Kallark Kent Reports: Ranking the Spider-Man films!

Sony has produced 5 Spider-Man films in the last 12 years, check out how I, Kallark Kent, rank them from worse to best.

Editorial Opinion
By KallarkKent - May 02, 2014 12:05 AM EST

Hello true believers! I am Kallark Kent, and in the following editorial I thought it’d be fun to look back at all 5 Spider-Man films produced by Sony in the last 12 years and rank them from worse to best.

5. Spider Man 3

This movie is an example of what happens to a great franchise when the studio that produces the films gets greedy.  After 2 very successful outings, the makers of the Spider-Man franchise  decided to up the ante by having Spider Man face 3 villains. Needless to say, the movie felt overcrowded, fan favorite villain Venom was rushed, emo Peter … enough said and unnecessary and dance numbers have made Spider Man 3 not only the worse Spider Man movie ever but also one of the worse CBM ever produced.

4.  The Amazing Spiderman 2

This is an enjoyable movie( if you have low expectations, it really is,) but not a great Spider-Man film.  Tonally it’s all over the place, and just like Spider-Man 3 it suffers from being overcrowded and perhaps from trying to do too much too soon.  This movie is a response to a post-Avengers world, where fans a like us are spoiled and demand not just great films but interconnectivity between franchises, team ups and cinematic Universes. Unfortunately this movie only delivers on the cool factor and on the promise of a bigger universe.

3. The Amazing Spiderman

After the debacle that was Spider-Man 3, Sony cut ties wiht Sam Raimi and decided to reboot Spidey. So they hired wunderkind director Mark Webb (because his last name is Webb, nothing else in his resume says “This guy knows spider-Man) to direct a more grounded, less campy, Ramones loving, skater boy take on Spider-Man. The movie received mostly positive reviews, but it is still somewhat over showed by the original Raimi films not only on approval but also in financial success.

2. Spider-Man

This is the movie that started it all, many people credit movies like Blade and X-men for the advent of the Comic Book Movie, but it was Spider-Man that caved the way for men in tights to become major global successes.  This is the first movie to ever pass $100 million on a single weekend, and it held the title of highest grossing CBM until Spider Man 3 out gross it in 2007.  What made this movie have such a cultural impact? Who knows, every now and then the stars align and something that wasn’t expected to be great becomes the thing that redefines a whole medium.

1. Spider-Man 2

In my humble opinion, this is the best Spider-Man movie produced yet. Spider-Man may hold the title of having most cultural impact but Spider-Man 2 was a much better film. This is the one that really explores the journey of the hero. In this movie our hero is down on his luck; nothing is going right for him, he feels the weight of his responsibility and he is paying a high price for trying to do what is right.  I am not saying by any means that this movie is perfect; Peter losing his powers due to “not wanting to be spider-Man anymore” was dumb to say the least but this movie has just the right amount of weight, camp and charm to put it on top of my Spider-Man list.

So that’s my humble opinion, I’d be interested to know if you guys agree with my ranking, disagree or perhaps would like to share how you rank Sony’s Spider- Man films. Thank you for reading and stay honest CBM friends.

Spider-man 3 it's no way a good movie, but one of the worst? In order to be the worst it must be so bad that it shouldn't exist. I think everyone had something that they liked about the movie.
I haven't see TASM 2, but from what I hear it's like that.
My score
Spider-Man 3 - 6/10
The Amazing Spider-Man - 7.5/10
Spider-Man - 8.5/10
Spider-Man 2 - 8.5/10

@MrSuperheromoviefan- The reason why I think SM3 is one of the worse, and again, this is just my opinion, and you are welcome to disagree with me, is because it killed Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series. If that doesn't qualify it as one of the worse I don't know what does.

The Amazing-Spider-Man 2 is the worst, it was like watching a comic boo kmovie from the mid-ninety's. It was so bad. Nothing more than Batman Forever/Batman & Robin flick doctored with the Spider-Man brand label. Utter rubbish.

Ranking all the films.

Spider-Man 2 8/10
Spider-Man 7/10
Spider-Man 3 6/10
The Amazing Spider-Man 5/10
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 4/10

The Amazing Spider-Man isn't given much reason in your opinion of why it's the middle film. That being said, the following is my opinion.

