GOTHAM: Ben McKenzie & Danny Cannon Talk Jerome's Return & A More Serialized Season 2

Gotham returns next Monday, and actor Ben McKenzie & EP Danny Cannon recently opened up about Season 2's more serialized structure and abundance of villains. Naturally, they also had a few things to tease about Cameron Monaghan's wonderfully unhinged 'Jerome'...

"It is a very very different show," revealed Gotham star Ben McKenzie, while speaking to EW about the show's impending return next week. "It is almost completely serialized. We’re aiming for a grander, saga-type construction in which we can actually sit with the characters and understand their motivations and how the turbulence of their lives affects the greater landscape."

Season 2 has been dubbed the 'Rise Of The Villains' - something that EP Danny Cannon explains has come about as a result of its more serialized structure. "What we've done is up the ante level. Now that we have the confidence of the world, we can start to add characters" he claimed. "So when we call this season the rise of the villains, it’s very much that. More villains move in to take their piece of the pie and Gordon has to go to very extreme measures to quell the chaos that ensues."

In addition to promising a darker tone, the actor and producer both had a few exciting things to tease about the season's early episodes. “At the beginning of the season, we visit Arkham, where so many people that Gordon has locked up and so many potential villains share the same air,” Cannon revealed. "You’re going to want to watch the first episodes," McKenzie chimed in, "Jerome is very much in those, and Cameron Monaghan does an absolutely fantastic job in the role. I think it will give the show the shot of adrenaline that it needs coming back into Season 2."

Despite only making one appearance last year, Monaghan's 'proto-Joker' Jerome has swiftly become a fan favorite character. Are you excited about his expanded role in Season 2? EW also released a sneak peek for US viewers at the chaos headed to Season 2, titled "New Days, Dark Nights".

Gotham Season 2 premieres next Monday, 21 September on FOX.

@fettastic- Are you trolling right now?

This show is pure shit. As a massive Batman fan, and someone who desperately wanted this show to be good, and fave it too many chances...it sucks.

I give it one, maybe two more seasons before the rest if the world catches on.

I'm 7 episodes in and the show is pretty shitty. It has moments...which are always quickly lost.
And on of the main problems is that show needs less serialization, not more. Not looking too good here.

I don't really know why everyone is hating on the show, as a Batman fan, I really enjoyed season 1. Yeah, it isn't as awesome as "The Flash", but it still has some [frick]ing amazing characters like the penguin, who is one of my favorite Batman villians now because of this show, but that whole realtionsship between Bruce and Selina sucks indeed...
Btw the KING of Gotham -

Great [frick]ing show!!

Hated the Whole BATMAN prequel idea, n villains aging more than batman..

But the way the show ran in season01, just got my attention.

Loved whole theme of the Show, dark n gritty.

Still a better season one than 'Some of cb tv shows'.

Any show that has to compete against MNF isn't going to go gangbusters with the ratings.

I bought the first season of Gotham on Blu-ray. I'm binge-watching the second half of the series this weekend if I get a chance.

Jerome isn't Joker. He's going to turn out to be Jeremy Carne, the Carneval Kid.
This show was decent last season, but the new one stepped up its game considerably.
