Why I Believe Gwen Needs To Die In TASM2 And Not The Third Installment

Check out my idea of how I think they should go about one of the most controversial stories in comics. The demise of Gwen Stacey

Editorial Opinion

I am pretty new to this site but thought I would give a shot at an editorial. Now this is my opinion not fact and my first article so I apologize if it is not up to standard.

Now when it comes to the reboot of our beloved webhead I must say I left the theater rather happy despite the plot holes, etc. As I'm sure some of you felt as well. However at the end of the movie when Captain Stacey makes Peter promise to "leave Gwen out of it" My mind immediately started racing back to the landmark issue The Amazing Spider-man #121 "The Night Gwen Stacey Died." I started getting all school girl giddy with happiness. The reason being that they completely shafted Gwen Stacey in the Raimi trilogy and that has never sat well with me that she was reduced to a simple minded rebound girl for Peter. We have seen what I thought to be some great chemistry and character development between Peter and Gwen in the first installment which is well deserved because obviously they need to make the audience fall in love with Gwen so her death is that much more dramatic, and when Peter uttered the last line to her "But those are the best kind" I went full retard with excitement.

This brings me to the points of how killing her off in the second movie would be more beneficial to the story as a whole. I believe killing her off in the third movie could be to late for a number of reasons but to start off (and this is my biggest problem with it) if the franchise didn't go past a third installment everything would be to rushed in the final act. You would have Gwen dying then have to have Peter have time to grieve, come back from it, and get to the point where he starts dating Mary Jane. It would feel to forced and unrealistic (without a flash forward but I think that's the lazy way out). Secondly we need to have time to see Peter learn and grow from this experience and really evolve to the all true Peter Parker/Spider-man we all know and love. We need time to see how this effects his psyche and his everyday life of both sides of his mind. If they did it in the third act we would most likely just get a bunch of scenes of him crying to Aunt May then he would be over it. My final reason for this play out is that the Green Goblin is a massive part of the Spider-man mythos and just having him come in the final installment, kill her and then he gets killed or imprisoned all in one movie is incredibly cliche and again rushed, not to mention doesn't do a massive character like Goblin justice. If we had him kill her at the end of TASM2 than it leaves the massive cliff hanger for the third movie, which would bring in a way bigger audience just out of curiosity alone and the whole movie would be a huge, really epic showdown between Peter and menacing Goblin.

So in conclusion this is out I hope it will turn out. We get Rhino and Electro as the villains in TASM2 who are working for Norman or Oscorp in general. Norman is building up to the Green Goblin the whole movie. Rhino and Electro obliviously fail to take down Spidey, which enrages Norman and he then uses the formula to turn into my favorite deranged Goblin, and kills Gwen near the end but not roll credits just yet. We end after Gwens' funeral (which is recently being speculated as currently filming) and Peter vowing his revenge on Goblin. Boom end roll credits and possibly a mid credit scene of Goblin also swearing he's going to finally take down Spider-man in the 3rd chapter. Now that his mind is broken, so will be his bones.

Thanks guys for taking the time to read my editorial! Like I said it's my first one so I am aware it is potentially bad, and it is also my opinion so make sure you guys throw out your opinion in the comments I am interested in hearing all the different ideas.

Some grammar, and spelling, but that's it on that end. Not bad at all I'd say.

That said, don't you think cramming the introduction of Electro, Rhino, Norman(who doesn't really have much reason right now to want Spidey dead yet), him developing the serum which ultimately creates the Green Goblin, and him turning into GG is a bit much to fit into one movie? Then they also have to have Spidey develope the relationship with Gwen, him figuring out how to beat Rhino and Electro, and then a final battle. Then he has to fight GG and have Gwen die. The there's the intro of MJ and Harry to the flick.

Not to insult you or anyone, but it's kind of odd to see how we get excited to witness a person's DEATH. It's like the intention of building up Gwen Stacy in the series was to have a strong emotional payoff when they eventually kill her off. I know it's an essential part of the mythos, it's just a little funny when you put it into perspective.

