The cast of Gotham seems to be growing larger and larger by the minute. A couple of days ago, showrunner Bruno Heller announced the additions of Firefly and the Flamingo to the show's rogues gallery of villains. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Heller has announced two more characters for the show's sophomore season. These characters are none other than the villainous Calendar Man and the anti-hero known as Azrael. Heller's exact words were:

"W
e thought so long and hard about this. There’s so many characters that don’t have an origin story, so it’s not just a question of going back to an origin story, but its who fits in this realistic world? They have to have both feet on the ground. So they have to fit in stylistically. But we found the Mr. Freeze story be quite emotional. That’s one we’re going to look at. Hugo Strange is another interesting character we’re going to look at, as is the Calendar Man. And Azrael is another character that we’re starting at very early stage for. Tigress as well."

In the comics, Calendar Man is a criminal who is obsessed with holidays. He is known to murder people and commit crimes on holidays that are specifically themed for that holiday. He is not to be confused with the Holiday Killer, who is the son of Carmine Falcone.

Azrael, on the other hand, is a persona taken by a few different characters, the most n
otable being an anti-hero named Jean Paul Valley. Jean Paul Valley inherited the Azrael name from his father and used it to fight crime until Batman became heavily injured in a fight with Bane. Valley became the new Batman until he went insane and Bruce Wayne returned to the mantel.

The stakes are higher than ever as GOTHAM explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) uncovers more secrets from his father’s past, in the Season Two debut on Monday, Sept. 21 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

I bet they make Azreal a priest or something. If he's done right, it might actually prompt to watch the show again.
but he wont be done right

Calender Man fits the show but the best way to do Azrael would be to simply focus on The Order of St. Dumas rather than Azrael.
Court of Owls for a good 2 seasons should keep the show great.

Something tells me Azrael will start motivating Bruce towards vigilanteism.

Which is [frick]ing stupid. So Gotham will do it.

As dumb as the premise for this show is and as much as I hate the entire idea of all the characters being introduced while Bruce is still a child, I enjoy watching this show a lot more than both Arrow and The Flash. I find Gotham to be visually and narratively smarter on an episode by episode basis. With both CW shows, I can't get through an episode without getting so frustrated at how dumb the characters and plotlines are. They're both shows that don't need more than 13 episodes a season, so they fill in space with pointless subplots that go nowhere. With Gotham I find the subplots to be bery enjoyable and even distracts me from the fact that this is a show set before Batman.

Gotham is a good show, one of my favorites. But at first notice, Azrael seems like a strange introduction. But now that I think about it, Azrael will probably try to help Bruce fulfill his destiny to become the Batman. Either that or he'll be a vigilante that is seen as an inspiration to him until he starts killing.

*waits for people to realize it's a tv show and isn't connected to any specific material so it can do what it wants*

It's like you people have never heard of elseworld tales.

I think Gotham needs a costume vigilante and Azreal would be a cool addition. Maybe I should start watching it on a regular basis.

They need to skip about 7 years. Then it can start making some sense.

Why does everyone hate the show all of a sudden? Everyone loved it in the beginning.

@billnye69

uhhh a crap ton of people hated it from the beginning. many (like me) gave it a chance...then that abysmal finale happened and everyone pretty much gave up.
please dont deny how bad that finale was. almost every review i saw (from both big and small media outlets) agreed at how bad it was.

I guess it can't be Michael Lane, who I'd prefer over Valley. But I guess intro'ing him wouldn't make sense in this universe. Still, I've always enjoyed the Azrael comcept, & I'm excited for it to kale its way into the show.

@ Himura:

I have no idea what you're talking about. The entire season (including the finale) was awesome.

Also, the show has won all sorts of awards, so the haters on sites like this are clearly in the minority.

Thankfully, Gotham will be around for several seasons.

Calendar man could make sense, since wasn't the prime of his career right before Batman became known in Gotham (correct me if I'm wrong). He could start his career early.
