Tom Welling Talks Smallville Finale, The Suit, Michael Rosenbaum's Return And More!

In a recent interview with TV Guide, the Smallville actor talked in detail about the show, and below are some of the most interesting excerpts. If you'd like to hear more from Welling on why he thinks it's been such a long running success, his future plans and more, follow the link below to head on over to the site.

You've already filmed the series finale and you have just a couple more weeks left. What's going through your mind so close to the end?

I find myself pretty excited to, in a sense, graduate. Every summer for the last 10 years, just after July 4th, I've come back here. And this year, I won't. I am anticipating that around that time is when I'm probably going to start more reflection. Because we are so busy now there isn't much time to think about that. So I'm looking forward to a reflective July.

What were you thinking as you filmed the very last scene?

I wasn't thinking that it was the last scene, because as much as it's the end of Smallville, it's the birth of this next phase in this character's life, which is pretty exciting. I've said this like a broken record, this show, to me, has always been about Clark Kent — it hasn't been about Superman. And it was very important at the end that we make sure that we wrap up the Clark Kent story. I hope that people have enjoyed the story that we've told.

With 22 episodes a year over 10 seasons has it been a challenge to stick to the "no flights, no tights" rule?

I don't know if this is going to come across the wrong way, but, no. Early on, with the concept of the show, it was never an option. There's been times when people wanted us to do it, but it's never been what the show is going to be. Some will say that after Season 7 we've actually become Superman, or some people refer to it as Metropolis. Sure, you can call it whatever you want. But to me, it just wasn't what this show was about. It's oddly that simple for me.

Michael Rosenbaum finally agreed to return one last time as Lex Luthor. What was it like working with him again?

It was fun. [laughs] It was a lot of fun. It was like he'd never left, but it was also like he'd been gone forever. But he stepped right back into it. Michael is extremely hilarious, he has this really unique ability to entertain and to be a completely opposite version of Lex until they roll the camera and then he goes right into it. I don't think he lost a beat, and it was one of the highlights of the season to spend the day with him.

How involved were you in the negotiations to get him to come back?

Oh, are you kidding me? I did everything I could. I texted him, I called him, we went to dinner. I'm just really happy that they were able to find a way for him to come back. I think it's so great for the show and the fans.

The two-hour finale of Smallville will air on May 13th.

Well said Tom !

If you watch Smallville for Superman, or even Superboy the show, your looking in the wrong direction, its the journey of the farm boy, who goes into the fortrace, and comes out as Superman, in the donner years, the ??? years !

But until then. A BIG [frick] YOU TO YOU ALL IN SMALLVILLE. YOU FCUKING BASTARDS, GODDAMN WELLING HAS BEEN CLARK FOR A BIZZILION OF YEARS. ENOUGH OF THAT. SHOW US THE GODDAMN SUPERMAN.

This show is called Smallville....since de begining we know that he isnt going to be Superman....but they decided to show the suit, now everyone wants Welling to put the suit on. If only they show the suit for 10 seconds I will be happy.

Im curious about how Darkseid is going to help Lionel, is he going to bring Lex.....or is going to be the always use Vessel theme?...I think Clark needs a phisical battle at the end, or the battle is going to be when he resist the darkness?

They need to show more of Darkseid...

@teabag.. this is a long debate that i'm not gonna try and start up again, its a pandoras box man :P

Well fair enough, that's your opinion, but it isn't that soapy to me, i think he should be flying, but it will be a better finale if he learns to fly, has his emotions in check, and suits up, all in one.

He's only 24 in the show, i mean Welling looks like a 30 y/o, but Clark Kent never became Superman in college !

It's true, Smallville has always been about Clark, but let's face it, Clark is Superman. I just hope the series Finale is huge. It's gotta feel epic, like this is what we've been waiting 10 seasons for.

Smallville has ALWAYS been exactly what it is. People expect Superman. They shouldn't. The Doomsday fight was to position DD for the fight with Superman. Anything with Darkseid will be to prepare or set up for Superman. Smallville has evolved and gotten better, but the core concept has always stayed the same. Enjoy Smallville for Clark Kent. If you expect Supes then you'll obviously be dissappointed.

Well, there we have it folks... In his own words, "I wasn't thinking that it was the last scene, because as much as it's the end of Smallville, it's the birth of this next phase in this character's life, which is pretty exciting". So, we wait till the very last scene to see the birth of Superman.

@PeteyParker- Welling could kick your ass in less than a minute, and then go about his day, and you know it.
If he didn't care about the fans, he wouldn't be putting on the costume.

If they want to show about Superman....they show Superman...its about how he transform in Superman..at the end they are going to show Darkseid and the costume...so fans are going to be pleased

Without even wearing the suit, Tom Welling is more Superman than Cavill or Routh will ever be wearing the suit. He is by far the best Clark Kent we've ever seen, too!

AEStark - 4/15/2011, 5:46 PM
@yourmomnaked Wow. How can someone who has never been superman be better than guys who wore the suit as part of the screen test? Wait for Man of Steel and see if that argument holds up.

mkn-You're a moron who couldn't spell cat if I spotted you the C and the T. This show was never about Clark. It was about staying on the air to make money. They had a real opportunity to contribute to the story and mythos and they blew it. Damn shame.

I love how you people are buying into the "no Darkseid" bit from the producers. When have they NOT done an interview that hasn't been smoke and mirrors?! The true fans of the show will keep the faith and the haters....well, they couldn't let anyone else enjoy anything if their lives depended upon it.

Ok Zone61 we'll see how that finale turns, BET him in the suit doesn't last longer 2 scenes. Don't get me wrong I love Smallville, but we've wanted to see Superman for 3 seasons now. I understand he's supposed to be Clark, but he couldn't have even flew till this season?

Every season finale on this show has beeen a let down, this series finale will be no different. For all the trolls out there that want to rake me over the coals again for voicing my disappointment, just whip out your DVD's and wallow in the mediocrity.

KalEl84
KalEl84 - 4/16/2011, 1:25 AM
@Knightstalker On the contrary, I can think of multiple season finales that were some of the best pieces of television ever. I'll name some: Exodus(Season 2), Covenant(Season 3), Commencement(Season 4), Vessel(Season 5), and Salvation(Season 9). Season 4's Commencement was one of the most epic finales ever, so I'd suggest that you re-watch them.
