GOTHAM: James Frain's 'Theo Galavan' May Actually Be "A Very Famous DC Villain"

James Frain is great at playing villains, so it was no surprise to see him join the cast of Gotham as incoming Season 2 antagonist 'Theo Galavan'. However, we may have underestimated just how pivotal his role will be. Hit the jump for more details!

Speaking to TV Guide, Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon elaborated on the integral role James Frain's 'Theo Galavan' will have in the 'Rise of the Villains' during the show's sophomore season. Previously described by Deadline as a "billionaire industrialist" with a "centuries-old vendetta", Cannon claimed that Galavan will initially present himself as the savior of Gotham City.

"Theo Galavan arrives in Gotham as a prodigal son returning. He comes from a very wealthy family with ancient roots in the building and foundation of Gotham. It takes a while for us to understand why he came back to Gotham and what his plan is, but it's an insidious one, obviously. He's a little bit like the Great Gatsby and Dracula coming to town with money and influence and charm and trying to bend to Gotham to serve him."

However, it seems Galavan may have an even more sinister agenda at hand. "This season is about how one man will unleash and empower the villains and make them understand that they are more powerful than the people fighting against them," Cannon announced, "They are the pioneers for Gotham. They are the ones who will change things because with chaos and destruction is the only way you can build. You can't rebuild a city without first destroying it."

To make matters even more intriguing, Cannon revealed that Frain's character is in fact the "origins of a very famous DC villain". Based on what we've already heard, many believe Galavan could be Gotham's very own 'Ra's Al Ghul'. However, given that the Demon's Head featured so prominently on Arrow last season, it seems unlikely DC would allow him to be re-used so soon. So if not Ra's, then who? Leave us your thoughts and theories in the comments below!

Gotham returns Monday, 21 September on FOX.

Uh, that doesn't sound like Ra's. Actually, it sounds more like a version of the Court Of Owls.

Ancient Roots in Gotham? Big forehead, eyebrows, and "savage" look in his eyes? Uses crazies as pawns to wreck havok? Yep. Definitely going with Vandal Savage. Plus, he could call himself anything as he ages and has tons of wealth.

This show is great! Way better than agents of shield! I love the feel of it and the actors are awesome. I am getting tired of penguin though.

@Minty

Quick question buddy. How come you put in the title that he "may" be a famous DC villain when it's a fact in the article? Just to draw people in? If so, it definitely worked. I hate this show more than SuperCat hates black folk, yet here I am.

@MercWithMouth - That's a fair point Merc. I'm personally not convinced about this, even if a lot of other sites are. TV Guide's source article is written pretty... weirdly? It's hard to tell what they meant about this villain's origin. There's a chance that Galavan could just be there to introduce the origins of said 'major DC villain' - or he may the villain himself. I just didn't want to jump to conclusions.

@Vadakin - I thought the same, until someone pointed out this line "You can't rebuild a city without first destroying it." fits perfectly with this scene below. And we all know how the DC TV shows have taken cues from Nolan's movies.

Vandal is a Batman villain. He fought a Batman centuries ago that was a certain knight of the Round Table named Sir Ga-Wayne (Gawain).

If not Ra's, then Vandal Savage. In that DC cartoon, Savage explains that he has had countless ages to accumulate wealth and knowledge, so that would tie in with billionaire industrialist and a centuries old hate-on for whatever.

I'm guessing Vandal Savage just because of the name. He was always fond of using anagrams and mutations as an alias, and Galavan features several of his letters. A middle name could give the riddle away.

That sounds like the Court of Owls. Maybe he'll be this show's version of OWlman ? Maybe instead of being Bruce's secret brother, he is his secret uncle of something. I'm feeling it.

My first thought was either Ra's Al Ghul or Vandal Savage
