Transformers 2 review from an FNG (Caution: Big Spoilers!!!)

Michael Bay hit one out of the ballpark. Too bad he's playing on a grade school field.

Review Opinion
By CBMcontributor - Jun 24, 2009 03:06 AM EST

This is my first time posting on this site, even though I've been reading the articles for years. It's 3:30 a.m. and I've just gotten home and settled in from the midnight premiere of Michael Bay's latest and greatest. My feelings were so strong that I felt it necessary to create an account and post my own personal review of this film. Here goes nothing...

Let's get right into it, shall we? I was expecting a traditional Bay film in which we get an amazing opening sequence with lots of fantastic action and a jump-start into the films' plot. Twenty minutes later, and I'm wondering what happened to the opening action sequence. I know that the whole Decepticon hunting unit idea was cool, but our first glimpse of NEST (as it's called in the film) was rather anti-climatic. We aren't really introduced to any of the new characters, and before it's over, two of them have died. Now, I know we don't need a bunch of character development at this stage, but a little introduction is at least warranted. I'd at least like to know WHO died without having to research it on the internet.

Once things get underway, we spend a little too much time getting familiar with old friends Sam and Mikela. (Although the virtual "upskirt" shot of Megan Fox left the auditorium cheering. Did I see a bit of cheek?) The scene is set, we know where most of the major players stand, and the film finally gets underway.
My first major grievance; Sam's new roomate is an assclown. 'Nuff said.
My next big issue was the "robot in disguise as a human" chick. When did the Decepticons get L.M.D.'s from Nick Fury? It was obvious from the moment we met her what she was, and it was annoying every second until she got crushed by Mikela's superb driving skills. Thank you, Bay, for one more unneccesary and agitating character.

Sam makes it to safety, the story continues to unfold, and it's about this time that I start to feel really unhappy about the progression of things, but I can't put my finger on why. Then it hits me in the face during the scene after Optimus bites the big one: they aren't giving us ANY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AT ALL!!! The other autobots barely even flinch when they find out that their great leader has died. They all seem to act, pardon the expression, like machines!!! The first film gave life and emotions to the Transformers, and when the movie was over, you really cared what happened to each of them. This time, I felt like I was watching robotic body parts being piled up and thrown in large, unmarked graves, just to move on to the next scene of robotic homicide.
I've decided to quickly list each robot that recieved a personality and the fault I've found, if there is any, with each one:

Optimus Prime: Killed before the halfway point in the film, so what is there to care about?

Megatron: Resurrected as Megatron, not Galvetron. Same character as in the first film, just serving a master instead of being the master.

Starscream: Lacked any ambition. Became a complete pee-on coward the second that Megatron was brought back.

The Fallen: The newest badass and major villain. Too bad we all know that he's going to get smoked before the film ends.

The Twins: Comic relief. Why the hell would I get emotionally attached to the court jesters?

Bumblebee: Same character in the first film, but more badass. (Unless you count the pouting and crying scenes.)

Jetfire: Old man robot with a surly attitude. The best of what little we were given.

Wheelie: Another comic relief. Funny, but not awe-inspiring.

The point is, the characters that were developed were piss-poor, and the ones that weren't could have used some more time in the spotlight. Ravage rocked. Why couldn't we get more of him, and get rid of Wheelie?

Also, I noticed that a few familiar faces were there, with ZERO explanation as to how they got there. For example, Blackout. How'd he come back? Also, I thought I saw Brawl during the desert battle at the end. And I know that I saw Bonecrusher in there. We're just left to accept that they were magically reincarnated so that they could be killed all over again. I call bullspit.

Now, on to one of my biggest issues; Devastator. It seemed like he was made up of several different smaller Decepticons, just like in the original series. But if you looked, you could see that none of the individual pieces of Devastator actually became a robot. They just became PARTS. And during the final battle scene, I distinctly saw three of Devastators' supposed individual parts battling with the Autobots and humans. How can they be in two places at once?
One last major issue was this; It seemed that most of the robots that did get face time were given teenager-like personalities. I don't know about all of you, but I had enough of teenage personalities before the movie started, seeing as my entire auditorium was full of them.

