Why the World Needs Smallville

For the lovers...not the haters

For a site that has loads of articles about everything about Smallville, there seems to be a lot of haters of this show that need to make comments constantly bashing it. These are my views as a long-time fan of the show that will really miss it when it's gone.

What did Smallville give us? First, a compelling look at a character that has never been fleshed out before in live action: Clark Kent. Has it taken a long time for him to become Superman? Sure, but what person in life finds their purpose in life without a journey. This has been a crazy ride for a boy to find his destiny as a man. He has known that he wanted to help people for years, but struggled with how to best go about that. He has been lurking in the shadows as a silent savior for 10 years on television, and in my opinion, the VRA storyline had very compelling arguments against the heroes. We all heard about the Seattle vigilantes and thought them crazy. Why weren't the police trying to stop them? They're fools for doing this. This season has examined that from a certain point of view, while giving us fantastic rides along the way.

Second, nearly everyone loves the Reeve's films, but aside from Superman, Lex, and Lois, the rest of the characters are forgettable. We have gotten some truly great developments for the likes of Jonathan, Martha, Lex, Lois, General Lane, the creation of Lionel Luthor, Lana, the fledgling Justice League, Justice Society, Check Mate, Suicide Squad, Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday(yes I said it), Toyman, the Legion, Perry White, and countless others.

What did the Reeve's films give us that Smallville hasn't? Superman in costume that's it. Superman never had any epic fights. In fact, he has never even thrown a punch on film before. I'm a die-hard fan of those films, but that's not what this article is about.

Third, we have witnessed Clark develop his powers over time and learn to control them. Those are some of the best episodes that have aired. It has also come full-circle with Clark helping to train Connor as well.

Fourth, Superman: the movie takes us from Smallville then skips something like 12 years with Clark trapped in the fortress. Our Clark had to leave the fortress. He will still be Superman at the same time, we just got to see him develop into that character over time. We weren't forced to believe that he went in a boy and came out a man.

Has there been missteps and retcons along the way? Sure. Let's name a few. Lana was stretched out way too long. Leaving her in that Super-suit was mistake. However, the scene where she has to say goodbye was heart-wrenching. They should have brought her back and sent her off to be happy somewhere.

The lack of flight after all this time. They have been dragging their feet on this since season one, and there doesn't seem to be a reason for it.

The death of "Jimmy." That one took me over a year to get over, even though we were told he wasn't the real Jimmy. They should have just left him the way he was, or never introduce him at all. Most people liked him, and got over the age difference pretty quickly.

Season 4: Lana as a witch, and story lines that didn't match up with their own timeline. Enough said, but that was 6 years ago get over it.

Time for the things that people to need to stop complaining about. Green Arrow. In the comics he was always the money behind the league, so it made sense to bring him on. He was not a replacement for Batman.

Doomsday. They took a boring character that was only known for one thing and turned him into a compelling character. Was the fight short? Of course. Was everyone raving about how good that season was before the finale? Yes. How quickly we forget. They set it up for the confrontation that bring about the death of Superman, and Clark wasn't strong enough yet to defeat him anyway.

The subtle changes to characters. DC has retconned every character in their books over and over for since they started writing comics. Smallville didn't do anything new here. The JSA was spot-on, and so was the Legion. People who complain about these interpretations seem to forget that Geoff Johns wrote these episodes. The almighty of the DC Universe was responsible for them all.

This show has brought more life to the DC universe than any other live action movie or show has ever done. The Reeve's movies didn't do it. Lois & Clark didn't get anything right. Superman Returns did more harm than good. Did their versions make everyone happy? You can't please everyone, but at least they made an attempt to breathe life into the DC expanded universe.

When this show is over we will have over 200 hours of Superman on film to go back and enjoy. You'll appreciate it when it's gone. Try to love it while it's still here.

Great Article!. I agree with you 100% regarding Smallville. I have loved it since i started watching it in season 2. I dont think that we can expect a better interpretation of Clark Kents journey on film in the years to come. Certainly any other attempt will be judged by the Smallville Standard. Gread read!

