WESTWORLD Showrunner Confirms Fan-Favorite Character Really Is "Gone" For Good - SPOILERS

The Season 3 finale of Westworld killed off some main characters, but it's been established that death is not necessarily permanent on this show. It sounds like it really is the end for [Spoiler], however.

Well, it looks like those hoping that Dolores would somehow manage to resurrect herself with her original consciousness intact will be disappointed, because Westworld showrunner Jonathan Nolan has confirmed that the fan-favorite character really is gone for good.

In this past Sunday's Season 3 finale, Evan Rachel Wood's robotic revolutionary had her memories completely wiped by Serac (Vincent Cassel) when he attached her to his supercomputer, Rehoboam. The first two season's of the HBO sci-fi series have proven that a host's "death" isn't necessarily permanent, but it really doesn't sound like Dolores is going to return.

"Dolores is gone," Nolan told Variety. "We’re not yet discussing publicly the direction the show is taking, but the fun thing about this show is, you know, from the beginning Lisa and I wanted to make a show that constantly reinvented itself, that could be a different show every season. I think it’s important with a show in which death can be impermanent — these are robots, after all — to mark the occasion with Dolores. That version of that character is gone."

Of course, this doesn't mean that another version of the character won't reappear, and Nolan is hopeful that Wood will still be a part of the show going forward.

"I [frick]ing hope not," he said when asked if Wood would be leaving the series. "We love Evan Rachel Wood and we haven’t [sighs] started talking publicly about exactly what the show looks like going forward. But it looks very different."

What did you guys think of the Season 3 finale of Westworld? Will you be sorry to see Dolores go? Drop us a comment in the usual place.

This season started off well but I’m really not sure what this show even is at this point.

@Rmcbride7349 - yeah the last couple episodes of this season had some great moments but also kind of derailed this season quite a bit. There were only a few episodes this season that I would call great: 2, 4, 6.

Last 2 seasons both had great starts and then totally lost their way just to have a nice cliffhanger. I hope they dont drag this out for too long.

This season was much better than S2 and I loved how action-packed it was. The LA setting really helped, too. Cassel was boss, but I am not happy with how they treated him in the final episode.

Also, not sure how I feel about THAT after-credit scene. That character was my favorite on the show and I didn't like how small of a role he had in this season or the direction they sent him in.

This season was amazing, best yet, and the finale was spectacular, but this was the one thing I didn’t like. I found the character Dolores to be so interesting and I was completely invested in her story so next season will take some getting used to.

I mean, technically we know two different versions of Dolores still exist. The one in the Hales body and assuming it wasn't destroyed after it was used, the original Delores core. Also since Haleores saved a backup of every park character, presumably a version of Delores is also there.

So they have plenty of ways to bring back Delores if they want to, even it it won't be the main version from Season 3.

What about William?
Now HIS death f*cking sucked!

Talk anout leaving important stufff for a shitty ass end credits scene, unbelievable.

@Doomsday8888 - Yeah, killing William was really bad on its own, but doing it in an AFTER-CREDIT SCENE was stupid.

@Doomsday8888 - I really hope that William isn't dead, even though it looks that way. That after credits scene started great, was really looking forward to William taking on this newfound role after his epiphany and moment of clarity in episode 6. And then for him to get killed off? THE most important human character on the show? I really hope Hale is just torturing him and keeping him alive. What the hell was the point of all that character development in episode 6 if you're just going to kill him off? Really frustrating and, I hate to say it for a show that usually doesn't do this, really lazy and illogical writing.

@HeavyMetal4Life
THIS!
The moment he understood his purpose was such a hype moment, i was really looking forward to...whatever he was about to do and...they killed him???

Because of S2's end-credits scene, i always knew we would eventually get here, but i thought they would at least show some respect to the character and properly show the audience his death and a new beginning as a host.
But not like this, c'mon man...
Like you said, this was lazy af.

@Doomsday8888 - exactly! I really hope there is more to this than just some lazy, weak, head scratching and frankly counter productive decision. The more I think about it, the more frustrated I get.

Was Dolores a fan favourite though? I didn't mind the character, but I always got the impression I was in the minority, feel like she was one of the more disliked aspects of the show.

@Fishandchips - yeah especially in season 3 I really disliked her. I hated how OP she was. Didn't like the final fight between her and Maeve either.

@BigDriggs - I haven't got around to watching series 3 yet (don't worry, look at the article, I'm not bothered about spoilers haha) but yeah, I could understand why people didn't like her in earlier seasons, seems like I may be joining them for season 3 then!

There were parts of this finale that were great, but there were also parts that were either kind of dumb or illogical, or just straight up frustrating.

I found it unbelievable that not a single highly trained military police member could handle their weapon well against Dolores, kind of ruined those scenes a bit for me. I also found Maeve's turn against Serac to be a bit too predictable and not that well set up, and it just did't really make that much sense in my opinion. Finally, I found that William's seemingly demise at the end of the first post credit scene (which started out great, this scene) to be highly frustrating. I really hope he isn't dead, of all the human characters he is the one that should survive the longest. If he is dead that really undercuts the William character quite a bit. He had just achieved some purpose in his role in this world, we finally started to see him act on it, and if he is killed off then that would be pretty poor writing and a huge mistake.

I did like some of the ideas being expressed in the finale, especially that Serac was just delaying the inevitable with the human race. And luckily Serac did not die (I was really worried he would), so that leaves me hopeful that he will appear in season 4, as he was the breakout new character this season.

This season was not as strong as the previous two, that is clear. I think its a mixed bag of why this was the case. Its clear that the move outside of the parks resulted in this season losing some of its sparkle. The best episodes this season were the ones centered around either the parks (episode 2) or William (episodes 4, 6). Bernard was too much of a secondary character this season and at times his story was just dangling there. Caleb wasn't as interesting of character and got a bit old as the season went on, which didn't help as the season focused on him more and more. But perhaps biggest of all, this season should have been a couple episodes longer. There was a lot forced into the last several episodes and we had multiple storylines playing out in the finale which should have been spread out over more than one episode.

Westworld ranking:
1. Season 2
2. Season 1
3. Season 3

To add onto this, one thing that was a detriment to this season was the largely more simplistic take. Part of the fun of the previous two seasons was you being challenged to think and figure out what was going on. Brilliant and surprising twists and multiple timelines that kept you guessing and thinking. Sure, there was 'some' of that this season, but for the most part the season was pretty straightforward and linear. The final few episodes introduced some questioning, but this was largely due to the writers not really explaining stuff well, not having time to flesh stuff out, etc. Muddled writing and storylines led to 'twists' this season for the most part, at least in the end.

You can totally tell that the writers don't know where they want a season to go, and therefore neither do the actors. They only know about setting themselves up for creating something in the editing room. It's like a soap opera. All of the actors have to play every scene like they might be conveying true feelings, or they might not. Just in case the show runner decides to take it a different direction. What we loose are actors plating true convictions. With Westword, everything must be a mystery. What is Bernard's role? Who did Dolores bring? What is Aron Paul's role? What is Dolores really trying to do? What does she want anyone else to do? There's no payoff...there's only...guess what we tried to surprise you.

Wow, am I the only person that really loved this season? And also, apparently, some of you all really thought William was actually "the good guy"?

I really like the show overall. One of the consistently best on TV. I also appreciate that they take big risks and never stay the same. That being said, I think they lost something when they got into straight up linear storytelling. And it really says something when linear season 3 was way more confusing than all the time jumps in seasons 1 and 2. I really liked the Dolores character though. Glad they kept around some of the other old favorite characters.
