It's been a long time coming, but Black Lightning is nearly here and earlier tonight, The CW released a pretty sweet new trailer for the series, giving us a preview of the superhero action to come this January.

The series will debut after the midseason premiere of The Flash on January 16 and is expected to have a 13-episode freshman season. There's no word yet on whether or not we'll ever see Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) traverse the Multiverse to link up with the rest of Greg Berlanti's colorful band of heroes, but considering they found a way for Supergirl to make her way to Earth-1, it's not a stretch to assume they'll eventually find a way to bring Black Lightning over for a visit as well.

Watch the new trailer below:

Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line, and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his Super Hero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

Black Lightning features:
Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning
China Anne McClain as Jennifer Pierce
Nafessa Williams as Anissa Pierce
Christine Adams as Lynn Pierce
James Remar as Peter Gambi
Damon Gupton as Henderson

Black Lightning premieres January 16

My god he looks like a dork. Like a lazer tagger decided to become a superhero.

And the trailer is full of your standard superhero cliches, which i’m getting tired of even in the netflix shows or big budget flicks.

If I hear anything like the phrase ‘this city needs you/me’ once more...

Wait just a minute... I'm 90% sure they reused the set for Barry's lab at the CCPD.

Can anyone tell me why he’s called black lightning? He shoots really colourful lightning. Is it just because he’s a black guy?

@connorblaze - So you know he's black, just like Black Panther. It's not enough to know that panther's are generally black, they must also put the word "black" in the name to really drive it home.

"In the late-1960s and throughout the 1970s, several African-American heroes were created in the vein of Blaxploitation-era movie protagonists, and seemed to be a direct response to the notable Black Nationalist movement. These predominantly male heroes were often martial artists, came from the ghetto, and were politically motivated. Examples of such Blaxploitation characters include Luke Cage, Bronze Tiger, Black Lightning, and the female detective Misty Knight. The Falcon stars in one infamous story arc in the Captain America series, in which he is portrayed as a street hustler before being "rescued" by Captain America."

I only learned a few years ago that the girl is Victoria Principle, most notably from
the TV show "Dallas".