Awesome! Smallville rules, I still can't even believe it's ending.

My plan is to wait 2 years for some type of news of a spinoff or movie, and then I'm going on a killing spree.

Good read. I'm not the biggest Smallville fan, but I do enjoy the show to an extent. So kudos on the article and bring on the two hour finale.

@koonel as a die hard fan how can u say he never threw a punch he has a bit of a slug out with himself in the third 1, i'm not by any means calling his fights big or epic but he has thrown a punch.

@lokisilvertongue that's stretching a lot if you are looking for the punches he threw at himself. Awesome scene, but they throw each other around and throw things at each other. No punching, at least not from the "good Superman." He did punch Non in the Donner cut of Superman II though.

I'll be as upset as anyone if Darkseid is just a cloud, but I hope they offset that with some other really great storytelling. It will probably end along the same lines as a lot of the phantoms from season 6. He'll find a way to send Darkseid and his minions back through the portal that he opened at the end of season 9. It'll be set up for the future Supes/Darkseid battle. A cop-out sure, but that's how it'll probably play out.

teabag@ I hear a lot of complaining about the acting, but I just don't see it. The Kents, Lois, the Luthors, Zod, and most of the supporting cast are always excellent in my opinion. Welling plays the same character over and over, and he really shines when he gets to be bad Clark under red k or as Clark Luthor.

The ones I didn't really like were Whitney(who only lasted one season), Pete(who's a drug dealer in prison for a long time), and Zatanna. I know Zatanna's hot, but aside from looking like the character there's not much else there.

I have watched Smallville ever since it started pretty much so I am a die hard fan and I watch it every Friday. Yes I will admit the show has had it ups and downs but overall the show was great. The only season I did not like was when Lana became a witch that was the time I wanted Lana to leave the show. I enjoyed the Doomsday season I thought it was all round good even tho it was kinda anti climactic.

I will definitely miss the show. I hope Darkseid it awesome on the show to prove the haters wrong. I want the show to end with a bang.

I, too, am going to miss Smallville and agree that it has done a lot of good in keeping Superman alive. I enjoyed their take on the characters, their story arcs, and the development of Clark's powers. And as much as I've wanted to see him fly, I'm glad he hasn't done so just yet. If Clark would've flown by now the show would have lost a large element of interest and intrigue.

That being said, I think they have reached the end of their rope, and the finale is definitely due.

I will disagree with 2 things.
1) The Reeves films brought Superman to the world and put a face on Superman for millions of people. Even after Routh, Christopher Reeves still dominates as Superman.
2) Lois & Clark did a lot of things right. It was the Smallville of the 90's, taking place during Superman's adult life. The show rocked, as did Dean Cain.

Fin.

Love Reeve, love those films, love Lois & Clark. My point with that show was that they changed lots more source material than Smallville ever did, from the effects of Kryptonite on Supes to General Lane being a sports doctor instead of a General. Without the Reeve's films we would never have had Smallville.

I think it would be epic if at the middle of the episode clark gets the suit from the fortress and jor-el gives him his blessing and all and then we see him fly out of the fortress as superman. Then later darkseid confronts him somewhere, I don't know maybe its a big cloud over metropolis or something and as clark sees darkseid wreaking havoc he turns and runs to a phone booth to do the familiar transformation, darkseid spots him and omega beams clark as he enters the booth. Everyone is like "oh no" and such, then out of the crater and flames superman emerges and tears off the remainder of the goofy burnt reporter suit. and rushes forth to battle darkseid and save the day.

I got to stop letting my imagination run wild I am building up my hopes to much. I need to expect less or else I will get disappointed.

Doomsday in the comics was boring?

I'd hardly call someone who was created solely as a killing machine on Krypton, before being abandoned by its creators who tried to kill you, thus creating an understandable hatred for all things Kryptonian hardly boring.

