Zod? Oh, God.

Zod? Oh, God.

Is this a sign that Synder doesn't have any fresh ideas for Superman?

Filed Under: Superman

Ok, so now it is clear that Zack Snyder is going not only for a remake, however clever and ground breaking, but a remake none the less of Superman 2. It’s also clear that Snyder is at best unwittingly and at worst blatantly copying Smallville. Look I get that he is going to do his own version and it will be visually cool and all but “COME ON.” With Superman there are already so many known’s, and with the villain there was a chance to throw in something new and fresh to take a Superman story to places no one has gone before on screen.

But NNOOOhh, Snyder decided that he is going to make a really Sweet, awesome, cool, unique, and fresh, “REMAKE” WTF. I already know what some of you will say. I have seen the comments already. “This is just the first movie, and this will lead into the next film and the one after that.” The way I see it; there is no tomorrow. We need an awesome villain NOW! Not one in an imaginary “next film.”

Hey, Zack it’s not too late. You haven’t shot anything yet. Rethink this! Do you really want to remake Superman II, or copy off Smallville’s ideas? Rethink the villain. It doesn’t even take any significant imagination. There are so many villains to choose from. Read a freaking comic.

it could be worse,it could of been lex luthor again.

like the rest of you,i would love to see the likes of brainiac,doomsday or darkseid.

but maybe they'll turn up for one of the sequels.

looool really don't get why people are having a go at snyder he's not the one who wrote the script, he aint the one who came up with this new take it was Nolan so go blame him. Snyder Can't write a decent script Sucker punch proved that but you hand him one he'll adapt it page for page so blame the people behind the script goyer and nolan.

Don't worry, Zod has appeared in a lot of comics and storylines since Superman II. I'm sure it will be a different take on the character. Besides there could be more villains in this movie. There probably will be more villains. Also, it's silly to immeadiatly think this will be a remake of Supes 2. It's only a villain choice. There were other things that made Superman II Superman II besides Zod. Besides, Snyder has said that this movie will be as if no other Sperman movies have come before it.

@Breasticles7 & Hellsing: You guys are right. He didn't write the script although he does have control over the direction. Villain choices are something he has involvment with.

I agree with marvel72...maybe they're just using zod to set up for brainiac in a sequel. i just don't see zod bein the only villian in the movie though. pretty much every superhero film now has multiple villians.

um...Zod is an important character in the Superman mythos. Why is it so crazy that they would use him? I guess you complained that they used the Joker in TDK, right? I mean, he's been used before, right? At least Zod has a meaningful connection with Superman's home world and father. It would add a certain emotional touch that would make the conflict even more meaningful.

And how can you say its a remake? Again, was TDK a remake of the 1989 Batman solely based on the idea that they both had the Joker in them? This is a completely ridiculous argument from someone that can't think things through logically.

also, learn to place blame where it deserves to be placed. Like others said, this was written by Nolan and Goyer, not Snyder...

@Darkmatter- I agree with you. WB has no fu*king clue what villains Superman has. It really is a slap in the face...especially after the travesty that was "Superman Returns" -_-

@CorndogBurglar- I also agree with you about Zod...he does have a very meaningful connection with Supes. That could play out interestingly.

I agree with both of you gentlemen. Now let's wait and see how the film turns out. Still a chance they could add another villain alongside Zod to terrorize Superman. But IF Zod really is the only villain in the film, then that is just plain old weak-sauce by WB and would also imply to me that they truly don't know a god damn thing about Superman or his unique rogues gallery.

Brainiac= Intellect + power + hunger for infinite knowledge.

Darkseid= Intellect + power + he's a GOD with loyal disciples.