1: The Amazing Spider-Man
2: Spider-Man 2
3: Spider-Man
4: Spider-Man 3

Seeing Spidey 2 this weekend and Spider-Man 3 ha enough redeeming qualities to make it not a bad superhero movie but more of a disappointing one. I love the original trilogy, they have great themes but: There is no chemistry between Tobey and Kirsten, Doc Ock is an over rated villain that would not have had praise if it wasn't for Alfred Molina's fantastic performance and the movies in general lacked in emotional weight and character development for the most part. The Amazing Spider-Man while it didn't have the most exciting villain that wasn't used to his full potential but was still a good villain, had across the board phenomenal performances, character development and emotional weight. This Spider-Man is not only more relatable which I felt somewhat lacked in the original trilogy but also this Spider-Man is much more dramatic and has a little bit more tension and as I said before, emotional weight. Spidey 2 unfortunately sounds like a mixed bag. Oh well. He's still the best superhero and has yet to receive its Batman & Robin film.

@GliderMan-We can't all agree on everything, I'd be interested on seeing how you rate them.

@EdgyOutsider- The Amazing Spider-Man is in the middle because for me it did not have the same emotional impact that Raimi's Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, it wasn't a bad movie but it lacked a little of bit of the charm that made Raimi's great, but that's just my opinion.

@DrunkenPirateNukem-Nice!

I didn't like any of the Amazing Spiderman movies over Raimi's trilogy. Spiderman 3 was bad, but at least the story flowed a lot better than Webb's installment. And I don't know who Peter Parker is in these movies, is he a shy nerd with social issues (ASM)or this cocky jerk that thinks he run NY(ASM2).

1. Spider-Man 2
2. Spider-Man
3. Spider-Man 3
4. TASM

At this point, I am not planning to see TASM2, based on my dislike of the first TASM, and that the reviews I've read haven't suggested that I will enjoy this one much more. So anyway, I can't rank TASM2.

Spider-Man 3, though...I actually really like it. No, it's not near the overall quality level of the first two Raimi films, but for me, it's enjoyable and full of heart. And the dance sequence...I'm one of those people who find it so absurd that it's great. Personally, I think that there are many CBMs that are worse than it.

1) Spider-Man 11/10
2) Spider-Man 2 10/10
3) Spider-Man 3 8/10 I found it quite hilarious and I liked Sandman
4) TASM 2 6.5/10
5) TASM 6/10

Spider Man 2 (9/10)
The Amazing Spider Man (8/10)
Spider Man/The Amazing Spider Man 2 (7.5/10)
Spider Man 3 (3/10)

The TASM movies may not be the best, but to say that either is worse than Spider Man 3 is ridiculous

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
2. The Amazing Spider-Man
3. Spider-Man 2
4. Spider-Man
5. Spider-Man 3

Sorry, guys, but I just love the direction the new series is going with. I'm not saying it's not reasonable to dislike them, I just hate the fact that no one seems to see how deep and intricate the plot and themes are of the first two TASM movies. Oh, well. At least I can see it, and I guess that's all that matters.

@superherofan21 Youre not alone. These two have far and away had the better acting, and had the TASM had the level of art direction and storytelling that TASM2 it would have been better than Raimi's, and people wouldn't even be having this discussion, because everyone would have been on the bandwagon.

Problem was, TASM wasnt as good as SM2, so it made some fans, decide to hate all the subsequent films regardless of how good they are.
CaptainAmerica31
CaptainAmerica31 - 5/2/2014, 4:25 PM
As a avid TASM I have to say that TASM2 was a MASSSSSIVE let down. It's the lowest rated spider-man film, it won't too TWS opening and it looks like it actually might make less than TASM. Saying that it's the worst super hero movie is a massive stretch. It's just a bad movie. Not enough time developing electro who just came off as wasted. The real villain in the movie should've been Goblin. Take out Electro and make gobby the center villain, get rid of the parent shit. Make it darker or make it lighter don't go both ways. This movie suffered an identity crisis and it DRAGGED! The movie was in interesting whenever Peter wasn't talking to Harry. The movie really excelled when it got to the third act. Whenever spider man was fighting green goblin was the best. This movie was a let down and I hope the guys at Sony know it. People don't want to see spider man after watching his movies for 12 god damn years. Let it rest and gain up some momentum in comics and other mediums.