Bloomsday although he started promisingly ended up being a Chloe lover crybaby whiner, who was created by Zod to fight in a war against Kal-El??? And... Man there's so many continuity issues with this show (Especially since Season 4) that I'd be here all day if I named them.

smallville is a shitstorm at best.

-the acting is bad from most of the cast especially welling & mack.

-no tights no fights

-45 minutes of romance & 5 minutes of action.

-all the other characters have flown apart from clark, lets give lois powers & clark loses his.

how many times has that story been told once maybe twice every season.

-the doomsday fight what a build up,were gonna see clark vs doomsday here we go.....he puts doomsday in a headlock & puts him in the ground.

fight over.

-budget of the show,if you can't make a awesome looking doomsday or darkseid why bother with such a cgi heavy character.

it fails to deliver all the time.

like teabag,i hope the finale is awesome for the fans.

but i wouldn't hold my breath.

Good effort!

The good: an ongoing superhero show. Decent effects. The first three years were pretty solid. Zatanna episodes have been the most fun despite being filler and somewhat silly.

The bad: I will highlight only the most egregious: Doomsday and everyone gets a super power at some point. Just too much.

Lastly, flight: they should never have had other Kryptonians fly (they didn't until the Kandorians) and his knowing he can fly but doesn't is just lame.

To finish: I will miss the show. I think consistency and linking all the seasons together should have happened.
Let's hope the finale is something to see!

Sorry Koonel, I have to disagree with you on a few points.
1. Dean Cain gave a very fleshed out version of Clark Kent that was easy to relate to and stayed far away from Donner's doofus Clark.

2. Jackie Cooper's version of Perry White was outstanding and not forgettable. Marlon Brando's version of Jor-El was AWESOME and not forgettable. Terrance Stamp's version of Zod has fanboys duking it out even today. As much as I am sooo ready to move on from the Donner-verse, I won't take away their obvious contributions. Some of their characters we would like to forget (Otis), while others have endured.

3 and 4 you hit the nail on the head.

You said that Lois and Clark didn't get anything right and I disagree. Every live action version of Superman has done some things right and other things fans didn't like. L&C was the first version of the Superman story to bring a CK that people could relate to. A grown up farm boy with amazing abilities and a grounded sense of values trying to be a positive force in the world while trying to have a normal life and pursue his passions (Lois and journalism).

Finally, when this show is over, we will have 200 hours of SMALLVILLE, not Superman. Seriously, have you even watched the show? No flights, no tights, no Superman.

@Koonel- NICE article and I agree with you to an extent- Smallville did good things.

But like what 'Knightstalker' said- L&C gave us a relatable Clark Kent...I still shed a tear when i think back to how in that show, Ma Kent was the one who made him the suit and helped him to clean out bomb debris from the suit. It's like...in the show he was relatable because of his close relationship with his mother, I mean, he wasn't quite as detached as say- Chris Reeve was. Reeve was at times...too perfect and flawless. Which could work for Superman to a degree. But Dean Cain's version was more flawed and more of a "momma's boy" which was good and relatable.

Not to mention even Rosenbaum admitted in one interview that JOHN SHEA's Lex Luthor portrayal was the one he used as inspiration for his Lex on Smallville.

John Shea played a smart, handsome, suave and sophisticated Lex Luthor. And also inspired the STAS animated Lex that so many people love and revere even today. "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" was real gold.

Welling would be honored to share the same scene with mister Dean Cain himself. And luckily for Welling, Mister Cain was charitable enough to appear in the show ;D

But again Koonel- GREAT article, Smallville overall is good. I have had many issues with the show but the good first few seasons are still fresh in my mind.

But i don't know...my favorite live-action Superman will always be Mr. Dean Cain himself! I have to see how Cavill does in the reboot. IF Cavill does a good enough job, he might get into my 2nd place slot. For now though my ranking goes- Cain, Welling, Reeve, Reeves, Alyn and then...Routh. I have to wait and see how Cavill does.

