THE FLASH's Disastrous Second Weekend In Theaters Was VERY Good News For SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

The Flash may have been a Morbius-sized disaster this past weekend, but bad news for that movie proved to be very good for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse...and even Pixar's Elemental. Check it out!

Two superhero movies were released in June, but the one hailed as "the greatest superhero [movie] ever made" has not lived up to that description at the box office.

As we first reported on Toonado.com, The Flash suffered a 73% decline which is the worst second-weekend drop for a superhero movie behind only Morbius, meaning it made a mere $15.3 million this past weekend. It's important to note this is a considerably worse drop than both Black Adam (-59%) and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (-69%), both of which lost Warner Bros. money when all was said and done.

However, bad news for The Flash was very good news for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The animated sequel received an unexpected boost this weekend, earning a spectacular $19.3 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. A movie returning to the top spot this late into its theatrical run is unheard of, and Across the Spider-Verse has now made $316 million in North America and $560 million worldwide.

The web-slinger faced stiff competition from Pixar's Elemental as that was in second place with a solid $18.5 million. While the movie has underperformed both critically and commercially, it's so far earned $65 million domestically and $121 million globally.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is definitely exceeding expectations and the movie has now earned considerably more than its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (which grossed $384.3 million back in 2018).

The sequel will likely finish its run with $675 million - $700 million, a great result that, while not quite up there with Spider-Man: No Way Home's $1.9 billion haul, is an amazing potential finish that bodes well for next year's Beyond the Spider-Verse...assuming it ends up swinging into theaters in 2024. Right now, it looks unlikely

"A contender for the best Spider-Man film yet and easily the greatest animated movie ever made," we said in our review"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a jaw-dropping spectacle, a feast for the senses, and an instant Marvel classic."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.

@DrReedRichards - Technically, the Flash is still $90 million ahead of Elemntal in WW BO. But yeah, no way it catches Ant Man 3.

Now if it earns less than Black Adam, which is very likely will, that will be pathetic.

@mountainman -

As laughably unwatchable as Black Adam might have been, it's another DC entry that was made with the promise of an imminent return to their precious SnyderVerse, which is why I didn't mention it as a target to be surpassed.

That said, you're right. It probably won't even make as much either, which is just pathetic.

@DrReedRichards - Hopefully the DCU can right the ship. DC deserves better than the last 10 years of way more misses than hits.

DC needs to rid themselves of the toxic crowd.

WB used them to promote their streamer. Dwayne used them to promote his ego. Gunn needs to slap some sense into them and let it be known, to them and to all, that they no longer matter. That they never mattered to begin with.

Burn what they believe in, and let it be remembered only as the most negative of examples. Ridicule, and nothing but.

Until that happens, DC on screen will remain synonymous of embarassmant.

@DrReedRichards - A lot of that comes down to committing to the new direction. They’ve been so middle of the road with holding on to vs moving in from the Snyderverse.

Post Aquaman 2, they just need to cut ties. A hard reboot would have been preferable, but hopefully they don’t carry over too much baggage. No Momoa. No Gadot. I wish they had none of the Suicide Squad / Peacemaker actors coming over. You cut out the old to start something fresh.

@mountainman -

Respectfully, they should have cut ties already. When Ezra's problematic behaviour first made news, they had plenty of time to recast. Later, when new management of Gunn & Safran was announcd, they had plenty of time to cancel Aquaman 2 entirely.

They could and should have changed their course a long time now. There's literally no excuse.

@DrReedRichards - Agreed. The changes should have happened years ago. A safe place would have been the Justice League debacle.

But they tried a soft pivot that failed. The only successful movies since then were Aquaman and two non-connected movies - The Batman and Joker.

Everything else since then has been an abject failure.

That being said, we are where we are now. Can’t go back. This new pivot seems stronger than the previous ones, but Id personally prefer to see a 100% reboot. This is a gamble for them. I guess we need to wait for the new Superman to see if it pays off.

IDGAF, but I'll say it again. Black Adam was a better movie than Flash ended up being, and Black Adam was still mediocre.

@bobevanz - don't disagree, but it was consistently generic. Flash was up down left, and right all over the place. It was a mess. Budget vs box office, its also looking like it will come out ontop.

Just my opinion though.

It almost certainly won't even make $300 million ww on a "$220 million dollar budget" (the budget is assumed to have been well over $300 million with all the rewrites and reshoots.)

Even if we're to take WB's bullshit $220 million number as a fact, The Flash would have to earn at least $550 million just to break even. ($220 mil x 2.5.)

When all is said and done, it's quite possible that this movie alone will lose WB over $200 million dollars.
