Thor 2: Who will the villain be?

We know the God of Thunder will be back. But who will he be facing off against? Check out several possible schemes here!

With Thor 2 on the docket, its now up to the screenwriters to decide who will be butting heads with the Mighty Avenger. That doesn't mean us nerds can't take a crack at it first. Here, the Schemer provides, for your enjoyment or lack thereof, several options the Marvel folks have in the way of villainy for Thor 2.

As I do not believe they will try to have Thor deal with two primary foes (one in Asgard and one on Midgard), there are really two directions to go. The first is the villains and creatures of the Nine Realms, the second is to select a villain of Earth. And of course it is possible that both Asgard and Earth will be involved. So first, the villains of Earth!

#1) The Grey Gargoyle: A French chemist who, thanks to an experiment gone wrong, can turn himself into living stone and trap others in a stony state for hours. He has battled against nearly every Marvel super hero, including Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor.

#2) The Wrecking Crew: I'll be honest, I'm not too keen on seeing a group of construction workers gone wrong, and it would capture the cheesy prize of 2013. Sure they get their powers from an Asgardian, but its courtesy of an enchanted crowbar...

#3) Absorbing Man: Loki turns Crusher Creel into a superhuman who can turn his body into anything he touches. Although it may make for a fun battle, Creel doesn't quite strike me as the 'main villain' type. Maybe as part of a Loki-recruited gang of villains though...

#4) Mr. Hyde: Once a doctor/swindler who robbed every medical establishment he worked for, he was not hired by Donald Blake and for revenge, he turned himself into Mr. Hyde. This could make for an interesting storyline. An interaction between Thor's alter ego in the film and Hyde, leading up to Hyde's transformation, with or without Loki being involved.

Now the Asgardian threats...

#1) Enchantress: Probably the favorite at this point, a love interest and villain for Thor. Of course there is the challenge of making a female villain who can be taken seriously. She and Skurge could be a dangerous duo.

#2) Ego, the Living Planet: While not from Asgard, an adapted version of Ego could make for some stunning visuals. Do we need the trademark beard? Maybe not, but Thor battling a planet, with or without his friends, complete with a journey across Ego, could be epic.

#3) Those Who Sit Above in Shadow: Mentioned on the tablet in Odin's vault in Thor, they are not villains per se, but Loki gets involved, and when he gets involved you don't know what could happen. They are more powerful than the Asgardians, and gain their power through the constant cycle of Ragnarok, which Thor isn't too happy about.

#4) Surtur: With the Eternal Flame in Odin's Vault, the lead-in is there, and Surtur could be fun to see on the big screen as another of the Asgardian worlds are opened, then again, he may look too much like a Balrog, and the plot may be too similar to the Frost Giants.

#5) Ymir: A continuation of the Frost Giant story could lead to Ymir, the Jotun 'all father' essentially.

#6) Malekith the Accursed: One of the Dark Elves who gets ahold of the Casket of Ancient Winters. He works with Loki and Surtur and is a master of magic.

Of course Loki's return complicates things and he can always be the puppeteer in any of these plots. Who would you like to see on the big screen opposite Thor?

It should be enchantress and the executioner sort of like how in the cartoon

Wrecking crew updated, and have Enchantress give them their powers.

Oh, a side story being that Odin has to battle Ymir because Loki almost destroyed their world. Jane Foster shouldn't appear. Have it be a fight across the 9 worlds.

Most likely the villains will be Enchantress and the Executioner. Obviously Enchantress will have an obsession for Thor; just put Jane Foster in the equation, and there a villanous motive and plot.

As for Earth villain(s); the Enchantress can use Wrecker as a threat to take on Thor. Maybe later on in the movie when Wrecker is jailed, he could assemble a group of criminals to become the Wrecking Crew to take on Thor at the same time.

With these additional characters, Avengers 2 can work out the Master of Evil story.

@BigK:

Regarding Masters of Evil, that's what I was thinking too. Then you can bring back Loki in Avengers 2 to round them all up with Enchantress, Executioner, Abomination, and maybe Zemo or Zola. Depending on Iron Man and Cap sequels and Black Panther and Ant-Man movies, you could also get Mandarin, MODOK, Klaw or Ultron too.

surtur & hela maybe enchantress as well.