I jumped onboard the Smallville bus late in the game and was able to keep it inperspective (something most haters haven't been able to do without coming across as hypocritical - Lois & Clark?!). I agree that Smallville gave us so much more than ANY of the previous film and TV incarnations did: a fantastically portrayed Luthor arc; a compelling, well developed Kent family (perfectly cast and acted [Welling certainly had stellar moments]); arguably the best Lois (certainly the HOTTEST) and a very well done comicbook soap opera. Overall it was a good show and accoplished something beyond its original intent: a decade of success. Nothing's perfect and it had its imperfections. How some could hate on the entire show the way they do for isolated episodes or personal expectations and express fealty to Donner/Singer's films or L&C is beyond me. To each their own.

Personally, I dont like the Reeve films. I liked Christopher Reeve, but not the films. They were so smothered in cheese and camp-humor they became a parody of themselves. Maybe thats just symptomatic of our generation - many of us werent even born when they came out! For me (and no doubt others), Smallville was my first proper induction into the Superman mythology. I came to care about the characters and wanted to know more about them - thus pointing me in the direction of the wealth of Comics from across the decades. Because of Smallville, I have become a huge, huge Superman fan to the point of literally having the "S" crest tattooed onto my chest and my name in Kryptonian on the back of my neck (Tattoo's are clearly my other love...). Obviously it wasnt all wine and roses, some "filler" episodes took the piss a bit (Stilletto anyone?), but on the whole I really came to love Smallville and apreciate its attempts to delve more deeply into the Kryptonian side of the mythology - the Phantom zone, The Battle of Kandor, Braniac, Zor-El etc more than has ever been seen on film before or since. I genuinely have a love for Smallville, and I simply never felt that way about the old Reeve movies...

@Fartypants....Please forgive LP4 and me for appreciating the good things that came before Smallville. Please forgive us for not throwing the baby out with the bath water and jumping on the Smallville band wagon. Clearly since we have expressed frustration with various aspects of how our favorite superhero mythos has been handled by the show and not expressed unbridled feilty to it, we are simply hating trolls.

Personally, L&C had its share of facepalm moments as did the Donner/Lester movies. What frustrates me is when all of these versions have a chance to do something well and fail to do so. L&C could have used more of the rogue's gallery and didn't. They had the chance to use Brainiac with the Kryptonian orb story. Had there been three orbs we could have seen some version of Brainiac if they had been brought together. They also had their chance to use Zod in the New Krypton story arc but instead used a made-up character (still played very well by John Glover).

Donner and Lester's movies where too campy and portrayed CK as a bumbling doofus. It's just too difficult to watch.

Still, each version did some things right, as I stated in my previous comment, including Smallville, which portrayed a young CK scared of his own power and unsure of his place in the world.

In the future, please try to differentiate between frustrated fans and true haters. There is a difference.

@Knightstalker Lol. The distinction between some hater-trolls and frustrated fans is sometimes just too subtle, I guess, since throwing the baby out with the bathwater is often common amoung both. The hypocrisy is frustrating, too. No offense intended, btw, unless the shoe fits (of course).

I can get over the changes SV has made (though I found the lashing out at the Reeve films unnecessary for the sake of this argument) - my problem is that the writing took a deep nose dive after season 4. The Clark Kent character may have been fleshed out, but ten years of whining only turned him into an unlikable character. Yes, he has moments where we see him as the Superman we all know, but he quickly regresses the next episode. This lack of character development is frustrating for viewers like me. For characters like Mxyzptlk, efforts to make silly characters more believable merely reduced them to forgettable and generic characters. The show has an odd leather fetish that has stripped some characters of visual individuality.

Is it the worst television show ever produced? No. Does it have positive effects for the DC Universe as a whole? Sure. Characters have made their live action debut on Smallville (even when it didn't make sense, like Cyborg). But from a writing standpoint, it's still not a very good show, and a lot of the characters from the comic books lose essences that make them unique. For that reason, above all, I'm not sad to see the show end - I'm sad that it's seven years too goddamn late.
