Smallville: Executive Producer Kelly Souders on the Final Episodes of the Series

IGN sat down with Smallville executive producer Kelly Souders to discuss the final epiisodes of the series, and we have excerpts from that interview.

IGN: Obviously the fans were incredibly relieved to learn Michael Rosenbaum definitely would be back.

Souders: As were we! I was very happy when that phone call came through.

IGN: Fans are very curious to see Lex's return and what he and Clark's relationship is like when he does.

Souders: Really, the focus has been about how these two guys have impacted each other's lives. And I think, starting in the pilot, realizing how it was always just such a twist on the way we always imagined them, as mortal enemies. And in fact, they showed up in the pilot as something quite different. I think in the finale, what our goal was, is obviously we're launching them towards the future, where they are going to be mortal enemies. But what we didn't want, was to make their last interaction something that was just a catfight between them. So we go one step further I think, in showing how they will impact each other, in making the greatest hero and the greatest enemy we'll ever know.

IGN: Suffice to say, Lionel Luther potentially working with Darkseid isn't a good thing?

Souders: Lionel is really going to be… He's just a bad seed, let's face it. Let's try not to be in denial anymore. It's been ten years. Plus, it's not quite the Lionel that we knew at the beginning of the series. This is the twisted Lionel from the other world. But when he interacts with anybody, it's just always bad news, and delicious at the same time.

IGN: We're going to be seeing Kara again soon. Last time, she was trying really hard to get her cousin to fly. Might she help give him that last "boost" he needs, as it were?

Souders: I'll just say that he doesn't need that last boost from her. I think the thing that becomes very clear is that she, in her final episode, really has her own destiny.

IGN: A path away from Clark?

Souders: Yeah. Supergirl becomes Supergirl and not Superman's cousin.

IGN: You got very, very close to the full Supergirl costume last time. All that she was missing was the symbol and the cape. Could we see the full thing next time?

Souders: Well, actually, when we see her, she's kind of in a very different place than the last time we met up with her. So she's been on a bit of a journey since then.

IGN: On the costume front, there's been so much curiousity about how much you will show of Clark in the Superman suit. How much conversation did you guys have about that yourself?

Souders: God, endless… [Laughs] And I think it was more about what will allow us to sort of stay true to Smallville and that this is simply the journey between a boy and Superman and then how much will allow us to feel we're seeing the launch of that great hero.

IGN: And at the end of the day, you guys found what you think was the right balance?

Souders: Yeah, it's definitely been a balancing act!

IGN: The episodes are still in post-production, so there's still work to be done, but have you had that sense of, "Wow, we finished! We're done filming Smallville!"?

Souders: Yeah. For us, we're usually so busy doing prep of shows that when that kind of came to an end and we wrapped up the last episode we were prepping and got deep into the shooting of it, things slowed down tremendously. I'd say probably 80% of our time is devoted to prep, so it ended quickly, that part of it, and it was very strange to be able to actually sit down and do one thing.

The series started out good then became to much of a love story, but now that it is wrapping up it is awesome. It tells the story we all waited for and now it is over. (SUPERMAN IS THE BEST)

GDSuperguy, I'm betting on last five seconds, and even then we only get to see a partial. Clark runs toward the camera and rips his shirt open revealing the "S".

"I think it was more about what will allow us to sort of stay true to Smallville and that this is simply the journey between a boy and Superman". Yet one has to acknowledge that Smallville's best moments were when it has edged closer to Superman and not languishing on about the boy.

Yeah, I think two hours of Clark in the suit is too much like "right"; no way the tv gods would be that merciful.

Unfortunately, I think we'll only get a quick shot of him as Superman. But, I for one, have enjoyed Smallville for 9/10 years. I have a hig-end, intense, corporate America job and I TOTALLY enjoy the lightness, the campiness, of a lot of episodes some of you other fan boys pan so ferociously. It makes me laugh, thanks for the mammaries and the memories, and the momories of mammaries Smallville!!

Anything short of at least 15 minutes of him full blast in the costume would be very disappointing. We've been waiting 10 years.... and all we want is 15 minutes at the very end. But like all of us.... we'll just have to take what we get!

last shot will definitely be some random saying "look! Up in the sky!" and then a shot of him in full costume flying

I think so many wanted season 7-10 to be what we'll get from the last few episodes. I didn't like every episode from those seaons but I didn't hate them all either. At least Clark and the Blur punched some shit from time to time (amid the love stories). I won't waste my time with predictions, but we'll for sure see him as Superman.