Other issues: Arcee, or the lack thereof. Soundwave, or the lack thereof. Not enough Ravage. Too many generic, no name, just another face in the crowd Decepticons. Teleporting with no explanations? WTF??? No worthwhile bonus footage during the credits.

Now, I'm not all gloom and doom. There were some things that really pleased me. The first was Ravage. They did an outstanding job at portraying the big robotic cat. Ravage had more personality and character with no spoken lines than most of the other characters in the entire film.

The inclusion of energon and the Matrix of Leadership were also familiar and welcome additions. Having Frank Welker voicing Decepticons again was heart-warming, (in a geeky, macho kind of way.) Shia Lebouf screaming like a little girl was priceless. And the twins were not as "Jar-Jar" as I had feared they would be.

All in all, I left the theater stunned and disappointed. I can truly say that, as a Michael Bay fan, he has earned his place amongst the great directors with their respective "masterpieces": George Lucas and Star Wars: the Prequels. Sam Raimi and Spider-Man 3. Joel Schumacher and Batman Forever/Batman and Robin.
OY.

Nice review, i agree mostly, in fact if anything, you were too lenient on Car Car Binks! They were not only unfunny, but jaw dropping racial stereotypes as well.

Like teabag would say, BAY GO BOOM!, and boy did he ever so i still enjoyed it for the most part.

errm..its transformers..why would you even put character development and transformers in the same sentence? You are paying to watch a bunch of robots destroy things.

MsKyle-your an idiot. Why bother with plot development? Or backstory? Or continuity problems? OH WAIT! I REMEMBER!!! HES GETTING PAID TO DIRECT!!! A DIRECTOR GIVES THE MOVIE DIRECTION!!! SOMETHING THIS MOVIE OBVIOUSLY LACKED AT TIMES!!! Batman is a man running around with no powers in a BAT suit. Literally. Nolan got me to take that seriously. Bay is an over-glorified, pompous ass. TAKE HIM OFF OF TF3. Honestly, McG did better with Salvation than Bay did with this.

Allow me to clarify a bit.
When I say character development, I'm looking for basic development, such as INTRODUCTIONS. We had an army of decepticons on screen, and we knew almost none of them. I knew a few from their toys, but the film didn't introduce us. Also, they left out one of the coolest things about Transformers; WHAT THEY TRANSFORM INTO!!!. I saw a handful of Decepticons beat the snot out of an aircraft carrier with plenty of interesting transformer possibilities, and not one of them actually took on an earthly "disguise".
I know that the story called for them to "reveal themselves to the humans", but it kind've defeats the purpose of Transformers, in my opinion.
"Robots in Disguise" anybody?
superdog
superdog - 6/24/2009, 11:53 AM
mskyle i would disagree. i believe rorshach 1st stated it and this article echoes it as well, its hard to care about the fighting if you dont care about the fighters. even if they are robots you still need to care what happens to them. you are right on this as to this point, it is a michael bay movie, so more than not expecting character development from robots, we should not expect it from bay.

ironknight27 - 6/24/2009, 11:54 AM
Having not seen the movie yet I can't really comment on it yet. Although, I know that there are supposed to be big frickin robots in the movie and we shouldn't expect oscar performances but there has to be some development. There has to be more in the movie than big explosions and gigantic fighting sequences. This is what I hated about the Matrix sequels. I hated that, to me, it seemed like they cared more about trying to amaze people with CGI than actually having a good story. With that said I hope that there is an interesting story within this movie.

Also, seeing another Bay film you know what to expect but you keep hoping for more. Almost like going to a bad strip joint.

They never said that those Decepticons were part of Devastator, we all just assumed because they were construction vehicles. Like the review says, Devastator's parts never turned into robots, so you can't really say they were in 2 places at once.

Unicron tuns Megatron into Galvatron... No Unicron, why would there be Galvatron...?

Alot of time in the first half of the movie was Prime, thats why it mattered that he died.

Sam's roomie was a tool, but the movie acknowledged that, and the characters, especially Sam, reacted to it.

