AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Executive Producers Discuss Moving On From Ghost Rider To LMD's

While Ghost Rider's time on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is seemingly at an end, the show still has plenty of twists and turns with the Darkhold and Life Model Decoys when it returns next month...

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. announced that their fourth season would introduce Ghost Rider, many fans hoped that the Spirit of Vengeance would feature in a season-long capacity. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case when Robbie Reyes seemingly sacrificed himself to destroy the demon core and his Uncle Eli in the winter finale of the show.

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be shifting its focus to AIDA and Life Model Decoys upon its return, but don't count out Ghost Rider just yet. “He is trapped in another place,” co-showrunner Jed Whedon said to TV Line, “which usually means that he’s not dead.” Executive producer Jeffrey Bell also elaborated that a season-long stint of Ghost Rider would be troublesome both financially and creatively. “[Ghost Rider is] a lot for 22 [episodes], especially with everything else that we like and care about on the show. It would feel like one flavor over a long period of time, but we’ve certainly left it open [to revisit]."

The Darkhold will continue to serve as the connective tissue in between each arc of the season, but the production team wanted each section to possess its own unique "flavor" in order to keep things fresh. “We want everything to feel like its own mini world, and to have its own flavor,” Whedon said. “So we do think you’ll come into the next section [of episodes] and immediately feel like, ‘Oh, this is a different kind of story.’ So we’re excited about that.”

As for the second part of the season, Whedon says the theme of trust will be lingering when the show returns. “Trust is always an issue in a spy organization. But it’s much worse when you don’t know if the person next to you is the person next to you,” Whedon noted. “We want to not just tell scare stories of things popping out of closets, but the emotional stories — and when you get into trust, that’s when things get emotional.”

Are you excited for S.H.I.E.L.D. to tackle LMD's? Let us know in the comments. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on January 10, 2017.

Eh... Not really. I liked Ghost Rider. I liked the taste of the supernatural side of Marvel. I don't like the implication here that the plots are turning into "Monster of the week" style scenarios.

@MinaHarker - Huh? Where is that implication?

They've said previously this season is divided into three "sections"

So this is when the show bell curves down.

LMD's are probably going to lead into a 'Secret Invasion' storyline where most the members of the Agents Of Shield have been replaced by LMD's.

I didn't know Joss Whedon was still attached to this show. I guess that makes sense why they can't really get a good direction, focused theme, or meaningful story half the time.

This show needs a new producer badly. There is so much potential in the hands of someone with even moderate amounts of talent.

Other than one or two standout episodes a season, this show feels lost, not sure what it's doing at any point in time.

@RealNimbus - Joss is billed as creator of the show, and he wrote the pilot.

The Whedon referred to in the article is Jed Whedon, his brother and co-showrunner of the program.

The first half of this season has been so strong, the best ever for me and I've been a fan from day one. My one concern is the second half may not be as good by comparison but definitely looking for the show's return.

I love this season! But I roll my eyes every time they show that damn book, and it literally says Darkhold in metallic lettering on the cover. Who designed the prop? Fire them. Lol

@WYLEEJAY - That prop's actually one of my very few problems with this season. Just doesn't look (anywhere near as) good (as it could with a bit more effort put into it).

So this is just the Secret Invasion storyline, right? They're replacing Skrulls with LMDs, but basically they don't know who's real and who's an imposter.

Spock0Clock - 12/28/2016, 11:20 AM
@MatioShack - Similar enough, but thankfully there's not 30 years of comic continuity to screw with in Agents. The LMDs have seemingly only existed for months, not decades (though Tony's reference in Avengers opens the door to a preexisting program and possibly possibly a character like Simmons being an LMD for the last season or so).

I don't think they'll be that ambitious, though. It's potentially a good twist, but it's such a middle finger to viewers if it isn't handled well.

It's going to be "emotional"... ugh.. so less action, more feelings? SOUNDS BORING!
