We had heard that The CW was in the process of casting a new take on Lex Luthor for the upcoming third season of Superman and Lois, and the surprising pick to play this latest small-screen incarnation of the iconic DC Comics villain has now been revealed.

EW reports that The Walking Dead alum Michael Cudlitz will step into the shoes of the Man of Steel's most infamous foe.

According to the official character description, this version of Luthor will be "known to the world as the visionary billionaire behind LexCorp, but secretly, the criminal underworld knows who Lex truly is: a brutal psychopath who terrorizes anyone he crosses paths with."

This Former 'The Walking Dead' Star Has Some Harsh Words For Rick Grimes

Cudlitz, who played tough-as-nails Sergeant Abraham Ford on the AMC zombie drama series before his character had his head bashed in by Negan, certainly doesn't seem like an obvious choice to play Lex, so we're sure this news will stir up some debate.

Check out a recent season 3 teaser below along with a lengthy synopsis, and let us know what you make of this casting in the comments section.

"Superman & Lois season 3 begins just weeks after Clark Kent/Superman defeated Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt), and Clark and Lois are now working at the Smallville Gazette together and enjoying small-town life. But the Kents' romantic bliss only shines a light on how isolating "the secret" can be, as Chrissy (Sofia Hasmik) struggles to balance a new love interest and her friendship with Lois. However, Lois' own work-life balance is put to the test when an undercover assignment reveals a deadly foe that promises to change the Kent family forever. Superman would move heaven and earth for his family, but with a villain this merciless, even that might not be enough.

Meanwhile, the Kent boys find themselves being pulled in opposite directions as Jordan (Alex Garfin) discovers what a superhero identity really means and Jonathan (now played by Michael Bishop after Jordan Elsass suddenly exited the series after season 2) searches for purpose beyond the football field. Amid all this upheaval, John Henry (Wolé Parks) is haunted by his doppelgänger's past, leading to dangerous consequences for him and Natalie (Tayler Buck). Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and Kyle (Erik Valdez) redefine their family post-separation, while Sarah (Inde Navarrette) explores what the future holds for her and Jordan now that she knows the truth about his powers. Having learned the hard way that no one else can be trusted to work with Superman, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh) reclaims his post at the Department of Defense, only to face his own conflict in working with his grandson, Jordan."

Superman & Lois season 3 premieres Tuesday, March 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Well I'm happy for Mr. Cudlitz. Hope he can bring something new to the table. Sounds like they're gonna be ripping off Netflix Kingpin a little bit.

@xfan320 - Post-Crisis Lex if basically a Kingpin ripoff anyway...

I could see him as 80's Lex.

I though they were crazy when they casted Jon Cryer, and he nailed it, so I will not judge until I see him on screen.

@TheHumanSpider2 - My attitude precisely.

I was a little bitchy when they casted Heath Ledger as the Joker.

I ate crow. Won’t make that mistake again.

Here's a photo of him (I don't why this site never bothers to put up images of the people being cast as if we're supposed to know every actor/actress by name alone ffs).

Had to look up who Cudlitz was as I had never seen TWD. I could see it work out

@bkmeijer1 - he was great in Southland, I usually don't like cop shows, but Southland was really good and not boring/average like Law & Order and CSI

@WaffeX - I thought about Southland Tales at first (you know, the movie where someone claims to shoot herself if she doesn't get to suck Dwayne Johnson's character's dick).

That said, can't say I've seen Southland. Never really watched any cop dramas. Cool to Ben McKenzie there too though

Yep, I like it a lot.

One of the few times they actually cast a ginger for a ginger character, he's bald lol.

Seriously though, while I wish they just kept Cryer (dude was a great match for Hoechlin's Superman), this is very good casting as well. It seems they're going for the more "rich and powerful businessman" version of Lex, whereas Cryer's was more the "narcissistic brainiac" version of Lex.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - not sure we have much to go on for Cryer’s compatibility with Hoechlin.

Only time they had screen time together was Crisis and that was probably less than 5 minutes

Cryer was great but dont think he would fit the show’s tone

He was like a Gene Hackman lex type

Hoping now we get a Clancy Brown type

@dracula -

Clancy Brown would be great, but they'd probably think he's too old. He would be a cool Lex Luthor's evil Dad though.

@dracula - Hoechlin and Cryer both stemmed from Supergirl. They were meant to be together and I think they would have made it work just fine even in this slightly more serious direction. Cryer even had some great dramatic moments in Supergirl. But like we both said, it seems they're going for more of an intimidating version of Lex which I can dig.

He must be taking a break from directing. He was my choice for replacing Thunderbolt Ross, and I'd take him over Ford if I could, tbh.

@LiteraryJoe - damn, I like that idea. Now I need him as Ross.
