WESTWORLD: HBO Cancels Sci-Fi Drama Series After Four Seasons

In a somewhat surprising move given the recent season finale's cliffhanger ending, HBO has decided to cancel Westworld after a four-season run.

Last night, the news broke that HBO has decided to cancel Westworld after four seasons.

The season 4 finale aired on August 14, and while it wrapped up several major plot threads, it definitely left the door open for the story to continue. As far as we're aware, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were already mapping out one more season to conclude the series.

According to Variety, "a multitude of factors went into the decision to end the sci-fi drama, including the production’s hefty price tag, combined with dwindling viewership and an ongoing evaluation of programming across the board at HBO’s new parent, Warner Bros. Discovery."

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” HBO said in a statement “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey.”

Nolan and Joy shared their own statement through banner Kilter Films: “Making ‘Westworld’ has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so.”

This is obviously a very disappointing development for fans, but it is worth noting that viewership really did decline as the show progressed, and we saw a pretty steep drop after what many considered to be a convoluted and confusing third season.

The most recent season was seen as a return to form (of sorts), but it looks like that'll be it for Dolores, Maeve, and the rest of the hosts.

Events did seemingly come full circle in the season 4 finale, however, so perhaps it's fitting that Westworld ends right back where it all began.

Enjoyed season 1. Hung with season two though it was getting hard to follow. I think I checked out after that. I like smart writing but that show was starting to feel like work instead of leisure.

I would be bummed but Season 2 and 4 were so unnecessarily convoluted that it hurt the series anyways

Downhill after season 1. Because consulted as [frick]. We will always have season 1. 3 was fine though.

I know that viewership has really fallen off but this is still surprising.

Show lost me in season 3 but that first season is some of the best television of the last decade. It fortunately also works great as a standalone.

Like many here have said. After season one it's not great. That first season though... Absolutely fantastic. Watch it if you haven't.

I know some guys that work on another HBO show and the only reason that didn’t get cancelled is because the actors agreed to take pay cuts which were far less than their first season salary

Haven’t seen this. Does it end in a cliffhanger?

@TheSuperMex - Most people checked out over time.

I’d wholeheartedly recommend the first season. One of the best seasons of sci-fi TV ever.

@mountainman - I’ll most likely see season 1.

@TheSuperMex - as someone who has only seen season 1, I can vouch for the one and done experience. Season 1 is great enough to work stand alone.

Kinda shocked by this just bc they were one season from done…

I know viewership dropped off, but Season 4 was way better than 3, and they deserved a chance to wrap it up…

HBO is definitely gonna lose me if they start treating their series this way… already pissed they cancelled a bunch of shows, and if they start cancelling more shows early in their runs like NF does, Im just not gonna watch, and will probably even cancel my sub.

@ReverseFlasher - I don't understand why they didn't like green light a severely condensed final seasons, maybe one that even only was comprised of 3 or 4 episodes just to attempt to tie up all remaining important threads.

Canceling a series and leaving it unfinished is a great way to make sure people don't click on it in the future. Westworld is still a big name and I'm sure it has streaming potential for years to come even if the later stuff wasn't good, the fact that it has a definitive ending means people will have curiosity to see it, if nothing more than to see how it all ends even if it's a disaster. But knowing it doesn't end and got canceled severely limits its future usability, there are a huge amount of people out there that refuse to start something that got canceled, me being one of them. I would have likely eventually checked the seasons I I watch on streaming, but now I won't bother.

Sad. I loved the last season and I really wanted to see where it was going with their six year plan. Probably going to be a lot of this under the new regime.
