James Gunn Seemingly Confirms That THE SUICIDE SQUAD Will Not Be Part Of New DCU Canon

James Gunn appears to have confirmed that The Suicide Squad will not remain part of the new DCU canon, which will begin with Superman: Legacy. Okay... but what about Waller and Peacemaker?

We know that the new DCU currently being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran will serve as a relaunch of Warner Bros.' previous DC Comics-based universe, but will it be a full reboot, or will some characters remain on board?

Conflicting reports have led to a lot of confusion, especially when we know that Gunn will soon begin working on a second season of Peacemaker and a spin-off focusing on Viola Davis' Amanda Waller.

Both of those characters originated in the Suicide Squad movies, so surely Gunn's more recent "requel" will be canon... right?

Responding to a fan on social media who was curious about Nathan Fillion taking on the role of Guy Gardner in Superman: Legacy after already playing TDK (who did survive, by the way) in The Suicide Squad, Gunn seemingly confirmed that the events of his film will not remain canon in the DCU.

"DC Studios movies (and canon) start with [Superman: Legacy]."

Seems pretty cut and dry... if it wasn't for those aforementioned The Suicide Squad spin-off shows! Will John Cena and whoever else reprises their roles simply play new versions of their old characters, or does Gunn plan to develop these projects completely separately from the movies and TV shows that will all be interconnected as part of the DCU?

Gunn has also indicated that we haven't seen the last of Margot Robbie's take on Harley Quinn, so we're still left with a lot of questions.

@Doomsday8888 - Don't think so. People are asking him too many times and I think he's getting his words mixed up. He said that Superman Legacy is going to be the start of the DCU movie canons, but creature commando (animated series) may come out before it and will be canon to the DCU too. I think he confirmed that Peacemaker S2 and Amanda Waller TV are also canon to the DCU.

Movie canon starts with Superman Legacy but the 1st canon thing we may see are the tv shows like Peacemaker, Amanda Waller, and Creature Commando. Only confirmed situation to be like MCU's Daredevil is Blue Beetle....movie won't count but the actor and character are returning in a new universe and canon.

@Doomsday8888 - I’m ready it like this. All these live action projects until Superman: Legacy are in the same boat as those DC animated movies. Elseworlds, if you will. He can’t outright, outright say that yet until they’re out the way, but that’s what he means.

@mastakilla39 - He's never actually said that Creature Commandos and Waller are in the same continuity as Superman Legacy and the rest.

It could be that they take place in a different universe (maybe the same universe as TSS, Peacemaker and Blue Beetle, possibly the Clooneyverse), but that they still lay seeds for the story that James is telling.

That the STORY starts with Creature Commandos, but the actual universe starts with Legacy.

@PlusUltra - Yeah, he doesn't have a sniper...Peter is just fine. If anything it builds anticipation for a current fanbase that seemingly hangs on every word said or written. Actors want to work with Gunn, hence the casting news...time will tell if there casting director is a good as Finn. In the meantime he's already created more buzz for the studios projects and, outside of sycophants on YouTube and Twitter, imo he's made it clear he's making a greater commitment to this universe than the previous regime did. He's already casted 2 members of their F4 while Marvel weathers corporate BS. He realizes imo, and from what I've gathered on this site, that Marvel has become the villain of sorts and is capitalizing on that.

@ObserverIO - Yes he did in the Michael Rosenbaum podcast. If Creature Commando is released before Superman Legacy than he said that will be the start of the new DCU. Superman Legacy is only going to be the 1st "film" in DCU canon, not the "start" of it. DCU is going to include all movies, tv show (live & animated), and games. Whether they are "guaranteed to crossover" is unknown at this point.

Its just going to be like the current MCU. Daredevil, Moon Knight, and She Hulk are set in the same canon as the films but there are no concrete plans to ever crossover them over.

@ObserverIO - Your right on the Peacemaker and Waller situation though, he never said they were in the DCU but he wrote both shows. He will only direct Peacemaker S2 because Waller is shooting at the same time as Superman Legacy. Once Superman wraps though, he's shooting Peacemaker S2 afterwards. Apparently he's going to shoot every episode of S2 this time compared to only have in S1.

@mastakilla39 - I really hope he confirms some things. Sounds like Peacemaker Season 2 will be in the DCU but Season 1 isn't.

I wonder if they'll do the mandella effect joke again but differently. Like maybe it's the Berenstein Bears in the DCU.

@ObserverIO - Same. I think we all are getting confused by the word "canon" because it doesn't mean the same thing. There is universe canon where everything happens in the same universe than there is story canon where all properties are supposed to be tied to an overarching storyline that leads somewhere like the MCU crossover films.

Multi-verse canon is just the biggest bullshit of them all because "everything" is therefore considered canon.
