At this point, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire returning as the previous big-screen incantations of Peter Parker/Spider-Man seems like the worst kept secret in Hollywood, but even after countless leaks - at least some of which do appear to be legit - we still haven't had official confirmation that the three Webheads will swing into action together in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Star Tom Holland is known for dropping the occasional spoiler in interviews, and may have finally let the cat out of the bag while chatting with Total Film for their latest issue.
"Everyone puts their trousers on in the same way in the morning," he said after being asked if he felt the need to prove himself while working with so many actors from previous Spider-Man films. "It was interesting having those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way, and..."
After a pause, he continues: "I’m talking about Alfred and Jamie and those guys. To see Alfred come in, and have to adapt and change to the way that the films are made, but also change director, and also [the fact that] I’m now Spider-Man. It was really interesting to see these actors adapt and change what they were doing to fit the modern era."
This sounds like a slip of the tongue, but when asked for clarification, Holland stuck to his guns that Maguire and Garfield will not be appearing in No Way Home.
"People don’t believe me when I say that they are not coming back. But people are going to have to believe me at some point. It means a lot to me. The first time you see Doc and the rest of the characters that come back, it’s so exciting – and it’s such a huge moment in cinematic history. It’s three generations coming together."
We believe you, Tom!
Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to hit theaters next month, so we should see that second trailer fairly soon. Whether Maguire and Garfield show up remains to be seen, but even if they are in the movie, there's a chance Sony/Marvel will keep them out of the marketing, so best not to get your hopes up.
