Frank Grillo Talks The Adult Tone Of CREATURE COMMANDOS; Takes Another Shot At Marvel Regarding Crossbones

Frank Grillo hasn't been shy about sharing his feelings on how the Crossbones story played out in the MCU, but he's now fully committed to his new DCU character, Rick Flag Sr.

Frank Grillo was recently promoting his latest action thriller, Lights Out, which hit theaters on February 16, 2024 when an interview with Moviefone quickly turned to
Grillo's upcoming appearance as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated DCU series Creature Commandos, which will be released later this year.

Speaking to Moviefone, Grillo disclosed whether he's finished recording all of his lines. " I love James Gunn and Peter Safran and what they're doing at DC and for the DCU, and these characters are living in all their movies. I'm going to be around for a while, and I wish I could tell you what I have coming up with them, but I can't."

"But it's exciting. I was just with the RussoBrothers, Kevin Feige and Lou D'Esposito and it's kind of like, “I miss those guys, but you blew it.” Now we're going over here."

Grillo has made some negative remarks about Marvel in the past, as he is obviously upset with how Crossbones' storyline played out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Crossbones is infamous for assassinating Captain America in the comics and it's evident that Grillo wanted something similar to occur in the MCU.

In the interview with Moviefone, Grillo also stated that Flag Sr. will appear in future live-action DCU productions, although he couldn't reveal which ones. However, he did confirm that Flag will not feature in Superman: Legacy.

In a separate but similar interview with ScreenRant, Grillo described Creature Commandos as a "hard R" show.

Said Grillo, "..I think because this is a hard R — Creature Commandos is a hard R — it's fun. When we were doing it, I think one day it was me and David Harbour recording, I was on the ground. I had to stop in the recording studio, I had to go on the ground and laugh, that's how funny and filthy it is. [Laughs] It's amazing, I'm so happy to be a part of it. I think that is what's different is this guy's the boss, and he's grizzled, white on the sides, and white in the beard, and I'm leaning into all that."

Gunn announced that Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Veneberg in The Witcher, will play Circe, the Wonder Woman villain, in Creature Commandos. The confirmation came after months of fan speculation

Creature Commandos has fought off delay rumors for months, with Gunn recently confirming a late-2024 release window for the Max series [via Threads].  If we had to make a logical guess, it would make sense for Creature Commandos to drop around Halloween.

The 7-episode animated series will stream on Max and stars Harbour as Eric Frankenstein/Frankenstein's Monster, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Dr. Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Steve Agee will also reprise his Peacemaker role of John Economos.  Viola Davis is also slated to appear as Amanda Waller.

More recently Gunn has revealed that he views Indira Varma's The Bride as the main character of the series. He also shared that he's not directing any episodes but he did direct each actor's recording sessions.

Agreed, no one cared about the origin of Crossbones, we just wanted to see Crossbones, and when we finally got Crossbones, they killed him off immediately.

@soberchimera -

The actor is in service of the character. The character isn't at service to the actor.

Crossbones served his purpose 💁

@AmazingFILMporg - that's exactly how I felt. I thought he did great as crossbones and I thought Russo brothers did great with crossbones. Served his purpose. It's called captain america. Not Crossbones!

@AmazingFILMporg - The issue isn't about Grillo's interpretation of the character, the issue is that that we got so little of the character.

Imagine being mad you were in the biggest film franchise of all time and then being cast in a obscure streaming animation show talking shit that you didn't have a bigger role in the biggest franchise of all time.

And also imagine talking shit about a universe that will reboot in a few years and burning the bridge with the creatives of that said universe essentially eliminating yourself from coming back as a different bigger character or the same character with a bigger role.

This guy is a moron🤡

He isn't the greatest actor, but he is solid in his action movies.
He isn't wrong about Crossbones killed off too early, though.
That is a mcu problem.

The impression I get from actors is that, Marvel sell them on the characters based on important roles they’ve played in comics, which isn’t what they are going to be in the films. Also helps explain why actors are cautious to sign multi picture deals because at the end of the day they have no idea what they are signing up for. Not even just Marvel, just look at the new Star Wars movies, Mark Hamill signed up just to not even be in the first film, then have to play a version of the character he didn’t want to in the second

@Twenty23Three - No, actors are cautious to sign multi-film deals because they're hesitant to make that long of a commitment. Has nothing to do with hesitance over how the character might be used. You sign a multi-film deal then you have some control over the direction of your character. You're not signing a blind loyalty contract. It's Hamill's fault for signing up without even getting a look at the script.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 2/18/2024, 4:48 PM
@GeneralChaos - there are no scripts. They change it constantly. Hamill signed up to come back to Star Wars before Force Awakens even had a script, nevermind TLJ which was written after that.
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 2/18/2024, 5:45 PM
@Twenty23Three - Yeah that's what I said - Hamill signed up without a script. That's his fault.

With Marvel, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, to name a few, have all had input into the direction of their characters.

I feel like an alternate timeline where Project Insight succeeded would be a good universe to explore. With Hydra create an Anti-Avengers team called "The Hounds" who specifically hunt down any enhanced individuals. The Hounds consist of The Winter Soldier, Arnim Zola, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and the team leader being Crossbones. And in this timeline, a young Peter Parker and street level heroes are rising to fight back. With the help of The Ancient One and The Hulk.

CROSSBONES is/was an uninteresting character and was used appropriatly.

@JobinJ - in my opinion Rumlow was more interesting as an agent than as Crossbones.

It seems like he is stating that jokingly and I don’t think he seems to have any genuine bad blood towards Marvel now considering he’s come back for What If a few times…

Anyway , looking forward to this!!.

His words were taken out of context. They could have done more with his storyline. He’s a good actor, it is marvels loss. He even said there’s no bad blood between him and Marvel. It sounds like he will be treated better at DC. He’s never afraid to speak his mind/stand up for himself which is why I love him.

Frankie, we get it. You're still salty you didn't get a Crossbones solo movie which I'm sure would have hit the billion dollar mark like some of your other massive box office hauls, but you gotta let it go.