The "Those are the best kinds" line, got me excited at first as I thought that Peter was being a slick and smooth bastard. However, when you think about it, it's almost as if they sacrificed the relevance of Captain Stacy's death to create new suspense for the Goblin.

All digression aside, it's a mostly well written article for a first! :)

Having Gwen die in the 2nd movie may, in fact, open up more room for grieving, acceptance, redemption, vengeance, and morals in the 3rd one. If done correctly, it may alleviate the feeling of all these characters or plots being shoe-horned in for the sake of epicness.

@Paragon79 Thanks man and yea i do still feel it's a little rushed but I mean that's just how it was set up from the first one but this is just the way I thought it would kind of even it out and give us the most epic finale.

@Soto that is an interesting point I think could pay off i just don't like the fact we may not get a Norman Green Goblin makes me somewhat bitter to be honest...

@SotoJuiceMan You really think they are going to kill off spider-man's most important villain in between movies? That would just be lazy. Norman is too important to just die all of a sudden, especially considering how much they mention him and allude to the fact he may have caused the death of peter's parents and his presence is felt in the first one. Considering we don't know how much time is going to take place in between TASM and TASM 2 we can't say on how much time he has left, I personally want Osborn pulling the strings much like he was in spectacular spider-man.

@Imthegoodguy: Haha i thought about that too it is a weird perspective but yes it is i believe very essential to the mythos. and thanks buddy for the compliment

@spideyguy for sure man that's waht i want to see Norman doing.

AlertTheSus: Personally, I think they should just have Electro as the villian, we've seen how having two can hurt the movie(spiderman 3), and have Norman using him to do his bidding. Also, not even introduce MJ(sadly thats confirmed) in this trilogy. Have the fact that Slidey stops Electro piss off Norman and want revenge, and then in a mid credit scene have him become GG. That way the love of Gwen and Peter(hehe..Peter) can last two movies, and then the big payoff in the third. The third one should have an intro scene or two with Gwen and Peter(hehe Peter) on a date, then action right out of the gates with GG fighting Spidey, and Gwen getting caught in the middle. That would set up for a pissed off vengeful Spidey for most of the third movie. Introducing MJ(who I don't thing was intro'd till after Gwens death) before Gwen's death is already rushing things.

If Harry became the Goblin first I'd be totally fine with that...

Nice article.

@Soto that seems plausible, but that could also work as a red herring - the story could unfold the way you described, only for Peter to discover Harry isn't the Goblin after all, and then they find out Norman isn't dead and that he was the Goblin the whole time.

thanks for the nice words boys maybe I will start posting more articles in the near future.

@paragon79: thats an awesome idea to bro I agree we shouldn't see MJ til after gwens death but I was just going with how they already have it somewhat mapped out. sweet idea too though I would be totally cool if they went that route

AlertTheSus - 2/14/2013, 4:36 PM
also I hope they go with the traditional goblin costume for this movie and not the ultimate version of goblin (even though I have a feeling they will) like how it is in the pic in my article that would be sooooo bad ass

@soto: fair point bro i just think they built up Norman to much in the first one to not have him be in the franchise beyond flashbacks I think it would be a dumb tease for them just to go the route of harry

Alert: Sadly they confirmed MJ already. I just hope it doesn't turn into some lame ass love triangle. The idea I posted was how I think it would have worked best, but I'm stillokng forward to this movie.

And, get to work the articles man ;-)! All you have to do is surf the web and find the breaking stories not already posted on here. I'd say focus more on DC(way more marvel articles get posted) and Image is basically ignored. Plus Dynamite comics is almost never reported on, other then the return of The Black Bat.

@Paragon79: thanks man and yea i have noticed mostly Marvel news on here. I would post some stuff about DC but I'm a Marvel guy and sadly don't know much about DC. We need some image stuff I was thinking actually of doing an article about how to do a new Spawn movie.........

