitable film franchise of all time, I don't exactly think it's unfair to Marvel.

And when you adjust for inflation, Sony's original Spider-Man films outperformed Marvel's. 1 billion today is not as impressive a gross as 900 million was in 2007.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 1/4/2021, 11:11 AM
@Nightwing1015 - I'm in the business world. I know how it works. Deals aren't meant to last forever. They're typically conditional to account for variable factors. And Marvel isn't complaining, they're pursuing. Which they have every right to do. No one ever imagined a Marvel Studios ever being formed back then, let alone soaring to become the most successful film franchise in history. By a staggering margin, too. What ISN'T "business" is to let another company tell you you're never getting your IP back.

Marvel Studios has proved they have the ability to make quality CBMs consistently. Nothing they've produced has flopped and even their worst films are reviewed relatively well. Some folks will say Captain Marvel was an awful film yet it made over $1B. They've got the juice! Sony had their chance and lost their footing after 2 films. That's the reality. So really, Sony doesn't have a good reason to maintain their stubbornness. They're not making good Spidey films.

However, they found success with ITSV. So once again, that's their lane. They need to focus on their strengths instead of trying to be what the MCU is.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/4/2021, 12:45 PM
@Tonic24k - "What ISN'T "business" is to let another company tell you you're never getting your IP back."

Why? Sony are completely within their legal rights to do that. Marvel consensually sold their film rights to them. When you sell something you accept you are transfering property rights. Why would they expect to ever get them back?

"So really, Sony doesn't have a good reason to maintain their stubbornness. They're not making good Spidey films."

And yet they had two extreme successes in the form of Venom and Spider-Verse in the last few years alone. I agree with you that Marvel produce better films but that doesn't appear to matter at the box office! Those successes solidify Sony's position and prove that they don't really NEED Marvel which means Marvel couldn't afford to become too demanding.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/4/2021, 12:46 PM
But yeah, agreed, they need to stop trying to be the MCU.
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 1/4/2021, 1:29 PM
@Nightwing1015 - I wouldn't call Venom an extreme success. It's nowhere near the caliber of a Marvel Studios film and its reviews are super meh. Marvel can absolutely be as demanding as they want to be. They're in a position of much more power despite Sony shielding themselves with a contractual agreement.

Yes, Sony has the legal right to play stubborn. But again, contracts are not meant to be forever. As times change, as interests change, agreements are renegotiated to continue to make sense for both parties. They also did not SELL the film rights to Sony. They negotiated a licensing agreement. This is an important distinguishing factor. Based on the original agreement, Sony had to make a Spider-Man film every 6 years in order to honor the deal. Otherwise, film rights reverted back to Marvel. If Sony OWNED the film rights, they would have no such stipulation. The rights are borrowed on conditional terms.

So to answer your question of why they'd ever expect to get the rights back: Because licensing is conditional and temporary. It made sense at the time they granted the licensing. However, now that Marvel has their own film production company and doesn't depend on other film studios to make their movies, they're pursing the film rights. And THIS is precisely what business is.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 1/4/2021, 2:20 PM
@Tonic24k - Oh year Venom sucks. I was talking only about financial success.

"Marvel can absolutely be as demanding as they want to be"

Well apparently not seeing as they caved when they realised Sony was willing to walk. Their demandingness got them nowhere. I believe this was mainly because of Sony's recent film successes. If it hadn't been for them, yes I agree Marvel could have had more of their demands met.

Yeah fair enough on the film licensing. It's not as damning as having sold the rights. But I guess my point is that Sony is under no obligation to give up that agreement. As long as they stick to the licensing deal, they could keep making those films forever. Sony should only change that agreement if it is in their interests to do so. And in the end, they knew it wouldn't be in their interests to accept the initial deal and decided to wait for a better one to come along (which it did only weeks later)
Tonic24k
Tonic24k - 1/4/2021, 7:55 PM
@Nightwing1015 - Didn't they just stalemate? I recall Disney letting Sony walk away. Then it seemed they came back to the table a couple months later and renegotiated something else in "the interest of the fans". I mean...we'll never know what was really said in those meetings. But I do think Sony isn't completely confident in themselves without some association with Marvel Studios. It's why they're negotiating in the first place. Otherwise, they wouldn't be entertaining any new deals. Which concerns the hell out of me because I absolutely don't want Sony's spider-verse--or venom-verse--becoming canon with the MCU.

At the end of they day, I just want all Marvel characters under one roof. Disney acquired a ton of properties they could use as bargaining chips. But of course the problem is: what's as appealing as Spider-Man? I'm not sure Sony would take 20 properties in exchange for this one.

At any rate, here's to hoping what lies ahead isn't a cluster fvck.

I don't think a lot of people realise he was acting before and during playing Peter. With some pretty big names as well.

He was in the Impossible as Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts' son
Voice Tom Hardy's son in Locke
He was great in In the Heart of the Sea
Great small role in The Lost City of Z
I really liked how he acted off Benedict Cumberbatch in The Current War
And he was great in The Devil All the Time.

Dude's a good actor, looking forward to Cherry. And Spider-Man ofcourse.
