AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.: Brett Dalton Discusses Tonight's Shocking Revelation

Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired their Captain America: TWS ep tonight, and it was hands down the best the show has had to offer yet. The finale brought some shocking revelations out of the shadows, and into the light. Hear what Brett Dalton (Agent Ward) has to say. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Well, that was unexpected! I think we all figured there'd be a few twists and turns (especially in an episode actually titled "Turn, Turn, Turn") but I don't think anyone could have guessed that 'ol reliable Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) would turn out to be a Hydra sleeper, and that Garret (Bill Paxton) was his superior...and the Clairvoyant. Last week's cliffhanger made hid seem as if Victoria Hand was the new big bad, but at the end of this week's ep she proved herself to be one of the last high ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agents left...before being gunned down by the traitorous Ward that is. So where does this leave the characters? Marvel chatted to Dalton all about it, and it seems the ruthless Ward has formed a few genuine ties to his former "teammates" -- one in particular of course.

"Try as he might to keep those things in check, I think his feelings--or certain feelings--might have crept up and surprised him. When you’re living, eating, and on missions with people, you become part of that family unit. I think that it probably gets harder and harder to turn that off. I mean I couldn’t imagine doing that myself. Being an embedded spy has to be one of the most difficult jobs I could imagine. Because you have to wear one mask, and not forget about your job, your duty, at the same time. You have to let your guard down in a way, because they need to trust you. But it’s a false sense of letting your guard down. But my loyalty to Garrett wins out. So I have to follow his orders and I have to make some difficult decisions."

There's much more at the link below. What did you guys think of this ep? Has Ward really been Hydra all along, or is he perhaps a double, double agent? Those last couple of shots may have suggested that he's at the vety l;east conflicted. Sound off in the usual place.

Somehow those three kills at the end were simulated. Not sure exactly but that screamed of setup in order to track Hydra's final moves.

Was that Cap that answered the secure call on Fury's phone from May?

I still think Zola is the clairvoyant. He needs the GO 325 to fix his physical form.

Even if he does repent of his sins, there is no going back. He killed 3 agents, an innocent man, and betrayed his team. I'll be pissed if he gets back on the team.

I have a feeling he is a double agent as well, but the way the show is throwing out twists who knows.

@LEE777 - My words exactly. I hope Ward stays bad, but since AoS/Marvel is ultimately on ABC(Disney), somehow the ones he shot were prolly LMDs. Its prolly a plan to imbed Ward into HYDRA. Remember, its TV - anything can happen.

He's a double agent acting under Coulson's orders. Expect a line in the season finale along the lines of, 'I needed the rest of you to believe Ward betrayed us if I wanted HYDRA to believe it.' Hope he gets gunned down anyway, painted as some kind of tragic hero. Can't stand this actor.

If Ward is Hydra why did he help Skye plant that bomb?

HRDWYR @ Yeah good point, I hope he stays bad tho, gives the series the gritty feel it needs.

Maybe he'll stay around a couple of seasons and have a final showdown with the crew fingers crossed.

This series was taking a nosedive fast but now damn, its up there with WALKING DEAD and ARROW, if it carries on like this its gonna overtake ARROW easy!

Yeah, ummm, to whoever thinks that Zola is the Clairvoyant and needs the serum to fix his physical body- Zola died about 40 years ago, so unless they froze it, his body is decayed way beyond saving by that serum. Plus, I bet once you transfer his consciousness into the computer, there's no transfering it back to his brain, even if they did freeze it. And I just think that Zola is a character that might get mentioned on TV, but would only be shown in the movies.

Someone commented this on Reddit:

"I just realized, Ward has the Clairvoyant prosthetic eyes! That is why they focused on his eyes so much in this episode. (The knife fight, the end sequence.)
I think he is being forced to do what he is doing, and he might not even have known that the eyes were prosthetic until the knife fight.
This makes a lot more sense than brainwashing too, because they have already used it in the show."

Ward did not shoot Victoria Hand in the head and we do not see where the additional two shots landed. One never knows...an expert marksman can hit spots that aren't vital, but look to do the damage. That's a long shot, but not out of the realm of possibilities.
