SMALLVILLE Star Michael Rosenbaum Would Return For A Movie Sequel; Still Hopes To Make Animated Follow-Up

Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum has admitted he would be willing to return for a movie sequel and shares an update on where things stand with his and Tom Welling's long-rumoured animated follow-up...

Smallville ended in 2011 after 10 seasons and 217 episodes; the series had a good run and, while those later seasons proved hit-or-miss, there was still plenty to love about the long-running DC TV series.

DC Comics continued the story of Tom Welling's Superman in a "season 11" comic book series, but in terms of a true sequel, there have been rumblings about him and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum developing some sort of animated follow-up with the original cast and creators.

Talking to Screen Rant about those plans, Rosenbaum said, "All I could share is that it's a great idea. We have Al and Miles, the creators of Smallville backing us up. When it's the right time, we'd like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time. We had the strike, we had a change of executives at DC - one being one of my best friends in the world, James Gunn."

"When the time's right, I think it's something that's a no brainer, unless they have other ideas. We'd like to do it - the whole cast would like to do it," the actor continued. "They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is."

"I asked Tom the other day, 'If Al and Miles came to us and said, 'We got this great idea for a Smallville movie. We want you guys to get in shape for the next two months, and then we're going to go shoot this movie like a real finale...' We were both like, 'Yeah!' If it was right, I think that would be dope. So many other shows are doing that. I would certainly consider it."

Rosenbaum went on to say, "But if Al and Miles did it, and wanted to do a one and half hour movie, I think Tom and I - we'd all consider it. I think we'd have fun going back, but we'd have to really work to get back into those characters in that mindset because we're a lot older. But if you shaved my head and you put makeup on me, it still works!"

While a Smallville revival would be welcomed by many fans, it seems unlikely that Warner Bros. Discovery or DC Studios would be open to spending money on resurrecting a show which has been off our screens for close to a decade and a half.

Plus, would Welling be willing to finally wear the Superman suit? He largely avoided it in the series finale, but for what it's worth, Rosenbaum is open to shaving his head again!

"For sure!" he tells the site. "Look, I probably wouldn't play Lex again unless James had offered me Lex Luthor. Of course, I would have taken Lex Luthor [for the new Superman movie.] But he didn't, which is fine, and Nicholas Hoult was just on the podcast. I love him, I finally met him and he came over the house. He's such a great actor, and I have no doubt that he will be fantastic as Lex."

We can't fault the actor's enthusiasm, but this long-discussed Smallville sequel clearly isn't even close to receiving a green light. It's good to know that all the key players are willing, of course, and stranger things have happened over the years...

They have definitely made dumber animated projects. I would love to see a bunch of unmade concepts turned into animated projects. Tim Burton’s Batman Forever maybe?

@Saintsinnister - I wouldn't mind an animated anthology that adapts the unmade stories. Think Superman Lives, Justice League Mortal and even a streamlined version of Snyder's JL 2 could be fun.

As long as the show doesn’t contradict the ending we got for Smallville’s Clark in the COIE crossover on the CW then I’m cool with it…

I feel it was apt for that version of the character though i could see this being in-between when Clark was active as Superman so if that’s the case then I’m down for it (doubt it will happen though)!!.

However idk about the entire cast coming back , I could do without one (coughAllisonMackcough)

@TheVisionary25 - As far as I know what happened during the CW crossover takes place after the comic continuation of Smallville. But if you've seen COIE you'll know that the old multiverse gets wiped out. With Smallville's universe being confirmed as part of the new multiverse they would have an opening to retcon some stuff from the comic continuation.

I highly doubt they would retcon what we see in COIE because that literally takes place years upon years after Clark took up the mantle of Superman. I believe he was Superman for at least a decade by that time.

Honestly, the time couldnt be better. At this point they had time away from the show and now are in this special time with their various podcasts and such, fans are loving reliving the nostalgia with them. I think they are at the perfect place even as actors to finally 100% commit to playing Superman and Lex. Now lets me honest, they might not be quite as good of actors anymore to carry a big Smallville movie, they were only TV actors before. But with the right script, they could make an iconic follow up.

Also , I could see Rosenbaum as one character in the DCU….

He’s in his 50’s now so the clock is ticking but I think he could portray Boston Brand/Deadman well.

They genuinely could have made a bunch of ‘elseworlds’ streaming movies after they did Crisis. Smallville, Routh Superman, Conroy Batman.

@HulkisHoly - they were solid, nothing more. It had its moments though. How it introduced Wonder Woman an the GL core was very cool. And the Batman v Superman confrontation is smart and fun. It brought an old-school Superman feel to the character.

The big issues was the art was never consistent and sometimes the subplots being juggled were too much. Its a pretty decent continuation of the show and feels like it would fit with what was on the tv screen, for the most part.

I'd only care if Tom suites up. No excuses. Tom has said in the past that wasn't the show he signed up for and it had to be earned. Tom played Clark 200+ times for 10 seasons and will highly likely keep the record for playing that character. For a generation of fans Tom is their Superman. It has been earned sir.

I’d love to see him return as Lex Luthor, but like, how? Clark doesn’t have his powers. I would love to see Mrs. Kent (Annette O’Toole) return, but I think she should die in the movie, it would be a very emotional moment between Clark and his mother.

Bring back Pete and Lana, but Chloe died for getting too close to Lex Luthor’s business dealings and had her killed

Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) investigates his wife’s death and Aquaman (Alan Ritchson aka Reacher) could return for the movie.

Have him finally meet Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince.

This would work better on a streaming service like Max or something.

@Timerider - What happens during the COIE crossover is set at least a decade after Clark became Superman as far as I know. The destruction of the old multiverse also creates the potential of new stories. They basically have two main options.

1. A animated series that borrows ideas from the comic book continuation of Smallville. There wouldn't be any continuity issues because the stories from the comic book are set in old destroyed multiverse.
2. A live action streaming movie that tells one final good story set within the Smallville universe of the new multiverse. Either a story shortly after Clark becomes Superman or a story leading up to him giving up his powers in favor of spending a normal life with Lois and their kids as seen in the COIE crossover.

The strenght of DC has always been it's different iterations and takes on these characters, it's healthy to have variety just like how Marvel is now doing it with X-Men 97.

I hope this comes to fruition, I would like to see it. Elseworlds projects never failed DC's live-action endeavours, especially on TV and when it comes to Smallville there's no better proof of it.

If Gunn is smart and isn't afraid to share the spotlight he shouldn't waste time in greenlit it.
