Prepare for the first look at Creature Commandos, the DCU's first original project, which will debut next month.

Next month's Annecy Film Festival will include a new look at the series, according to recent confirmation from WB Animation.

Annecy is a prominent event that usually happens at the start of June every year in Annecy, France.

Established in 1960, this animation festival is among the most esteemed and long-standing in the world. The wide selection of films it offers pays tribute to all things animation-related, including television series, shorts, and project that use a wide range of animation techniques, such as stop-motion, 3D, and conventional 2D animation.

Along with the announcement, WB Animation has provided an updated logo for the series.

The full description for the panel reads, "From executive producer and writer James Gunn, Creature Commandos is the upcoming Max Original animated event series, based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation which follows Amanda Waller as she forms a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners. Prepare for an in-depth look from Rick Morales (supervising producer) and Balak Yves (supervising director) into the artistry and creative processes behind this highly anticipated series kicking off a new era of storytelling in the DC Universe."

Creature Commandos has fought off delay rumors for several months, with Gunn recently confirming a fall  2024 release window for the Max series [via Threads].  If we had to make a logical guess, it would make sense for Creature Commandos to drop around Halloween.

The 7-episode animated series will stream on Max and stars Harbour as Eric Frankenstein/Frankenstein's Monster, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Dr. Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as Weasel and G.I. Robot, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

Actress Anya Chalotra who plays Yennefer of Veneberg in Netflix's The Witcher, has also been confirmed by Gunn to have a role in the series as the Wonder Woman villain, Circe.

Steve Agee will also reprise his Peacemaker role of John Economos.  Viola Davis is also slated to appear as Amanda Waller.

More recently Gunn has revealed that he views Indira Varma's The Bride as the main character of the series. He also shared that he's not directing any episodes but he did direct each actor's recording sessions.

Grillo also teased that the series is very adult. "..I think because this is a hard R — Creature Commandos is a hard R — it's fun. When we were doing it, I think one day it was me and David Harbour recording, I was on the ground. I had to stop in the recording studio, I had to go on the ground and laugh, that's how funny and filthy it is."

"[Laughs] It's amazing, I'm so happy to be a part of it. I think that is what's different is this guy's the boss, and he's grizzled, white on the sides, and white in the beard, and I'm leaning into all that."

Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. was also just confirmed to appear in Peacemaker season 2, making him the first new DCU character (Viola Davis' Waller is a DCEU holdover) to move fluidly between animation and live-action, something that Gunn stated would be a goal of this new era of DC Comics films and television projects.

@Izaizaiza - Same. That said, I'll probably watch it. It'll be an interesting bellwether for what's to come.

@Izaizaiza - I’m curious to see how it will all tie into the live action movies.

If it were live action I'd probably give half a sh1t about this.

I’m excited for something different. I think it was smart to release an obscure cartoon alongside a live action Superman movie for the new universe. One of them is bound to appeal to someone.

ight Gunn let’s see what you cooking.

That Superman reveal flopped like most things involving that character but this sounds promising.

@YouFlopped - oh this explains your lack of understanding when something flops.

You don't know what a flop is 🤣

Animation works only for A-List characters.
I won't ever watch this.

@MarvelZombie616 - well I wouldn’t consider the Teen Titans a listers (at the time) but that show did very well when it aired.

But yeah won’t lie never heard of Creature Commandos till recently. We will see

@MarvelZombie616 - Animation only works for suburban families and violent animals.
I will definitely watch this.

@MarvelZombie616 - invincible wasn't exactly an a-lister yet look at it now. Not saying that this will undoubtedly be successful, just that the "project about unknown thing is going to flop" argument is kinda weak

Feel like it might have been a better business decision to have this, Peacemaker, and Waller be under Elseworlds as epilogues to the DCEU. Would make the continuity feel less messy before it even starts.

TheVisionary25 - 5/13/2024, 2:48 PM
@MCUKnight11 - I get ya

It is kinda messy but at this point , I just would rather wait and see how they deal with the continuity then speculate

I’m sure they have some plan atleast and it might make more sense once we see it in action as opposed to hearing about it.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/13/2024, 3:05 PM
@MCUKnight11 - also , why would they be epilogues to a universe that is ending if they planned to continue the stories of those characters?.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 5/13/2024, 2:48 PM
Sweet , hopefully we get a trailer or something then though because I’ve been interested in it aswell…

I like the cast so far & think the characters have potential because if there is one thing Gunn does well , it’s group dynamics & interactions imo!!.

Also , I guess the synopsis clears up that it is present day and not a period piece like some speculated.

@TheVisionary25 - unless the whole timeline gets moved back. Maybe the present is the 70s in the DCU?

@bkmeijer1 - I don’t think so , seems like it’s very much present day.

Excited for this to see Gunn tackle Frankenstein’s Monster and Circe, two of the great characters of the public domain. The DC stuff is kind of the most off-putting stuff about the whole project haha, like weasel and Flagg Sr. don’t have the same level of juice
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/13/2024, 4:03 PM
@tmp3 - Since their biggest characters are gonna be public domain soon (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and the golden age versions of the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Starman, Sandman, etc.) you wpuld think they would be focusing on, investing in and strengthening the IP that they actually will retain.

IP is what makes megacorporations big, because you can only get that one thing from them. You can't get it anywhere else. I can get a way better version of Frankenstein on Netflix around about the same time Creature Commandos debuts on Max, for example.

Amanda Waller assembles them to do her dirty black ops work? So they're basically the Suicide Squad then.

Wouldn't Weasel be the first DCU character to move fluidly between animation and live action though? Not Grillo's Rick Flagg Sr. Also Economos and Waller as well?

Loved the DC Showcase shorts and read a few of the comics. Kinda bummed it's not the OG team but I'm looking forward to another thing we didn't know we needed from Gunn.

I might check it out of curiosity, but man do I not care about Creature Commandos.

Once you’ve seen one James Gunn ragtag group of misfit c-and-d-list characters overcome their differences to save the world…you’ve kinda seen them all. We've seen family-friendly and hard-R misfits, so what is there left for him to do with the concept?

I’m more than happy to be proven wrong, but I feel like I’ve already seen this entire show.

@SheepishOne - “Once you’ve seen one James Gunn ragtag group of misfit c-and-d-list characters overcome their differences to save the world…you’ve kinda seen them all.”

☝🏽 this

There really wasn’t that bit of a difference between Suicide Squad and Guardians thematically, tonally, or in any way otherwise, and a few swears here and there didn’t make the slightest bit of difference either.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 5/14/2024, 10:28 AM
@FireandBlood - Couldn’t agree more. At least the advertised appeal of Suicide Squad was “okay, this is Guardians of the Galaxy but for adults”

But like you said, it really wasn’t all that different at its core. The Peacemaker series was much more unique imo. And I don’t think these misfit team up movies are bad, just more of the same. There’s gonna be a Drax analog, a Star Lord analog, a Gamora/Nebula analog, a Groot analog, someone there for a visual shock gag, someone there as the “early kill” that’s played for humor, someone with an incredibly lame ability, etc.

Zero desire to see this. I hadn’t even heard of this group until I saw it on here in relation to Gunn. I don’t get his obsession with obscure characters. Plus after being the gold standard for animation for years, DC animation has really fallen. And after seeing Gunn’s S logo and costume reveal after he promised a more classic Superman, my desire for that film has hit an extreme low. Sigh!

I'm interested in this team because I've never heard or seen them before. More than their new Superman tbh and this is from the start, even before the casting process and the suit reveal. I like obscure characters getting the spotlight.