Nice review, but it sounds like a lot of your grievances have to do with your own preconceptions. I'm definitely not saying that this movie is God's gift to celluloid, but it was a fitting follow-up to the first film...

Whoever the [frick] posted this review, I don't care enough to go look, you're an f'n moron. I realize the whole IMO situation and that you probably know and love Transformers at an incredible dork level, but I grew up with them, and played with them, and own the cartoon series and movies. As far as this day and age goes, what I saw last night, was one of the best pieces of film that I ever seen in my almost 30 years of life. The story line was fine....so what they didn't do a [frick]in' back story on a couple of random ass transformers, so what Sam's roommate was a tool, he was suppose to be, it brought more bits of comedy, which there were tons of bits. I gave this film an A++ and trust me people who read this post and these replies you will as well. Unless you're a nitpicker then this film was ridiculously amazing.

The character that looks like blackout is actually a Decepticon named Grindor. And They were in a desert so all thos decepticons had little to choose from so it's only natural some would transform into same vehicles as the others.

People need to understand when walking into the theaters to see this movie. There are some movies that are meant to be serious and some movies that are meant to just be enteratining and fun to watch. TDK is a movie about ficition but it is meant to be a serious film with serious situations. Transformers is meant be enteratining and fun. Kick back relax eat some popcorn and watch some good effects and action

well as you stated the cinema was full of teens as that is who the MASS audience are so you have to expect it to be a comedy with childish antics. you frickin fool what you thought bay was gona make the film for a bunch of saddo 40 year olds who probably still live with their mothers. the film cost 150 million to make obviously its going to be aimed at the masses and from where i was seated the masses loved it i think you need to lose your virginity then go out and get a life. thats the best reason ive seen so far for simular decepticons....

When Soundwave sent the "Boy Found" call all the remaining decepticons hiding on that rock/planet shot down to earth. A few you could tell was still in protoform/original form and it makes sense that others took on the look of the constructicons.

Im thinking also that maybe they had 2 sets of constructicons.. A few were missing that went to resurect megatron, and one got killed in the begining of the film, but he was present to make Devastator.

We all know that toys/cartoons make more than one version of the same vehicle (but different robot).

Starscream/ramjet/thundercracker/skywarp:
Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus:

They also had pretenders back in the day (stupid line of toys)...

Sideswipe and sunstreak

The movie had a lot of cool things in it and the fight scenes were awesome. But is it really too much to ask for a better story? I dont give a shit if sam doesnt love mikela, so stop telling me about it and dragging it out when i could see some badass robots. I was left wanting to know who some characters were and wanted see more of the more important robots. There was too much emphasis on robots that served no real purpose.

I was really upset with this movie. I love transformers, that is how everyone knows me, the transformers fanatic! I hated this movie. i was so disappointed. I've been looking forward to it for about a year, i bought my tickets over a month in advance in IMAX, and i just found this incredibly corny and predicable! I wanted to leave after the chick in the college turned into a decepticon. Why did bumblebee not notice he had a decepicon sitting in his passenger seat?!? He would have gone into a full out brawl with it!! He just accused Sam of cheating. Sam was pretty rude in this movie to "this isn't my battle" The bots only SAVED YOUR ASS in the first one, I think you owe them SOMETHING.
I expected Mikala to be this badass heroine in the story, not a love sick bimbo only there for the sex factor.
I was looking forward to Megatron coming back... but as Galvatron. That would have been badass

They didn't even introduce Ravage, no one knows who he is who isn't a fan of the cartoon and cartoon movie....

i'm just all sorts of irritated. and saddened. its like finding out there isn't a Santa all over again =[

AND they made a few blasphemous comments and actions... What's with the primes bringing him back to life? I don't entirely know if I believe in god myself, but i found it really disrespectful for those who do. We know that robot organisms pretty much are a reference for evolution, but they don't need to talk down other religious beliefs. the first movie didn't, the cartoon never did..

and the twins were stupid. I was soo excited for RC to be in this one... but the whole attitude of the movie was pretty sexist, the girl robots were not even HALF the size as the other autobots, they were even smaller then the twins!!!
