Tom Welling Looks Back On The First Ever Episode Of Smallville!

The actor looks back at what it was like to play Clark Kent for the first time in the pilot episode of Smallville and how both he and the show have changed since then...

In a recent interview with Zap2it, the actor was asked to share his thoughts on the pilot of Smallville, his experience filming that episode and how he and the show have progressed over the past decade. To read what Welling had to say about CW series, Hellcats (which he executively produces) click on the link below.

"I've revisited the pilot a few times, sometimes by accident, other times for research, and I'm always amazed how far we've come. I'm 10 years older and 30 lbs. heavier -- I don't know how that happened! -- but I think the pilot still holds up. It doesn't necessarily look dated or out-of-touch."

"David Nutter, who directed it, really had a good sense of what it needed to be. He executed it fantastically, but I remember thinking, 'Somebody tell me what to do.' I had no idea. Looking back now, I know that David created a warm, safe environment just to explore the character and allow the emotionality of the scenes to blossom, He set the standard for me as I went on to direct."

The two-hour finale of Smallville airs on the CW on May 13, later this year!

Good for you, Tom. I have a feeling you'll be looking back at this show for the rest of your life and wonder what could have been :-) enjoy these last few weeks of fame cause at the end of this, your career will be over. Love Smallville but enough's enough

As I've said before, Welling bread is well buttered with Hellcats. We'll probably never see him in front of a camera again but thanks to his saps (sorry, fans) his career is far from over.

Oh and BTW, when Welling looks back at this show (if he ever will) he'll have a good old laugh at all those he has strung along for 10 YEARS for what I'll bet will be NOTHING.

I think many will look back and miss Smallville. Love it or hate it, it gave us the pretty damn good Clark Kent, the greatest Lex Luthor, a smoking hot Lois Lane and a Kent family few could find fault with. Nothing's perfect, as I'm sure the haters will point out below....

I wish they would spin off for a 24 episode season called Metropolis! Even if it got cancelled one season would be amazing! Finally donning the suit it would make lois and Clark the new Adventures of superman look dumb as hell!

@YourMomNaked- Agreed. I have had my gripes with Smallville in terms of certain characters being watered down. But you said it perfectly. I loved their Kent family the most...they had the greatest Lex Luthor (next to john shea of course ;D) a smoking hott lois and yes...they fleshed out the Clark Kent character the most.

But Welling better wear the damn suit in the finale. lol

@Arrion
I know it's just a rumor but ever since this season started we hear things about how there may be yet another season. But just like Favre, sometimes it's better to quit 2 seasons too late than keep going

best kent family ever = maybe
best lex luthor ever = gene hackman
hottest lois lane ever = erica durance
best clark kent ever = christopher reeves

tom welling can't act to save his life.

everything on the show has been dragged out for far to long.

-the length of the show
-getting clark flying
-putting on the outfit.

the show has a crappy creative team.

it has zero budget but tries to deliver classic foes such as doomsday & darkseid, the result is they look pathetic.

once this show has gone, maybe they can fill the time spot with something decent.

Have to say i will miss the show when it is gone. They have done a few things that have raised my eyebrows but all together I think they made a fun show that I have enjoyed. That said, I am really looking forward to seeing how the close the story...

@Marvel72 -I think Michael Rosenbaum was a better Lex than Gene. He has been the best and most convincing live action Lex.