@sotojuiceman: FOR SUUUUUURE MAN!!! when i first heard about TASM being in production that was the first thing that went through my head was I hope they do justice to Venom and was hoping for a really in depth story about the symbiote and eddie brock

Paragon79 - 2/14/2013, 4:56 PM
Alert: Not a bad idea, you also may want to try and find new info on the movie Mcfarlane said he was working on, haven't heard anything much about it. Not know to much about DC doesn't mean you can't post news on the comics and what not, plus you'd learn more about them. Plus there's dark horse and other companies that get no love here.

These guys are in a very sticky spot with the whole GG, Gwen dies thing. If they do use GG, it will be endlessly compared to Raimi's version. And if they try and kill her off another way, they will get hate by blind fan boys unable to accept any changes.

fair enough man thanks for the advice! >:)

If Norman became the GG it would be too cramped. If they tried to do that, it would be like Venom in SPIDER-MAN 3. A good character forced into the third act and only a ten minute fight scene. However, it would be cool if Harry became the Goblin in the beginning, and Electro kills Norman for giving him the powers (I'm assuming OsCorp has something to do with his powers) Then Harry could become angry at Peter for not saving Norman (Harry finds out his identity about half way through the movie) So for revenge, Harry kills Gwen. That would be better than Norman (who is more of a main villain) becoming a villain an hour and a half into the film. Plus, we've already seen the Goblin story arc. Harry becoming the Goblin and that version being like the Ultimate Goblin could be enough of a change that it wouldn't feel like a rehash of the Raimi trilogy.
TheSuperguy
TheSuperguy - 2/14/2013, 6:59 PM
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could be Venom. Peter is angry about his failure to save Gwen, and the symbiote feeds off of that. The symbiote could be an OsCorp experiment, escaped during either Electro's attack on Norman or the Green Goblin's rampage.

Tainted87 - 2/14/2013, 7:00 PM
Gonna be honest, I don't want to see Harry or Norman become the Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe is the Green Goblin, and anyone else just isn't going to work for me. Add to that the fact that the Goblin story is in ALL THREE of the Raimi movies. We're kind of tired of it.

I wouldn't be angry if Electro killed Gwen...

At this point we only know minor details about the film.

I can only hope it plays out something like this.

MJ and Harry are introduced as his college friends*Felicia goes to the same school* while still seeing Gwen on their down time from crime fighting school and work.

Rhino/electro/blackcat are becoming a bit of a handful for our friendly neighborhood spider-man. It gets tot he point where he is looking for answers in oscorp and he comes across the symbiote meteorite. With his new powers the 3 new trouble makers are easily dealt with rhino and electro locked up but while fighting blackcat he soon realizes what this new suit is doing to him *with great power...ect* feeling horrible for the abuse of this new power he disarms himself of the symbiote and is left to reflect on the mistakes he has made . but once again peter's timing is off a new menace emerges from the oscorp labs taking gwen hostage. I have a feeling the second film we will be left with a cliff hangar

PeterParker1991 - 2/15/2013, 12:27 PM
You have some good ideas, but logically it won't work that way. It just can't. At this point, Norman needs to be behind the scenes as an industrialist. Much like Tombstone in the Spectacular Spiderman cartoon. Throwing the Goblin atop Electro, Rhino and Black Cat will just turn it into another Spidey 3 and no one wants that. Good article though. Definitely creative but for these movies: stick to the comics

IIIAdamantiumIII - 2/16/2013, 12:10 AM
having more than one villain wont make a film a cluster [frick]... people just like to pick on sm3 because the end was so rushed with venom. but given the proper treatment you could have as many as you want look at the shows/comics they pull it off no problem. So many films that are not comic book movies have several villains and bad guys. people just like to make excuses. The more iconic spider-man characters the better.

SuperbatSpider1003 - 2/18/2013, 9:28 PM
these r all very valid points and i think the best way to do it is have the love triangle like in the comics since it would be more powerful so the audience will that mj backed off after gwen died so it wont feel rushed for her and pete to get together

@Soto

I'm sorry but there is no way they build up Normy this much only to kill him off like that.

The "Norman Osborne is dying" story is just to build up up hype, and set-up his origins as Gobby.
