DC TV Producer Greg Berlanti Talks About Updating DC Comics' Classic Heroes For Today's World

With the Hollywood landscape changing in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests, Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti explains the importance of updating DC's characters so they represent today's world!

There's been a notable shift in how Hollywood approaches diversity since the death of George Floyd, with Gone with the Wind pulled from HBO Max before being put back with a warning message, The Flash star Hartley Sawyer fired from the series for racist comments, and several episodes of big TV shows like 30 Rock and Scrubs pulled from streaming services for using blackface.

In an interview with Variety, Arrowverse creator and DC TV executive producer Greg Berlanti talked about the "responsibility" he has when it comes to taking characters from the past and finding a way to bring them into the modern era where they can represent the world we live in today.

"In the DC Universe especially, there’s been a focus on us recognizing that we want to create heroes that look and felt like today, not the 1940s or 1950s, They were all very well intentioned when they created those back then, but there’s a certain responsibility that you have if you’re going to escort these iconic characters into this generation to make sure they have the heart of that character, but they don’t have to have the gender or the color of that character or the sexuality."

Looking across the shows Berlanti is in charge of, those changes are clear to see; black actress Candice Patton plays Iris West in The Flash, while a number of other characters have had their genders or ethnicities changed over the years. In Supergirl, there's even a transgender character played by trans actress Nicole Maines (Dreamer).

In future, Berlanti will also be overseeing Green Lantern for HBO Max, so his stance on diversity hopefully means John Stewart is finally given the chance to shine in a live-action setting.

Berlanti's series are the lowest quality of all TV series. No joy, no entertainment. It seems all he's interested in is hiring LGBTQs and turning DC characters into LGBTQs.

Sounds an awful lot like SJW talk.

Berlanti's talking about this like adding representation to these characters isn't a thing across all mediums of DC recently. Shit, regardless of quality, the movies have been pretty diverse so far too.

Well then, Greg, don't complain when your ratings fall, people bitch and you can't sell merchandise. People don't absolutely NEED what you have to sell; there are too many entertainment choices nowadays. It's just way too easy to just shut you off.

Offt. Man makes a point, an incredibly correct point, that the world has changed since these characters where created and that the characters need to change with it. You’d think that was pretty cut and dry but by ready comments so far I guess a lot of you guys are just... what? Morons? Sure some of you have tried to cover for it by mentioning the quality of the shows but that really has nothing to do with what’s said does it?

Does anyone trust Greg Berlanti on handling any DC properties?

Nothing wrong with diversity in comics or tv, just don't alter beloved, established characters to pander to the radical left twitter mob.

“So what you do is, you take your favourite superhero, and each episode, just when things should get really exciting, you stop. And you have them talk for ages about their feelings - you know - like an episode of Dawson’s Creek! The fans love it! They don’t want to see amazingly choreographed super sequences when then can watch emotional discussions instead. Because 💪🏻FEELINGS💪🏻”.

“And to stretch the season out even further, 2 or 3 eps before every mid-season and season finale, you have the hero out of town and you focus on the supporting characters having a Scooby Doo type mystery to solve or something, just to really [frick] up the momentum of the last few episodes. You see, then it’s not such a shock an episode or 2 later when the hero’s partner/family member lays down an epic whinge about how the hero is not giving them enough attention, just as they’re working out how to take down the unbeatable bad guy, so they get the crap beaten out of them and the partner/family member can be validated by then contributing their vast wisdom as to how the hero with the powers should be using them. Cos the fans love it when superheroes feel insecurity and guilt for prioritising the lives of millions of people over the needy dependency of their loved one. Because 💪🏻FEELINGS💪🏻”.

“The last piece of advice is to realise that while these superheroes’ powers are heat vision/flying/the ability to lift massive shit/running fast than the eye can see/unleashing bolts of electricity/ice/UV/shooting sharp objects into people/punching hard, what their real power is is taking down the bad guy by unleashing a poorly written “inspirational” speech about how there’s still good inside them and how their deceased loved one wouldn’t want them to be doing bad things. It’s gold! The psychopathic killers - and audiences - just can’t resist! And you know why? 💪🏻FEELINGS💪🏻”.

Nah, we don't need to make money and be profitable. My sense and sensibilities is what matters.

What a clown. If you're truly commited with diversity, you would create your own characters from the ground up instead of riding the coattails of a pre-established IP. This gender/race-swapping trend is the laziest thing you could do. Don't turn Hal Jordan black, just make a freaking movie starring John Stewart and no sane person would complain (only actual racists). Same thing with everything else. But what do I expect from modern Hollywood...

"but they don’t have to have the gender or the color of that character or the sexuality."

Well...they do. Especially if you want people to watch.

I agree with literally every word he said, and the intention behind it.

But then I remember what he did to Mr. Terrific, and I have to conclude there's just something wrong with this man.

"they don’t have to have the gender or the color of that character or the sexuality"

That depends. These things effect the lived experience of people. So it can naturally effect their character in certain ways.

Escorting these iconic characters into this generation means making their stories and personalities more "cheap", "soapy" and "cheesy"?

I never liked Berlanti vision of DC's intellectual properties and probably never will.