Metallo= Kryptonite + power + military trained

Any one of these guys could work well alongside Zod. Darkseid i know is a bit massive...maybe save him for JLA. But Brainiac or Metallo could certainly work well with Zod.

hey Tenaciousbt. Write a detailed article illustrating your points and use osme grammar then i'll take your opinion into thought. I do think Zod is a logcal choice ofr a villain becaus they can set up quite a bit for his backstory in future movies. then have brainiac in another film and Metallo in another. save Darkseid for JLA please

This is ridiculous. Two things, Zod is a great character and important to the Superman mythos as Corndog said. Secondly its not Snyders fault its that stupid guy who only made the greatest CBM ever and showed Hollywood how to reboot a franchise. Yeah and this movies gonna fail -_-
We haven seen anything yet so reserve your judgement until then. Plus, Batman Begins had three villains:
Ra's Al Ghul=General Zod
Scarecrow=Brainiac
Falcone=Lex Luthor
It CAN work!
I trust Nolan, Goyer and Snyder and YOU should too!

@ darkmatter

"You mean to tell me within Superman's lengthy rogues gallery ZOD is the best chocie to be the protaganist?"

Easy, man. I never said anything even remotely close to that. I never said Zod was the absolute best choice. Only that I can understand why they would use him. I admit, I would personally like to see Brainiac, as he also has ties to Krypton, and there would also be that level of emotion when dealing with him as a villain.

Don't mistake what I'm saying, or twist it to mean something else. All I'm saying is that Zod is an important Superman villain, way more important than Solomon Grundy, Metallo, Parasite, or even Bizarro. He's a good villain, and I can understand why they would use him. Thats all.

Doent he realise that if this flops I dont think anybody else will want to bother with superman for a very long time just because if he screwed it up everybody else might screw it up after him,and the best way to keep it a new and fresh superman was to not copy of anything,Ive seen to much zod already in smallville now where going to get another movie with him in...great...

:'(

can't believe the comments. there's been one villain announced, and we have no idea in what capacity - it could be mere flashback or he could be in addition to other villains

also zod is a classic superman villain! he has to be used at some stage, if he'd been left out here and used in a sequel, i can already see the fanboys crying out that he shouldn't be used in that either!

i would love another unused villain to be used in this film, but i'm more than happy with zod - an equal to superman. cries of "FFS IT'S A REMAKE!!!!" are ridiculous

I new this was gonna happen. If Superman is awesome they will give Nolan the credit and if it blows Snyder takes all the blame. Snyder didn't even write the script. The script was written by Goyer and from a story by Nolan. All the Nolan fanboys can blame Nolan if the story sucks.

to be fair to nolan/goyer, i think they've proved their worth with batman, it's not like McG or akiva goldsman wrote the script. then i'd be worried

@LP4: Wait and see? how dare you not make a judgement before seeing anything from this?

But seriously you're completely right, too many people here are impatient and should wait before making judgement.

Also, like many others have said it IS NOT A REMAKE JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE USING ZOD. This is Snyder/Goyer/Nolan Zod not Donner Zod. Just as Ledger was Nolan Joker not Burton Joker and Eckhart was Nolan Two-Face not Schumacher Two-Face. Think of all the different takes on the characters that come with each comic book writer, look at it like that and stop [female dog]ing all the time!

"WE MUST TRUST NOLAN AND GOYER WITH THE SCRIPT"---i think why Zod is used is because his character can be structured the same way as Liam Neeson...like Ras al ghul in batman begins...like a mentor.

i honestly had a huge feeling that Zod will be in this, yeah i wanted Brainiac but it's still better than Luthor! Metallo wouldn't work because of the over-use of Kryptonite!
Also have it ever occurred that at the end of this Film will be a "set up" for Brainiac like what was done in Batman Begins with the joker card!!!

I APPROVE OF ZOD!!!

I APPROVE OF ZOD!!

I can see why WB would want to go with a tried and true villain. I mean seriously, why take a risk when you can go with something that you know is going to work? We fans don't need anything fresh and new. We love re-hashing the same old stories over and over and over and over and over.......

Ok, all sarcasm aside, having Zod will likely be just fine. After all, he is a fellow Kryptonian and there is likely going to be a serious throw-down between Superman and Zod in this movie. However, it would be refreshing to see a villain that we've never seen on film before (or at least one that hasn't been butchered by Smallville) I would have preferred to see Brainiac, but I will simply go on living and reserve judgement until after I've seen the movie.

