After the announcement that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be receiving a sixth season, fans of the show were able to breathe a sigh of relief, but now it looks like they'll be waiting a while for Season 6.

Fans of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. rejoiced when they learned the Marvel series would earn a sixth season, however some new details have been revealed, which may put a bit of a damper on their excitement.

Following the show’s renewal, ABC released the full lineup of shows set to premiere this fall. Though a number of the show’s renewed by the network were included on the list, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was noticeably absent. And the reason behind its exclusion is because the series won’t be airing in the fall.

Instead, fans will have to wait several months until the summer of 2019. No exact date has been given for the Season 6 premiere, but it is highly likely that the show won’t return until after the release of Avengers 4.

Aside from the long wait, the show’s move to the summer is a surprise to the fans who expected the show to deal more directly with the events of Avengers: Infinity War, especially since the Marvel Studios film has been referenced several times over the past few episodes.

Fortunately for fans, ABC's President of Entertainment, Channing Dugney, says the show’s sixth season isn’t meant to act as “a final season.”

In fact, Dugney is optimistic the show’s move to the summer may improve its longevity:

“The show has a loyal passionate base. It does incredibly well in delayed viewing. By putting it in the summer we feel we can super-serve the show’s audience and possibly have it on the air longer.”

In all, it seriously looks as if there are no plans to bring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to an end anytime soon, despite such a huge shift in when the show will air. Rather, it looks like we can expect more seasons with our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as long as the ratings remain strong.

The show will benefit from not having as many episodes. I want to see a closer connection to the larger MCU. Also finally a super hero show airing in the summer, now just change the day back to a Monday or Thursday and this show might have a chance to be great. Right now it's alright...

@Saintsinnister - I disagree on the number of episodes. As for a closer connection as long as the movies are written 2+ years before the TV shows that's not practical.

@JDL - I see your point on the movie connection. If they could do it in the past, I don't see a reason why they couldn't do it again. As for the number of episodes, I am all about more content, but quality is more important. Less episodes tell me they can put more budget into said episodes.

They aren't going to get more in advertising to support that notion so there is no way that happens. The TV world simply doesn't work like that.

It's airing summer 2019, because they have to wait for the events of Avengers 4 to take place, so they know where to go with the story. They claim that's not the reason, but this lines up too conspicuously.

@Luminus - Makes sense. They always seemed to have issues with connecting to the movies (still remember their connection to Thor 2 was to act as the clean up crew). Having more of an understanding can only benefit.

I’ve been waiting for an article to discuss this... So we have a whole year to wait for more AoS. That’s interesting, and frustrating. The explanation given makes a lot of sense... the networks like some summer shows these days to break up the months of reruns and keep them from losing more ground to cable, and they often seem to be shows with a sci-if genre spin to them for some reason, so AoS would fit well there.

It also makes more marketing sense to have a Marvel tie-in show that starts airing right after their biggest movie of the year, rather than ending their season at that time and then waiting months to start up again, as with the regular season. People are presumbably more likely to check out the start of something while excited over the movie they just saw rather than tune into the final couple of episodes of a season they haven’t been keeping up with watching.

Still, one can’t help but wonder whether this is a hint about Avengers 4 and the amount of time there will be before things get set right. While they could always have done some kind of Time/space/dimensional storyline to account for a full season of a show that may have to take place inbetween movies that might be set mere days apart, or perhaps be a season that gets completely wiped from existence by the events of Avengers 4 should time-travel reset the MCU to prevent Thanos’s victory, now they’re free to do any storyline without having to worry about it... which would have to be a bonus to them.

I do wonder about the cast though... their steady job just got cut in half to only 13 episodes and delayed a whole year. Will we start seeing some turnover of long-time players even if the show does more seasons?

It was a roller coasters of emotions. Happy when I heard it was renewed but then disappointed when I found out it was only going to be 13 epidoses but then when I found out it was going to air in the summer I thought that had to be Infinity War/Avengers 4 related which relieved concerns I had. And now to learn that might not even be the end. Very happy news.

So both Gotham and Shield get new seasons but they're both delayed until 2019? Any reason for this? Is it because of their late renewals?

@Nightwing1015 - The reason it is pretty obvious for AoS. The end of this season will deal with Thanos finger snap. So I expect that half of the main characters will be turned into dust.
So they have to wait Avengers 4 before go on.

@Nightwing1015 - Just ratings, I would think. They’re strong enough not to discard, but not so great as to keep the networks from gambling that a new show could do better... so they try new shows in the fall, and hold back AoS and Gotham as mid-season replacements for the ones that flop.

The other possible issue is not being able to find the right spot in their new fall schedule for something. Networks still think in “blocks” of programming and don’t like to put shows that appeal to different audiences together on the same night, which gets limiting. In the case of AoS, the networks are much more freewheeling about such things with their summer programming, when a lot of their schedules are traditionally in reruns.

@Ryuzaki - good, get rid of May, Yo-Yo and Mack...Mays dialogue and acting make me cring and yo-yo and Mack aren’t interesting anymore.

Glad to hear this show will be renewed.. now they better not kill off Coulson because he is on of the main reasons I watch this show and sky/daisy/quake is beautiful is the second reason.
