World's Dumbest: Why Warner Bros. and DC Are Doing it All Wrong

Batman is set to join Superman in the follow up to Man of Steel. But is this the best way to go for Warner Bros. and DC? And is this really what we want in a Man of Steel sequel?

When the news came out at ComicCon that Batman would be joining Superman in the follow up to Man of Steel, like most, I was totally excited. I heard the line from The Dark Knight Returns, I saw the logo, and I lost control. But after some time to sit back and think about what this means, and to see some of the news/rumors already coming out about the movie, my mood has changed from excitement to disappointment.

Now, some of the news about this movie is strictly rumor at this point, but for the sake of this editorial, I'm going to assume it's mostly true.

The first rumor or idea that came out was partly influenced by Snyder's introduction to the movie with a line from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. The line suggested that the film wouldn't be as much of a Superman/Batman team-up movie, as it would be a Superman VS Batman movie. Now I know Snyder has said that just because he chose that line to introduce the movie, doesn't mean that he's adapting that story to the screen. But recently it has been reported that Snyder met with Frank Miller to toss around some ideas about the upcoming movie.

I have a problem with this. My problem is I don't want to watch the Avengers again. I don't want to watch Superman and Batman fight and disagree with each other for over half the movie. I want the two best DC heroes to become allies, and become friends, and become the founding members of the Justice League if that's what this film is eventually leading up to. I also don't want to see Batman come into the picture and come across as knowing what's best for Superman. I don't want to see an older brother/ younger brother, mentor/apprentice story. And I feel like if they choose to go down the VS road, that's exactly what we'll get. We'll get a Batman thinking he knows best, not trusting Clark, questioning him, doubting him. I loved Man of Steel because for me, it honestly gave me that sense of hope. The last thing I want is a dark, grumpy, Batman coming in and making us question the world's greatest superhero.

Another piece of news that's been rumored is that Warner Bros. and DC are looking for an older Batman, in the age range of late 30s to early 40s. Again these are just rumors, but names have been tossed around like Josh Brolin and Jim Caviezel.

I have a problem with this. This problem partly goes back to what I said previously about a mentor/apprentice relationship between Batman and Superman. Part of what I loved about the direction Snyder and company were going is that they were going to clearly establish that Superman is the top dog amongst heroes. He is the first, he is the best. WIth a 40 something Batman, that kind of goes out the window. That would make Batman a hero before Superman, and Batman having presumably almost 10 if not more years of hero work under his utility bet. Not so fast, I thought Man of Steel was the first building block for a DC Universe? Is it still the first movie in that universe, yes. But would Superman be the first hero? Would he be the reason other people suit up as heroes? Or even the reason a Justice League comes together? No. If Batman is the world's first hero, even if he's just kind of a Gotham City myth or legend, I think that takes away the significance of Superman in Man of Steel.

Those are just a couple of problems I see arising among fanboys. I could be totally wrong, I could just be voicing my own opinions. But I feel like if most people get over the excitement of seeing Superman and Batman on screen together, I think they are left with a lot of questions, confusion, and disappointment.

I loved Man of Steel. I loved the Krypton stuff. I loved how it really made you understand Clark's struggle. I loved seeing him put on the suit for the first time, and I really loved seeing him in his first fights. And after seeing it in theaters 7 times, yes, 7, I walked away every time with the same thoughts: I want more. I wanted more Superman. I saw all the open doors and all the unexplored ideas and all the ground work for a great Superman sequel, and I was excited for it. I was excited for Superman to finally get the same treatment as Batman. Three Superman movies. All Superman. All of his villains. All him.

But then a couple weeks ago that all changed. Now I have a Superman/Batman team-up/Superman VS Batman/Justice League lead-up/Man of Steel sequel. Yes I'll be excited when it comes out, yes I'll go see it, but is that really what we want? Really what Warner Bros. and DC need right now? I think not. With everything considered, I think they made the wrong call. A rushed call. And I'm afraid Superman fans may never get the Superman movie we want. Not a Krypton movie. Not a Clark Kent movie. Not a World's Finest movie. Not a Justice League movie. A SUPERMAN movie.

@SotoJuiceMan Reading into it much? He literally had one line describing their relationship as younger/older brother and I think you're the one going paranoid about that. If you don't know any adults (you talk about them as if they're a foreign concept to you. Which kind of betrays your age right there) that treat each other in a younger/older brother kind of relationship, you need to get out more.

As for the article, great read! I see your point about how an already-established Batman would sort of steal Superman's thunder as the first, major superhero in the DC universe.

But in Man of Steel, Superman isn't there yet. He's a rookie who couldn't stop the leveling of half his city. Frankly, he made a few rookie mistakes that I'm hoping an older Batman would take him to task on. Once they get past their differences in the sequel, I can definitely see Batman as sort of an older brother figure, looking out for Superman but still calling him out on anything he disagrees with. Not necessarily a worst case scenario, in my opinion.

I understand where you're comming from. I'm scared and excited at the same time. I'm trying to hold off judgement till we find out more concrete details. Most of what we know is rumors. What JokerFanHAhaHA said scares me the most.

My thing is, if they are looking for an old rugged washed up batman, just get Christian bale to return and connect it to Nolan universe.

@MrCBM56

You can't just "get Bale and connect it to the Nolan universe." Bale won't do it without Nolan. And Nolan ended his series with TDKR. Why would he make an ending and then just say "lol nevermind he's back"? He obviously planned this out and decided some time ago that TDKR was the end of it. And Bale would never go against Nolan's wishes and ruin their ending (and possibly the integrity of the entire trilogy) by coming back and teaming up with Zack Snyder's Justice League for a bunch of money.

