AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.: Grant Ward Returns In A New Photo; New Synopsis Released

With one week left until Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns from its hiatus, ABC has released a new photo of Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), along with a synopsis for episode 17, "Identity and Change"...

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns next week from its hiatus, and brings with it a brand new status quo. The last we saw of the team, a majority of them had been replaced by LMD's and had their minds uploaded to the Framework, an alternate virtual reality created by Holden Radcliffe (with the assistance of the Darkhold). When Agents Daisy and Simmons entered the Framework to save their team, it was revealed to be a twisted version of what they knew, with Hydra in control of the world and their old nemesis Grant Ward very much alive.

Ahead of the show's return next week, ABC have released a new photo of Ward, along with a for episode 17, titled "Identity and Change", which you can view below. While brief, it reveals that Daisy and Simmons will meet the Inhuman Resistance within the world of the Framework, though their identity remains a mystery for the time being.

Are you looking forward to Ward's return? Let us know in the comments! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns with "What If..." on April 4, 2017.

As Daisy and Simmons struggle to discover an escape route to the real world, the identity of the Inhuman leader of the Resistance is revealed.

@MattBellissimo - Oh yeah, probably the most fun BTS stuff I've ever seen. Sadly we're probably not going to get an all-out Round 2 anytime soon with Hayley Atwell no longer on active MCU duty. Shame on them for cancelling Agent Carter for that reason alone! :(

The Inhuman leader is Mace, isn't it? 100% calling it right now.

@SGMusic - That's actually a likely scenario. Forgot that they didn't show Mace in their "where are they now" epilogue.

It's been nearly a month, and mine is not the first article to show Ward back from the dead.

So nope. Try again.

@MattBellissimo - You are aware that just because someone else prints something first doesn't mean that it's not a spoiler, right?

I don't have a horse in this race, but your reasoning as to why your article isn't a spoiler makes no sense.

Let's say twelve other sites printed the same news, if your article happened to the first one someone reads (or more likely, stumbles into), then YOU spoiled the upcoming episode, never mind what those other twelve sites did.

The same thing would apply for whatever that person found the information first.

And that's okay. News, be it from comics or movies, has an expiration date and no one will care after the fact though let's not pretend that there won't be spoilage.

Ward is going to have his virtual construct transferred into an LMD body. Calling it, now.

@Luminus - Good thought. I can totally see that happening.

I guess though, that whilst certain characters have been "uploaded" into the Framework directly from their brains, the version of Ward that exists within the Framework is just a projection of his self, based on the collective memories of Daisy, Coulson, Fitz, etc, kind of like in Inception. Therefore it all depends on how much he truly "exists" within the Framework, and how much of them there would be to download that was actually real.

Realistically, Agents of SHIELD is going to have to be looking to wrap up either this season, or next (given all other TV properties they have in development its ratings aren't really high enough to justify indefinite renewal) and so I just hope they are given the opportunity to build towards a proper ending. Ideally it would be something that brings the show full-circle and wraps things up in a satisfying manner, so yeah, i'd quite like to see Ward be a part of that.

@528491 - He will be an exact duplicate. TV writers almost never think things through to that degree. Perfect example, the Sif vs. Kree episode. The Kree is shown going up against regular humans and is even held at gunpoint, then suddenly he's able to put up a fight against an Asgardian. Utter nonsense.

@528491 - Your point about the renewal of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't quite true. While it's overall ratings may be relatively weak, if I recall it pulls in a highly desired demographic for advertisers, which may have a lot to do with it being renewed.

@Luminus - i hope so his a great actor on the show, more of him would be great.
Asturgis
Asturgis - 3/29/2017, 3:47 AM
@Luminus - Yep, and he's going to be "programmed" to be good again, hence another season of the team not trusting him, but finally trusting him, and him realizing who he was before, and a) becoming bad again, or b) sacrificing himself for the team who gave him nothing but shit for an entire season.

Ward is such a great character, and the guy who plays him is a very good actor.

Man just end this show, it tarnishes Joss Whedon's name just by existing. I am a massive Marvel fan, and consider everything else they've done except Iron Man 2 and the back half of Luke Cage to be of decent quality (even the Dark World and Iron Fist have their moments, they're average, not bad). But this show is just plain bad, there's no way around it. Enjoyable sometimes in a so bad it's good way, but bad. I watched right through the Ghost Rider thing and stopped before all this LMD stuff (which sounds mind numbingly dull) but just gave up. Lumps in with Flash, Arrow, Gotham and Supergirl as shows that are of a quality that isn't acceptable with things like Daredevil being made today. But the DC shows, what I've seen of them, you can tell they're at least trying their best, though it's still lame. Agents of SHIELD has had this vibe since halfway through season 1 that they're totally half-assing it and not even trying. Like the people involved don't care that much and are just making it because? Anyone else get that vibe?

That said, Chloe ? is remarkably good looking and got me through the seasons I did watch.

And that scene where she fights all those dudes on her own somewhere in season 2 I think was high quality, and resembled something of a show where they gave two [frick]s. Gave me hope. Then there was nothing like it again.

@connorblaze - The series is much better without the goofball Hunter and Morse crap. Whedon was tarnished by AoU.

@connorblaze - Dude, you don't like the show? Don't watch! But don't piss in the cheerios of all the people who really love this show, me included, baying at the moon to have it cancelled.

So, no, I do not get the "vibe" you claim. And I am quite happy that it will stay on the air despite its detractors.

I've watchecd the show since episode one and have enjoyed each and every installment. Entertainment is a personal thing; if you don't like it, don't watch. But other people DO like it.

@bropous - Don't worry about this guy, he's one of the 10 I've ever seen here say AoS is bad. Even DC fans watch AoS weekly and love it. Even my mom loves AoS. Even my mom's dog loves AoS. Everyone loves AoS.

It's on the contrary the only comic-book show who's trying (since Jessica Jones), and succeeding, to better itself, and saying the opposite only means you live in reverse world. Also the only show, outside of Netflix shows, with great actors, a real, good season-long story line that doesn't end in complete shite, and the only example of a sci-fi show these past few years where they're nailing the humor and avoiding all the teenage BS drama all the CW shows are built on.

I say it's the best sci-fi show, not only comic-book show, on TV right now, since Stranger Things and Westworld are in-between seasons. With The 100. Legion is really good but not for everyone.

From my understanding, this will be a "What-If" that branches out from season 1. So basically "What If Hydra won the Winter Soldier conflict"
Haltiamieli
Haltiamieli - 3/28/2017, 7:06 AM
@MattBellissimo - I think the what-if starts way before season 1 considering Coulson has never joined SHIELD. Presumably that has led to the Avengers never coming together in the first place etc. (confirming Coulson's lynchpin status in the world), though I expect the backstory of the Framework world will be left very vague, because actual explanations would quickly became really contrived. Much can be handwaved as it being a simplified simulation and not an actual real world with long history.
