TITANS: Starfire Actress Anna Diop Responds To Set Photo Backlash & Speaks Out Against Hate Speech

Photos from the set of Titans recently surfaced, and to say the response was mixed would be putting things lightly. Now, the show's star Anna Diop has responded to the poor reception of Starfire's costume.

Just recently several photos from the set of Titans found their way online, which showcased characters like Starfire and Beast Boy. Unlike previous photos, which revealed the looks of Robin, Hawk and Dove, the photos of Starfire and Beast Boy were met with an overwhelmingly negative response. Some fans even compared their looks to those of Marvel's much-maligned tv series.

While there were certainly comments from fans that politely poked fun at, or criticized, the outfits of our heroes, Anna Diop’s Starfire also received a fair share of hate speech. In response, the actress has taken to her Instagram to not only respond to the legitimate criticisms and worries of fans, but to condemn those who responded with hate speech.

#Breezy 🖤 To the ‘Titans’ fans: Yesterday a photo of me on set leaked online. And it was unfortunate because fans have been waiting MONTHS for a photo of ‘Starfire’ and a sloppy (😐) photo of me on a curb in 15 degree weather is what they got instead 😂 For the sake of our incredible fans - I hated that this is the first picture people are seeing. It’s out of context and it’s a misrepresentation of the incredible character I get to play. And also a misrepresentation of the phenomenal production behind it all. With that said - the hate speech that followed was deplorable. And though I am highly unbothered 💅🏿 I do want to use this as an opportunity to say that tearing people down is not something that I tolerate. For myself or anyone else. Too often social media is abused by some who find refuge in the anonymity and detachment it provides: misused as a tool to harass, abuse, and spew hatred at others. This is weak, sad, and a direct reflection of the abuser. Racist, derogatory, and/or cruel comments have nothing to do with the person on the receiving end of that abuse. And because I know this - I’m unfazed :) But for anyone out there who may not - I am here to remind you that whatever ugly and negative thing anyone ever chooses to say about you is always a reflection and revelation of themselves- it does NOT define you, and it certainly does NOT make you any less perfect than you are - Be you! Stay beautiful! Live breezy :) As always, Much love 💕

“Yesterday a photo of me on set leaked online,” Diop wrote to her followers in her Instagram post, which was accompanied by a black-and-white photo of the actress. “And it was unfortunate because fans have been waiting MONTHS for a photo of ‘Starfire’ and a sloppy photo of me on a curb in 15 degree weather is what they got instead.”

Clearly, the actress is aware of how her character appears in the recent set photos, as she goes on to call the photos a “misrepresentation” of the quality of the character and the production, and explains that she hates “that this is the first picture people are seeing.”

Finally, the Titans’ star used the post to address the disgusting hate speech she received in response to the set photos, and hate speech in general:

“With that said - the hate speech that followed was deplorable. And though I am highly unbothered, I do want to use this as an opportunity to say that tearing people down is not something that I tolerate. For myself or anyone else. Too often social media is abused by some who find refuge in the anonymity and detachment it provides: misused as a tool to harass, abuse, and spew hatred at others. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time someone involved in the production of a show or movie have been subjected to harassment and hate speech in response to their work. Thankfully, Diop is still going strong and isn’t letting the comments bring her down. Also, it’s wonderful to see the actress bring some of that heroism we expect to see from her character to the real world by expressing her support for others experiencing such treatment

Set pics will always be judged and talked about negatively.

Look, I just want the character to look like she's supposed to look. Orange skin, green eyes, and long chestnut hair with a revealing outfit. Even if the photo was taken out of context, the bar has been set really low for these characters. With the exception of Robin, Hawk, and Dove, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire look terrible. This is why TV isn't a good place for characters who reqire extensive makeup.

@MasterMix - “with a revealing outfit”

I... have no idea who Starfire is, so I can't really say anything on the matter.

Also, finally got started on my MCU rewatch marathon. And two things I've noticed:

1. Leslie Bibb looks, sounds, and acts so much like Rachel McAdams that it's honestly kinda creepy.

2. The CG in Iron Man 1 has aged like a mighty fine wine. The CG in Incredible Hulk, however, has... not.

This is why they should always send teaser pics in advance. Set pics always look so poor. For all his faults at least Synder teased the costume designs well in advance to avoid issues and you only need to look at the positive reaction to the Robin preview, versus yesterday

@Unionjack - except that Snyder’s costume designs (with the exception of WW) left a lot to be desired.

@Unionjack -
That's the thing, though. Why would Robin, Hawk, and Dove look so good, but Starfire look like trash? It doesn't compute.

F.uck the racists, though. Anna Diop is beautiful, and I kinda like that there is a planet of intergalactic black people out there.

Always got to be some hate filled a-holes to help invalidate any actual gripes. But what she said was dead on and nicely put.

I’m surprised more TV shows and new products don’t try to get ahead of these things. I think these photos really hurt the excitement for the series, rightly or wrongly, so getting photos like they did for Robin seems to be to absolutely be worth the expense and trouble.

@TheUnworthyThor - I agree. Though... remember the roll-out of Leto's Joker?

The people defending it were the ones saying the tattoos were just a 75 years of Batman promotion and posting pixel analysis showing that they were photoshopped on.

Even the really deliberate roll outs can turn into a disastrous snarl.

@Spock0Clock - I don’t know if that is a very good example since Leto’s Joker looked terrible in the movie so there was never any good way to roll it out. It was always going to be a disaster. But if Starfire actually looks good in this show that is supposed to sell a whole streaming service then this is potentially disasterous first impression to let people get.

I'm playing devil's advocate here... but if Cyborg was in this and played by a non-Black actor there would be some backlash, without a doubt.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I suppose.

@RaisedFisT - Starfire isn't white so your point is moot