Wow Reading all your posts and this editorial just shows how much u Dont know about the relationship ( or the different kinds of relationships ) Bats and supes have, this movie has great potential. And you all guys talk as if Thor , Captain América or Hulk had been deeply developed or etablished before the avengers .

Oh learn a new f*cking tune already!

I'm sticking to my guns, EVEN after the disappointment The Dark Knight Rises was, I still think this movie can make total sense with everything they've given us.

Aliens just destroyed half of Metropolis, MASSIVE collateral damage, and the last man standing has not only decided to stick around, but isn't exactly cooperating with the government.

Obviously, boys and girls of all ages are going to be wondering - WHO IS SUPERMAN FIGHTING FOR?

Lex Luthor HAS to be in this movie. Simply put, he has to be the loudest voice in the anti-Superman movement, and like anyone can guess - he's going to be developing contingencies for the inevitable confrontation. Because like Batman, Lex is crazy-prepared.

So what can Lex do? What can Batman do? No object on Earth can harm him. Therefore, we need Kryptonite.

I imagine there will be three parties.

Lex - Wants to control Superman
Batman - Wants to get a handle on Superman
Metallo - Wants to kill Superman

Obviously Metallo is my idea, and may not even be in the movie (at this point though, I think he will be)... but if he is, he will be a Superman/Lex creation - no, not like Nuclear Man. He'll have either lost everything in the Metropolis incident, or he'll want revenge for a dead friend/relative, blaming Superman. Either he'll be on life support, or he'll volunteer. Lex will build Metallo and sic him on Supes.

On the Batman side, Bats will be analyzing footage from the Metropolis incident, and knowing how powerful he is, will develop a series of contingency plans to neutralize Superman, should he prove untrustworthy.

Really, I just want someone to imagine the animated World's Finest movie, and instead of Joker and Harley, grab Metallo.

The only trouble there is determining Batman's personal stake in the event. Will Superman decide Gotham needs his attention? Will Batman tell Clark to stay out?

I would rather see a Green Arrow & Green Lantern team up similar to what they did in the comics than another Superman or Batman movie, let alone one with both of them.

@Tainted - Brilliant idea. That could really work, but the problem is thats good writing, I´m sorry, I would hold your breath for anything that good from a Snyder/Goyer co-written Superman/Batman movie.

By the way I´m starting to think, that the sheer damage Supes caused in Metropolis, just does not cater to a JL movie at all. Its kinda stupid. One fight of JL, they´ll destroy the whole planet, they´re likely living WMD. Snyder really dropped the ball there. Plus, why would Batman have just sat back and done nothing. Thats not the Batman I know. Even if it meant his death he would have found away to battle the Kryptonians, if they were causing that much destruction and panic.

But there is one solution alternate realities, or dimensions. I think this is the best way to approach The Trinity or JL movie. The heroes of different Earths brought together by an even more melovolent force. Mass confusion and panic on Earth as the very georgraphy of our planet transforms. To me this is how they can do a solo, then collective movie. But again thats thinking out of the box and not just at the money, so I doubt anyone will think of it.

@MarkOfTheDemon - I´ve answered you in my article.

At the writer of this article - good write up, gave you a thumbs up.

MOS2 will be a good sequel. We have Goyer who has wrote an excellent MOS origin that left things to be talked about in the sequel (Lexcorp stuff, Zod's armor, Kara's ship, destruction in Metropolis, World Engine creating Krytonite, Lois/Supes relationship, Clark still growing into Superman) . We wont get a whole movie with characters that goes out of character just to give comedy (War Machine). He is on a streak with 4 movies in a row with villains that are a real threat to the hero and can hold their own and take over a city or world.

We got one movie of Cap, Hulk, & Thor before they were even teamed up for JL. Where the hell did Nick Fury get the idea that even Hulk or Thor would even help without even interacting with them not even once. HE determined Stark was not gonna be part of Avengers but Whedon just threw that little bit out eh window like no that did not happen. That is what I call lazy writing right there and just threw things in just for the sake of it.

Can this movie please have a scene where Batman and Lex Luthor just start throwing big wads of cash at each other in the middle of a fight and Superman just starts picking it all up while mumbling something about a reporters salary and Lois' birthday?

I agree with MrCBM56!

They should have just linked it to the Dark Knight trilogy irregardless of what Nolan says. He does not own the movies and WB did that very thing with Burton's Batman AND Donner's Superman. So it can be done! As far as Bale supposedly not wanting to come back...here is a list of actors who did not want to comeback for sequels to their movies

1) Sigourney Weaver (Alien) went on to do four movies total
2) Harrison Ford (Star Wars) went on to do one additional movie
3) Ian Mclellan (The Lord of the Ring movies) signed for three more movies
4) Liam Neeson (Taken) signed up for two more films
5) Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) signed for two more Avengers movies
Daniel Craig (James Bond) signed for two additional movies

Most of the negative feedback WB/DC is getting now would have been avoided if they had gone that route. The way the story from the Dark Knight movies ends sounds exactly the way DC would like to proceed - Batman in his late 30's/ early 40's; he is coming out of retirement; and is suspicious of Superman. It is simply a wasted opportunity and one I think is going to ultimately sink the DC universe.

They made a great movie with MOS and got talked out of believing in it by a few extremely stupid fanboys and the usual clueless, ass-hat "critics". Now, they're ruining this wonderful thing they had. It makes me sad, what they've done with this idiotic Batman thing....really stupid. WB doesn't deserve DC.

The statement made by jp688 "Pure idiocy." is a fragment not a sentence. It should have been followed by an exclamation point which automatically negates anything he could possibly have to say.
