THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star John Cena Says The Movie Is Neither Sequel Nor Reboot But IS 100% James Gunn

The Suicide Squad star John Cena has shared his take on why this movie featuring Task Force X is neither a sequel nor reboot, but is instead from the "most amazingly twisted creative" mind of James Gunn.

Suicide Squad was released to mostly negative reviews in 2016, but it drew big numbers at the box office and created a lot of new Task Force X fans (many of whom are now campaigning for Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheAyerCut).

This August, The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters and on HBO Max, but is it a reboot or sequel? That's a question we've been asking for some time and it appears the answer lies somewhere in between. According to Peacemaker actor John Cena, the movie is neither a follow-up to David Ayer's version nor a completely new approach to the villainous team.

"Perception is everything, and I won’t change your perception. But I’ll offer my own," the pro wrestler turned actor told The Observer in a recent interview. "The Suicide Squad is neither a sequel nor reboot. The Suicide Squad is the Suicide Squad from the brain of one of the most amazingly twisted creative minds in James Gunn that I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting."

"James is so gifted in so many ways," Cena continued, heaping praise on the Guardians of the Galaxy director. "The good thing about what’s going on with The Suicide Squad is exactly what you’re saying. People are kind of expecting to be something. But nobody’s ready to see this movie. Everyone needs it in their life, trust me. But nobody’s ready to see what it is. Nobody."

It sounds like Gunn has come up with something entirely his own with The Suicide Squad, and that's no bad thing. The director is already hard at work on spinoff series Peacemaker, a project that reunites him with Cena (it's expected to arrive on HBO Max early next year and possibly as soon as January).

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, 2021.

It's a sequel, plain and simple.

It's a sequel in the sense that there was already an SS movie and some of the characters from the first will be returning. It's kind of a reboot because it's doing something new with the property and following the exact same story from the last movie. Gunn called it a standalone sequel and I will acknowledge it as such.

It’s pretty much a soft-reboot, isn’t it? Kind of like how Thor 3 was considered a soft-reboot

"Neither Sequel Nor Reboot"

They love saying this LOL. So afraid of the shit show that was Ayer's. Testament to how messy the DCEU is. Gunn's SS is a step in the right direction though.

So far, we have:

Re-quel
Reboot-quel

and I'm adding:

Seboot
Seboot-quel

The silliest one is "Seboot" because it sounds like an actual item you would wear in the sea.

But IS 100% James Gunn

100% Gunn is Tromeo & Juliet. There is less than a 0% chance that a big studio would ever let James Gunn go 100%.

@Reeds2Much - Yea and I doubt he or any of the other actors have watched his Troma stuff.

So it's a Ghost Rider 2 situation.

@MUTO123 - Hmmmm. That is an interesting point. I've seen and have both movies, but I didn't pick up on what you are stating regarding Spirit of Vengeance while watching it.

Will you elaborate? If not, that's cool. Maybe I'll pick up on it the next time I see it (it has some great 3D action which I like to watch).

@LSHF - How they acknowledge that the first movie happened but don't spend any real amount of time dwelling on it and bring back barely any of the characters, and it has a completely different style and tone to where it could also function as a semi-reboot.

Hopefully The Suicide Squad is a better movie.

@MUTO123 - Yes but Ghost Rider 2 was unequivocally worse than the first. This Suicide Squad looks to be unequivocally better

@JFerguson - Yeah, I forgot to clarify in my first post: The Suicide Squad looks leagues better than the first Suicide Squad and either Ghost Rider movie.
