Suicide Squad may not have impressed the majority of critics, but it still did very well at the box office so a sequel is inevitable... right? In a new interview, Jai Courtney shares his thoughts...

Before Suicide Squad was even released we were told a sequel was already on the agenda, but the negative critical reaction led many to speculate that Warner Bros. may rethink things. Of course, that was before the movie defied all expectations and took in over $700 million worldwide.

So, can we assume a follow-up is still in the cards?

During an interview with We Got This Covered, Captain Boomerang star Jai Courtney was asked if he'd heard anything about it, and although the Aussie actor admits that he hasn't yet, he also says he's far from done with the ruthless, but somewhat endearing villain.

“Listen, they keep their cards very close to their chest. I actually have no idea, I pray the answer is yes. I certainly don’t feel like I’m done with that character. I had a lot of fun playing him, and I don’t feel like anyone is done with that franchise, certainly not yet. So, I hope so, sooner or later. The studio is very busy at the moment, director David Ayer is directing something else at the moment, but I’m sure they have plans, just none that they’ve shared with me.”

It's safe to say Suicide Squad isn't very popular 'round these parts - but if Courtney and the rest of the cast did return for a sequel, do you think there's potential to deliver?

We probably won't hear about Suicide Squad 2 until much later. Maybe after Justice League we'll hear some news or rumours about Suicide Squad 2.

@PrinceAwesome - Now that they have introduced us to the concept of the squad and the major players I could see a sequel down the line, incorporating villains introduced throughout the years in the DCECU. Maybe bring in Deathstroke after The Batman, KG Beast survives Batman v Superman (Horribly disfigured and missing his arm) and a few smaller villains with a plot that leads to a potential Suicide Squad v Justice League?

@BANEofExistence - you see, with me its different, i would love to see Deathstroke and K.G. Beast in the next installment (maybe have the j.l.a. interfere for a bit), but set all these characters in a time and place that's interesting. The Squad are basically a black ops militia task force, I want to see this movie take some direct inspirations from war movies where every character is a soldier with different brash personalities. i want those personalities to be explored, along with the psychosis behind the villainy of our antagonists. People seem to forget that most of the Squad members are fkin insane mentally; I want to see them crack under pressure when the stakes are in the all-time high.

Take some pages out of the Ostrander series and you can have a really good roguish black ops squad movie with these antagonists. The one thing S.S. really fked up on was making everything all jokey and heartful. These are villains we're talking about. Killers, murderers, thieves, etc. They are [frick]ed up in the head. Instead of saving the world, these guys would rather see it burn. They shouldn't be depicted as lightly in the next installment.

@Chewtoy - sad, but tru :/ im happy it grossed well in the box office. imo, the movie was alright. kinda dissapointed, but i came in with great expectations. its not as horrible as everyone around here says it is. but yeah, the suits wont let a hard r squad movie pass by.

He was my favorite part, he needs to at least cameo in Flash. I want a sequel but let Ayer do his thing, it's pretty clear the response to BvS and the SS trailers affected the direction of the film. If you let him make a more grounded gritty SS more in line with End of Watch and have it be the Squad VS. Joker which it SHOULD have been then it'll be fine. D.C. Needs to learn to stop meddling that's what held back Marvel Phase 1 a little bit

Maybe. God knows it was a lot of fun and certainly left the door open for future installments but the characters are probably better served spiraling off into their own collective parts of the DCU. that being said, if they did come back, i'd be down for another go.

Despite its problems I thought Suicide Squad was lovely, man. Can't help it. If that movie had come out in the 90's (somehow with that cast) it would be very fondly remembered.

@beane2099 - I didn't love it but it's definitely a lot better than most give it credit for. The problem with a lot of fans - particularly CBM fans - is that there's no middle ground. Everything is either "OMG best movie ever!" or completely worthless in their eyes.

@beane2099 - i'm pretty middlegrpund about about most things. But suicide squad was a poorly made film. Poorly executed. They had so much potential with iconic characters and i really think they shit the bed. It was bad.

@beane2099 - I can see the positives, albeit there were few imo, and the negatives. Deadshot was great, Harley was solid and the film is dumb fun imo. A ridiculous romp.

I think what rubs some folks the wrong way is that this had the major potential to be a really good movie. But as a film, it was poorly structured, had a bad script, some gaping plot holes and laps in logic, even for a cbm.

@RorMachine - ive upgraded my opinion of bvs to "meh" instead of "burn this shit", so the middle-ground is possible for me. i'd put civil war in the middle-ground as well.

but i really see ss as being a huge step in the wrong direction, and legitimately don't understand where you are coming from.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Oh like I said, it had lots of problems - not the least of which was that there was clearly ANOTHER movie underneath the one we got. Then there was the Joker, the fact that the SS was essentially fighting themselves, the way-too-many-songs soundtrack. I could go on. And yet, I still enjoyed watching it. I liked Enchantress' glowy jiggly dance, Diablo, Deadsmith, and a lot of the songs (yeah I'm referencing the soundtrack as a problem AND a help - I'm complicated like that). In my opinion, nothing the DCEU can throw at me can top the disappointment of BvS so I guess "meh" works for me by comparison. However, as a addition, I'll also say I really liked X Men: Apocalypse as well.

@RorMachine - I agree. When I hear "it was just okay" all I can think is "well job done then." It seems like there's this mentality that EVERY movie now has to be a game changing mind blower and anything less is garbage. I'm an all around comic fan so I have no dog in the DC/Marvel fight. I think most of the Marvel films are good, not necessarily great, but good. There are a few really great ones though. For me DC topped out at The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight Rises, GL, MoS, BvS have all been varying degrees of disappointment for me. But SS just hit the right button. More than anything it was just fun watching that group of characters and that can really carry a movie. I won't argue with anyone who hated it though.
