Ben McKenzie Hopes GOTHAM Season 2 Will Deliver "Exactly What The Fans Want To See"

Season 1 of Gotham received its fair share of criticism from comic book fans, and even its lead actor had a few issues with the way the weekly villains were handed. However, he believes viewers may enjoy Season 2 a lot more. Hit the jump to find out why!

Much of the promotional material we've seen for Gotham's second season so far has focused on the 'Rise Of The Villains'. With the likes of Firefly, Tigress and Mr. Freeze all headed to the DC TV show, it seems like the writers are keen on exploring Batman's world famous rogues gallery - even if Bruce Wayne himself won't be suiting up to fight them anytime in the near future.

However, things haven't always been like that. Many of the show's early episodes had a 'villain-of-the-week' feel about them. The show's lead Ben McKenzie told EW that this was one of the things Season 1 got wrong in his eyes. "
I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever," he confessed. "That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it."

The former Southland actor has high hopes for the FOX series' sophomore run though. "The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them," he claimed, "Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see."

Despite performing well in the ratings week-in-week-out, Gotham's been a divisive show amongst Batman fans so far. Could a new direction convince some of its critics to give it a second chance? Drop us your thoughts in the comments below!

Gotham Season 2 premieres Monday, September 21 on FOX.

This show lost me when it tried to introduce the Joker. Do NOT like the performance the kid they cast did. Tried WAAYYY too hard to copy Heath Ledger.

Impossible. Fox would never allow the amount of nudity we demand to make the final cut.

"Exactly what the fans want to see."

*checks Gotham season two*

*sees MORE prepubescent Bruce and his premature villains*

yeah, right. This show tried too hard to be a Batman prequel when it should have just been a Jim Gordon prequel, and now it seems as though it's just settling for a "Batman's villains" prequel without Batman.

huh....never really got into the first season and hearing it was almost like a villain of the week type thing....the plans, or hopes, for season 2 have me interested. I'll be checking it out.

@Jollem You watch this show right? How was the first season?

The show should've been about Gordon and his struggle with organized crime and not shoehorn in Batman villains when Batman is still a child! Hell, the Season 1 finale should've had the Wayne's getting offed.

No Batman no sale.

It's not even good for what it is. Hacky acting and writing, and the pace of an 80-year-old colon after a cheese plate.

take a page from DD you can have a few early fight's but build one major villain (Kingpin) to a climactic ending. Arrow Season 2 did a decent job of this as well with Deathstroke.

Anyone who thinks this is a top tier show is an idiot. Unless they fast forward in time to a grown up Bruce Wayne, this show will never be good.

"never give show chance because no growly shit in tights"

Major points for not understanding jack shit about required Batman tropes.

Back of the [frick]ing line, for you.

Okay..............I haven't looked at the comments yet. I wonder how many will either reference "cancellation" or "Batman" as the thing fans most want to see?

Let's check.......................

I really don't understand the hate this show gets?

So what if it doesn't have Batman? Or of the villains are all 10+ years older than Bruce? It was never meant to be a show about Batman. It's meant to be a show about Gotham and it's people, the baddies that make Gotham notorious and the cops that fail to protect it.

Yes, season 1 started off shaky but it had some really good moments too.

I love the Alfred/Bruce dynamic and Gordon and Bullock are freaking funny together. I'm not even going to mention the fantastic acting of Robin Lord Taylor and Cory Michael Smith.

And they need to bring back my gal Fish...man, I loved that woman... I don't care how many haters she has...
