RIVERDALE's Vanessa Morgan Rumored To Be In Contention To Replace Ruby Rose As BATWOMAN

Although this is very much just a rumor for now, a new report claims that Riverdale star Vanessa Morgan is one of the actresses in contention to replace Ruby Rose as the lead in The CW's Batwoman series.

We found out last month that Ruby Rose had parted ways with Batwoman, and will not be returning for the already renewed second season. We were told that The CW had already begun the search for another actress to suit-up as Gotham's Scarlet Knight - but they won't be playing Kate Kane!

Showrunner Caroline Dries recently confirmed that another character named Ryan Wilder (this may still be a placeholder) would inherit the cape and cowl, and Riverdale actress Vanessa Morgan is said to be in the running to suit-up as the new Batwoman.

According to The Cinema Spot, The CW is interested in Morgan for the role, and she's expected to screen test at some point. Of course, even if this is accurate, there's nothing to say she'll actually land the part.

Morgan made headlines over the weekend when she called out Riverdale for sidelining black characters by depicting them only as sidekicks.

You can check out a recent character breakdown for Ryan Wilder below.

"Likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."

What do you guys make of this rumor? Could you see Morgan suiting up as Batwoman? Let us know in the comments.

It makes sense that the decision to create a whole new character would be an indication that they might go a more diverse route.

What happened to moving on without Kate Kane? Also, she appears to be a different race to Ruby Rose. Is she?
Origame

@Nebula - where are you getting from this that they arent moving on without kate kane? In the description for the new character they flat out say shes nothing like kate kane.

@Origame - Oh yeah, I'm a dumb. I just read "Vanessa Morgan Rumored To Be In Contention To Replace Ruby Rose As BATWOMAN" and automatically thought Batwoman and Kate Kane were synonymous.
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 6:36 AM
@Nebula - its ok. Technically under normal circumstances they are but we're getting someone completely new

@Nebula - What a crazy idea that is. Keeping the identity of the main character the same. 😂
Sorry but this is just stupid. Replacing the actress and not the character is the way to go.

The post seems to imply Kate Kane dies in an earthquake off-screen, which... kind of defeats all that spiel of her being a super special paragon in Crisis
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 5:30 AM
@tmp3 - not really. Being a paragon only works for crisis, and we see why in crisis and it had nothing to do with skill or ability.

@tmp3 - What, paragons are immortal now?

She's 5 ft 3 and 80 pounds. At least... At freakin least... Ruby Rose was 5 ft 7 and looked intimidating.

But no, let's get My Babysitter's A Vampire. Smh lol

@KWilly - two shirts and jacket makes no sense
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 7:49 AM
@KWilly - this takes place in a world where a man can run fast enough to travel back in time, aliens are a regular part of society, you can travel to alternate dimensions, and we already had a woman taking on thugs twice her size. At what point does this specifically break your suspension of disbelief?
patgreyc
patgreyc - 6/9/2020, 8:09 AM
@Origame - She has NO powers. Physics at least apply when that is the case. Also, you must be new here, because we complain all the time when they do something that's complete non-sense even with powers.
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 8:15 AM
@patgreyc - do you realize these are people who can still fight alongside and against people with actual powers like flash and supergirl? And this has been a concept that a character like green arrow can physically fight the flash at least to some extent as recently as season 7. And batman and batwoman are clearly on a similar level to green arrow. Are you saying thats in the realm of real world physics?
patgreyc
patgreyc - 6/9/2020, 10:06 AM
@Origame - That was my point about us complaining about simple physics being an issue for the non-sense with and without powers. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. My favorite example being people shooting or knocking out the Flash when he moves in a straight line. With the speed he moves at, they shouldn't even have the response time to react, let alone get the drop on him.
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 10:11 AM
@patgreyc - so you think its within suspension of disbelief to break the time barrier on foot and for a non powered guy to fight that guy to a draw but not for an 80 lb woman to fight a 200 lb man?
Battabing
Battabing - 6/9/2020, 10:18 AM
@dragon316 - How so?
Battabing
Battabing - 6/9/2020, 10:18 AM
@patgreyc - Batman has NO powers, either.
patgreyc
patgreyc - 6/9/2020, 2:19 PM
@Battabing - Yeah, but Batman isn't a 5 foot nothing, 90 pounds soaking wet woman taking on guys a foot taller and at least 100 pounds heaver then him.
patgreyc
patgreyc - 6/9/2020, 2:21 PM
@Origame - I think its poor writing which the Arrowverse has in spades.
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 3:10 PM
@patgreyc - it sounds more like you just have a high standard for suspension of disbelief. Which is fine. Maybe superhero media isnt for you since people doing things they're not realistically supposed to is kind of the point (i mean this is based on a comic where our hero sends a prepubescent child into these same situations)
Battabing
Battabing - 6/9/2020, 4:19 PM
@patgreyc -
Clayface, Killer Croc, Bane, Superman, etc.

patgreyc
patgreyc - 6/9/2020, 5:10 PM
@Origame - Fair enough, but like I said above, it’s the sloppy writing that bothers me more then anything else.
Origame
Origame - 6/9/2020, 5:16 PM
@patgreyc - i mean thats fair but this really isnt an instance of it. Its very consistent with both the rest of the series and comics.

You know what would've been cool? If they had someone else like say a former batgirl who was already an established character with a fanbase, who also happened to be an ethnic minority like say CASSANDRA CAIN and then made her the new batwoman instead of making up someone new and hoping it sticks.

But I'm sure your way will work as well CW -_-

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Oh yeah, I forgot about Cain. In fact, you're right. They should've just done that.

You could still call her Batwoman, but you'd still be comic accurate. That's having your cake and eating it too.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 6/9/2020, 4:24 AM
@Superspecialawesomeguy - Would people complain if Cain were a lesbian or bi? (Assuming she isn’t already... I don’t know.)

After plugging the LGBTQ angle of the character, I think that they’re understandably hesitant to remove it from the show for fear of backlash.
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 6/9/2020, 4:34 AM
@Chewtoy - As far as I can tell Cassandra Cain is straight, so they might be some pushback about that but seeing as she would end up being played an asian actress, hopefully that would balance it out lol.