TASM series is superior in acting. That's it. TASM did a better job with character development. What do you expect from [frick]ing Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci? The mofos who [frick]ed up Star Trek ITD

Kurtzman and Orci wrote TASM2 they [frick]ed it up. So did Arad the mother [frick]er who [frick]ed up SM3

@superherofan21, @irishyardball

Where you guys see depth and intricacy, some (such as myself) see unrealized storytelling. I don't really care how the TASM franchise compared to Spider-Man 2, so much as whether the TASM franchise impresses me in its own right.

That does get a bit complicated, though, when one feels that a reboot is retreading.

Anyway, though, personally I respect a simple film that succeeds in fulfilling its mission statement (which is how I feel about the first two Raimi films) more than a would-be complex film that isn't quite there (which is how I feel about these Webb films).

But of course, this is all subjective.

GuardianDevil - 5/2/2014, 9:45 PM
Spider-Man 2 is second ONLY to The Dark Knight in my book. Best Marvel film even now...

Spider-Man 1 is great, TASM is mediocre and Spider-Man 3 is OKAY.

Overall, Raimi understood the character better and also just has a stronger charm and sense of style than Webb. He's also just a flat out better filmmaker. He's made great films outside the Spidey series and I had never even heard of Webb before TASM.
iMVuze
iMVuze - 5/2/2014, 10:24 PM
@GuardianDevil

Yeah Raimi totally understood Spider-Man better. With things like organic webbing, Mary Jane first and then Gwen second,a non quipping Spider-Man, and let's not forget Sandman as Uncle Ben's killer. Totally nailed it. Raimi has the Evil Dead series and it still took him 10 years after that to be fully recognized. You haven't heard of Webb before the reboot because he made ONE feature film before the Spider-Man series.
GuardianDevil
GuardianDevil - 5/3/2014, 8:54 AM
@iMVuze
Well, let me start by saying I respect where you stand on the subject and I have no intention of trying to discredit or change your views.

But....

Organic webbing? It's not from the comics, I'll give you that. Personally I actually prefer it this way over the web shooters but that's a totally different discussion. How he produces his webbing really has little effect on the character himself.

Dating Mary Jane first? Again, it's not outta the comics but it doesn't really matter who is first as long they are both portrayed well. THAT is another debate entirely.

No quips? THAT is a lie, Spidey quipped a few times in the old series. "Here's your change!" "Your the one whose out Gobby, outta your mind!" Cheesy? Yeah, but it sounds like it came straight from the panels. A HELLUVA lot better than "Whose been a bad widdle wizard!" Or whatever the frick he said.

Webb only produced one film before TASM? And? That proves my point exactly, Raimi has been a talented filmmaker for years. He isn't all that popular in the mainstream, but the guy is a LEGEND in the horror and superheroe genres. Webb seems like he's stil just starting out.

Even though I wish Raimi woulda stuck around, I'm not being clingy to the old trilogy. I liked TASM for what it was, and am really looking forward to seeing TASM2.
GuardianDevil
GuardianDevil - 5/3/2014, 9:02 AM
Raimi really just seemed to understand what makes Spidey great. Going through difficult situations and learning to bounce back and be a better person because of it. He loved his classic villains, and did his best with them.

Raimi also had a certain style about his Spider-Man films, they just feel like they were pulled straight from comics outta the 60's. I'm not talking about source material, I'm taking about tone. The only other film that feels the same is HULK (2003). The Webb Spidey-verse, the FoX-Men, the MCU, the DC films, none of them feel like comics directly transferred to screen the way Raimi's Spider-Verse did.

@Pending

I have a shallow understanding based off of what exactly?

@GuardianDevil

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to bash you and sorry I came off sarcastically but some people don't see faults in the Raimi trilogy. Like at all. I LOVE Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 and I don't talk about 3. But I feel like some people overlooked some things because it was their first time seeing Spider-Man on the big screen. If those quips pass for you then that's your opinion. In my opinion, the level of quips I would like to see is something along the lines of the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. As for Raimi sticking around I am kinda glad he didn't lol Vultress? I think I'll pass.

New ranking. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is fourth for me. One above Spider-Man 3. It does have a slightly unfocused narrative and Max's overall motives and his birthday candles line in Times Square was horrendous. Other than that, Harry should've been he only villain of the movie. Josh Wilding is WRONG about TASM2