If they do Enchantress and Skurge for #2, I think it would be cool to see a Ragnarok movie for #3 with no Jane. Surtur's arrival would start things up, and Thor finds out that Those Who Sit Above in shadow are not what they are cracked up to be. You can throw in Fenris and Ymir and some other beasts. Ending scene is a battle of 5 armies like scene, but Thor (Loki too maybe) overcome Those Who Sit Above and then put an end to the Ragnarok threat.

Surtur and/or Enchantress.

My top 3:

1) Surtur

2) Surtur

3) Surtur

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing any other villain (Malekith, Enchantress, etc) be the main enemy in Thor 2 but just set up the big evil (Surtur, duh) for #3 sort of like how the used Saruman to set up Sauron in the LotR trilogy.

I really liked the portrayal of Malekith in the Avengers show, which is actually the only reason I knew of the Casket before the Thor movie. If he's used with Kurse, it could be fun. Heck the more I post all the 'this could be fun' the more I'm excited that there are so many ways the sequel could be great. Even the enchantress/wrecking crew idea could be good, but like Sturm said, it should set up an epic third film (and I hate using 'epic' unless it really fits the situation)

I really agree with comiccow with having a fight across the nine realms, but that'd be to big. Not to mention it would be hard to balance the time between Earth & Asgard. But I think Enchantress/Executioner is a necessity.

That would be nice to see that in The Avengers 2; after all, Avengers have to be topped with something more spectacular than just aliens.

I don't thonk it should be Loki again and I also think it should be a fairly "heavy hitter"

Surtur would be good - or maybe he is too "uber"

One thing I'd like Marvel to do, albeit not as a primary goal, is to take up as much space, if you will, in the realm of Marvel movies, so that FOX, Sony, etc. don't have room to operate as well. Now certainly, those studios have the rights to the respective villains and such (Galactus, Doom, etc), but if you use up plots that bump up against other characters then they have less to work with.

Its not that big a deal, the mention of Beta Ray Bill made me think about it.

The Grey Gargoyle? That'll sell.

Jane Foster (although probably not Portman, I suspect) will probably be back for the second flick. They kind of teased that Sif really digs on Thor in the first movie, so the introduction of Enchantress, who also digs on Thor, makes three love interests. That's difficult to pull off, and could result in a crap script if the writers aren't careful.

Villains: Enchantress, Executioner, with a big knock-down, dragout fight on Midgard with my big fave, Simonson's Jormungand, a la the epic Thor 380, that leads into Thor 3 and a huge epic battle, a la Return of the King, against Surtur in Asgard.

A lot of Thor 2 would be how The AVENGERS is played out. Seeing that Loki is behind it, who or what he does in that movie will have to be answered. Grey Gargoyle? Not sellable. Enchantress/Executioner brings an interesting dynamic. A magic crowbar? Wrecking Crew? Maybe, if wrote correctly. A twist done by Loki, manipulating from afar.
Surtur/Ymir? Surtur would bring the rest of the fire demons that destroyed Beta Ray Bill's planet. Seeing a planet get "burned" by the sword of Surtur would be an interesting sfx. That would then introduce BRB into the Marvel universe. Ymir would have something to do with the Casket also. So many choices! There is also some love wrote into the comics with Sif and BRB. I hope that the young man that is writing Thor 2 also reads the comics! If he needs some "help" he should ask the writers of the comics or even its readers.

@captbeta. Totally agree. Until I wrote this out I totally didn't see how many ways it could go. I included Grey Gargoyle because he's been around, fought a few hero-types and has been in animated series and video games. He's probably my least favorite on here.

@Simonsenrules: Thanks dude. I like the epicness of the Serpent and Surtur.

@ Intruder - The Celestials are really a Marvel Universe level threat...maybe for something like Avengers 2 or 3?

But I dont see Thor taking on the Celestials on his own...youre right though it'd be epic!!!

Personally I think it would matter a LOT on how the Bifrost is approached wouldn't ya think? My hopes is that it would be rebuilt or what not.
But as personal favs and ideas that kind of would be more "seamless" in the Marvel Movie Universe would be something along the lines of the Enchantress (with the Executioner of course) and have Balder the Brave have an important role of some sort.
Hopefully there will be a LOT less story on Earth and more in Asgard and rest of the Nine Realms.
I firmly believe they handled Jotunheim perfectly.
Seeing Hel (with Hela of course)or Muspellheim with Surtur plotting Ragnarok against Odin would be sweet to see also. :-)
