TITANS Season 2 Premiere Spoiler-Free Review; "An Exciting Start To The Season"

Titans has returned to the DC Universe app but after that truncated first batch of episodes, does this premiere deliver a satisfying conclusion to that while also successfully setting up what comes next?

The DC Universe streaming service has had something of a rocky start following the cancellation of Swamp-Thing and a shortened first season of Titans which ended on a rather baffling note. What should have been a twelve episode run became eleven, and we were left with a pretty underwhelming cliffhanger that definitely didn't feel like a fitting choice for a season finale.

Well, the season two premiere picks up where we left things last year, and that eleven episode storyline revolving around Raven and her demonic father Trigon is finally resolved. Unfortunately, it's far from epic and feels thoroughly underwhelming at times. Rather than seeing the team leap into battle against the demonic bad guy, we're forced to sit through more "fantasy" sequences, which, to be fair, aren't too bad. These shed some light on many of the Titans' motivations and what could have become of them had they made slightly different decisions in life. The CGI Trigon we've been waiting so long to see is definitely comic accurate, but the visual effects aren't overly strong and that could explain why his inevitable defeat was handled the way it was.

Once we get past the conclusion to Raven's overly long and convoluted origin story, the good stuff finally arrives, and not only saves this premiere but also ensures that fans will want to stick around to see what comes next.

It's not a spoiler to say that Deathstroke is teased here, while we also finally get to meet Iain Glen's Bruce Wayne. Despite the fact that he was set up as some sort of lunatic in the first season, this appears to be a comic accurate version of the character (even if he is shown without his suit) and more scenes between him and Brenton Thwaites' Dick Grayson are an absolute must moving forward. They share a lot of chemistry and it's clear that there's much more to explore about their unique dynamic in this world.

While Titans definitely dropped the ball with the entire Raven storyline and devoting this premiere to wrapping up the previous season was an odd creative choice, there's a lot here that works. Even Raven's story arc has its moments, particularly when the episode leans into those horror elements.

The final fifteen minutes or so are also great, and if those are any indication of what the show is going to become, the DC Universe series looks set to become must-see TV throughout season two.

An exciting start to the season once you get past the remnants of season one, Titans still isn't quite up there with some of the better superhero small screen offerings but it might be soon enough.

They really fumbled this show.

We're getting big budget, prestige shows based on Sandman and Watchmen, but something as iconic as the Teen Titans starring a character as popular as Robin gets this cheap, CW-level production with bad acting and writing. Sigh.
Really hope Reeves uses Grayson at some point in his trilogy

But is this show as good as Swamp Thing? Or Krypton? (which should continue on DC universe)

As someone who actually liked Titans S1, i thought this ep was super meh.
They f*cked up the finale and had no budget for the CG.
Still...i'm sure i'll enjoy this second season as well, especially since we'll get Slade, Rose and Superboy!

I love Nightwing.
I have always loved Nightwing.

And DC has ALWAYS punished me for it.
The main reason I am so dejected by DC is how many times they have destroyed Nightwing/Robin/Dick Grayson over the years just to keep him below Batman.

There is clearly an audience who want more from DC than yet another Batman film, but if you are a fan and get your hopes up you will be forced to compromise your expectations.

Saw the episode. They definitely shouldve kept it as last years finale.

Does anyone feel that this show is too adult? I mean, too violent and dark for these characters? In my opinion, these are the characters that are meant for the PG-13 audience. Their stories should be kid friendly. There sure was a lot of gore and violence in last season. I am in my 40's and have two boys ages 10 and 12. When they were younger, I introduced them to Batman the Animated series, Superman the Animated series, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. They loved it and loved that Universe. Now they are gravitating to Marvel movies. Marvel movies are so well done and they are catering to adults and kids. Why can't DC figure out that kids should be the most important audience? I wouldn't be a good father if I let my boys watch this show and it is a shame that DC can't make a Teen Titans show and it not be for kids.

Iain Glen's accent was baaaaaaaaaaaadddddddd.

Seriously why on Earth was he cast as Bruce Wayne? You have a decent, if not perfect choice for Alfred right there and instead you [frick]ed it up. Look, no offence to my guy but he's out of shape, wrinkly and balding. That is NOT Bruce Wayne, especially when Dick Grayson is that young looking, Jason Todd is THAT young, and I'm pretty sure Tim Drake is yet to be introduced.

Whole episode was a weird season starter. I have no idea why it was saved for the second season.

Titans is just "Fan Service for DC Fans: The Show." Characters are introduced on the sole purpose of "Heyyyy, you know this guy rightttt?!" *wink* *nudge* like how they introduced Deathstroke.

why the hell do they take this episode, which rightfully should've been last year's finale episode, and make it as a first episode for season 2? Ian Glenn is British and old, he shouldve been the perfect ALFRED!!!
This episode is just so so so weak...
Trigon shouldve been a giant, and all the Titans should've suited up and have a big fight in the end and have Raven levitate, with her cloak and all, and finally transport him to hell thingy, either that or make him get into her ruby on her forehead.

I give this episode a 2 out of 5. Sorry.