Andyboy - 4/11/2011, 7:45 AM
gonna be a bit controversial here - zod wasn't that great in superman 2 :O

like, he was fun, a bit camp, had a classic line but he pretty much just stood there watching the action unfold, save for a few moments.

so this new zod could be a lot darker, full of menace and a whole different take on the character

a bit like ledger's joker compared to jack's

@Frogman- Hahaha I know what you mean dude. Yeah I'm kinda let down too that it's Zod but I figure...eh...I'll just wait and see how it pans out. Maybe they will update Zod and make him more threatening than before.

Should be interesting. I honestly can say though...I LOVE Lex Luthor. If they can add him into the film as sort of a side threat who aids Zod, then I really wouldn't mind a Zod/Lex teamup for the movie. But they need to bring in a more serious version of Lex, not the campy real-estate version.

@Weedbeater You are funny! Oh, and I wrote this in an article from November of last year.

"Superman Trilogy Down and Dirty"

If they make this. Everyone will be happy and the studio will make a ton of money.

The Darkseid story line is perfect because it provides the kind of conflict that puts Superman in real jeopardy. We need to see that Superman is mortal, and that he needs to find the boundaries of his powers. He’s been raised in a world where he has constantly held back his true power for fear of hurting others, but now he will have to break through that mental barrier to win. Can he do it?

This movie is perfect because it takes Superman to a place he has never been in Cinema; off world. (Yeah I know he flies in space and on the moon and went home in Returns but that’s not what I mean). The whole first movie should almost entirely take place off world on Apocalypse and New Genesis; with Superman battling in a far away land to keep Earth safe (a lot like our men and women in the military). This will provide a great opportunity to change the uniform some. While away fighting his uniform can get all torn to shreds (everything but the Symbol itself). And throughout the movie he will be forced to “improvise some changes.” This will be the rough proto type of his new uniform. Then in the second movie he returns to Earth and BAM, Doomsday, and also bam a brand new costume. Nothing too different but cool, and a little different! Third movie would revolve around Brainiac. Boom there’s your trilogy, down and dirty.

Let me explain something to everyone here that is under the false assumption that a director doesn’t have creative control of a script. Directors have full control over every aspect of a film.
Now, I know he didn’t write the script, but directors don’t just come in and call “Action” and “Cut.” Directors get final say on everything, 99.9% of the time. Just look at how things went down before “Superman Returns” was made. There were many scripts and directors before Bryan Singer. Kevin Smith had a script until Richard Burton came in and got rid of Kevin and his script in favor of his own, then that was axed. My point? While Zack Snyder didn’t write the script he sure as hell could have come in a said, “I want to change the villain.” If he was not given that option then he was not given the full authority that 99.9% of all directors get, and in my opinion should not have accepted the gig. I don’t think that’s what happened though. I believe that he came in and loved the script, and that is why I blame him. He obviously wants Zod. The “Antagonist” (an adjective describing the villain, for “Darkmatter”) is clearly centrally critical the success of any film. Zod by himself isn’t a bad choice but displays a lack of creativity. There were many other antagonists to choose from that would provide all the ingredients that Zod provides and without this whole “remake” BS.

I guess by that same rational, Nolan didn't have any fresh ideas for TDK either. I mean, it did REUSE the Joker after all.

This article is a FAIL!

General Ross was done twice, the 2nd time it was MUCH better.

Give it a shot. Zod MAY not be the only villain, and this take may be fine. Before we start [female dog]in -arbitrarily - let's at least SEE the film and direction of Zod.

Zod is obviously a brilliant choice. An opponent Superman can smash and be smashed by! Why it is it a bad choice?! All of the villain relating to batman, superman etc have been used somewhere along the line...how does that mean it will end up a carbon copy of a previous movie/tv show?! No one here has even read the script!

Typical article written by a typical BELLEND! and that goes to all of the people who agree with this utter shite!

PEOPLE, stop complaining about Zod being cast. We don't know how he's going to be used in the movie. I've been saying a Zod/Brainiac movie would be awesome, so maybe we can get that. BUt we have not seen the script. THis is a NEW movie. NEW take on Zod. NEW take on everything.

People complain about nearly ever cast made in a movie, and then a week or two later they're all "can't wait for this!!! THey'll be awesome in the movie" Until we get more info about this....CHILL...