@ thegoddamnsuperguy

you & other fans, deserve more than five minutes.

you lot put up with the show for ten years through all its ups & downs.

it should be at least half an hour,i also have doubts of it being the exact iconic costume.

i think it'll have changes made to it.

I have been a Smallville fan since day one. It is the Elseworlds story of Clark Kent and the liberties that the show have taken have been more hits then misses. The fact that so few TV shows make it 10 years is a testament to the show's cast, production team, and the the fans that support this show. No other comic-booked themed show has made it this far. Give credit where it is due. 30 seconds or 30 minutes of Clark as Superman is not changing any of that.

@ trdtrdtrd - You are a passage through which excrement passes. Rectal Passage or Anal Hole. I think you get were I'm going with this....

Anyway

Please stop trying to peddle your crap on this site. Every story seems to have a comment by you trying to entice people with your B.S.

Moderators please look into this. if one gets away with it 50 more start.

I really like this site and would not want Morons like this to ruin it for everyone else.

The only way any real fans should feel cheated is if he doesn't wear the costume at all in the finale....which he obviously will....so just shut up cause you sound like a bunch of ignorant [female dog]es.

If the costume and being called Superman were really that important, Smallville wouldn't have lasted 2 years and we'd all still be watching Dean Cain's awful show.

grif, you're kind of like Norm from Cheers, you're expecting to show up, but unlike Norm, nobody wants you around, that may explain why you're constantly putting you're oh so hilarious negative comment filled videos on here.

on a side note, for the most part, Smallville has been a very enjoyable show, yes it's had it's ups and downs, but all shows do, for all of you complete followers of Superman comics and disdain the show because it doesnt fit what you already know, grow the [frick] up, it's a different take on the ENTIRE STORY, and don't comics change the backstory a bit from series to series, SHOCKING!! Is there a lot of drama on it? yes, but guess what if it went with the classic style of "bad guy does this, superhero must stop it, superhero wins" it would have gotten boring and lasted about 1 season.

Just so you guys don't think I'm full of shit, seasons 3-7 were pretty much the low points of the show, season 8 was good until the [frick]ing awful fight with Doomsday, season 9 had a very slow start but picked up pretty well, loved the final fight at the end, and this last one has been pretty damn good though, getting tired of hearing the words "The Darkness" though, I'm a music junkie and I don't care for that band.

I have been a Smallville fan for over 7 years. I have all the seasons on DVD and watched the episodes repeatedly. I'm not going to sit here saying Smallville has been perfect, because it sure as heck hasn't been. There have been plenty of amazing seasons and episodes, and the acting, even tho some people don't agree, has been really good. I love Smallville, but some of the stuff they've done has driven me bananas. I think seasons 1-5 were the best. Went down hill after that and picked up some in season 9.

Season 10 has been....descent. Hearing them say, " I think it was more about what will allow us to sort of stay true to Smallville and that this is simply the journey between a boy and Superman and then how much will allow us to feel we're seeing the launch of that great hero." on how much we'll see Tom in the suit, doesn't really give me much hope that we'll have the EPIC ending we've hoped for. Especially given Smallville's ability to not move forward and staying with the past.

Clark should have DEFINITELY started flying in season 5, maybe even season 4 when he came back. Saying Kal-El can fly but not him?? What the heck is that about.. I never quite understood the whole "no flights" rule. Having him fly doesn't mean he's Superman already, it would be just another ability he has to master. Until he takes on the responsibility of being that protector, puts on the suit, and people refer to him as Superman, he would not be Superman.

Anyway, having Michael back as Lex is great. IMO, he's definitely the best Lex hands down. So that should make the episode better, even if he's only in like 2 scenes. I really really hope that they prove some of us wrong and give one hell of an ending for us fans who have been waiting 10 seasons for him to become Superman and put on the suit.

Ten years we've spent waiting for 2-3 minutes of Superman on TV. Hell of a build up. It better be great.

Sorry Batfan, try again. Their history for letting us down. try 2-3 seconds of Superman on TV, if that.

I really want to see Clark as Superman. I'm a huge fan of the show, so I want to see this happen like all of us do.

Okay, look folks, they're being very cloak and dagger about this issue. It's not like she can say, "Oh, Tom will be in the suit for 10 minutes". I have no doubt that we'll see Superman at good length given where the story is going and add to the fact that Tom Welling really basically became more open to the idea the later into the series they went. Part of her dancing around it is because they want you to watch.

Good; maybe they'll actually get the last two episodes right, with so much time on their hands, 'cause quite frankly, they've haven't done sh1t to this point. REAL TALK.
