Ratings Are In For AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., But It's NOT IT IS The Highest Premiere Of The Fall

They may not have even started filming the sequel yet, but Ultron is already causing a problem for S.H.I.E.L.D.! Despite being hyped up by Marvel all summer, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted with lower ratings than NBC's The Blacklist which, as you'll know, stars James Spader.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was hyped up all summer as arguably THE most anticipated new series to debut this Fall. However, it started strong on ABC last night, with an early set of numbers (courtesy of The Wrap) indicating that it had an extremely impressive 4.9 rating/15 in the key 18-49 demographic. When it comes to total viewership though, "Another set of numbers, measuring 56 Nielsen markets, suggested 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' wouldn’t be able to touch 'The Blacklist'." Ultimately, that really doesn't matter. While it would have been a good for The Avengers spin-off to boast that they'd had the highest ratings debut for a new series, these numbers are more than enough to ensure that it's here to say providing they remain steady in the coming weeks.

UPDATE: The Wrap has now updated their report, saying that: "blew away its fall competition with the biggest network debut in more than a year. The ABC show earned a 4.6/14 with 11.9 million total viewers." They also say that it scored the biggest drama premiere in 4 years!

I was hoping for record numbers.

The pilot was ok, hope the show gets progressively better. Some of the dialogue is really corny for a show made in 2013.

Obviously if this is based on Nielsen ratings Blacklist would win out. Blacklist's demographic is aimed at the older audience that still uses Nielsen rating system.
Who cares what Nielsen says anymore.
I bet anything SHIELD was viewed more.

I havent seen it yet, but given fans anticipation, I doubt it could live up. Once an audience has such high expectations, it never lives up.

Why do shows always bring together gooberish people to be the main characters? Agent Coulsen is fine, but the core group of the pilot were . . . childish? I was hoping for more a more professional atmosphere. Gonna watch episode two, but I'm not all that excited about it.

saw it. enjoyed parts of it. thought the air car a la Back to the Future was dumb and horrible looking. if there were no comic elements or hopes of future cameos, the show would die a quick death.

Putting it up against the # 1 show on TV NCIS makes it tough to garner huge numbers. The show has promise but didn't WOW me liked I had hoped it would. A 2 hour pilot would have been better. Hopefully it will get better in the following weeks. Love Coulson of course and the Melinda May character but the rest haven't grown on me quite yet.

Knocked it out of the park. It will get better as well, Graviton is week 3. this also doesn't focus on heroes, its a agent team, so its impressive that its even in competition with Arrow.

It appears the show may be trying to be too much. Comic book/superhero show that involves a Bond style super spy agency, but the show has a crime drama feel to it. Sounds like the show is trying to do so many things that it's mediocre at all of them. I'm gonna wait to pass judgement until I've seen at least 4 episodes, but they REALLY need to find an identity for the show beyond just, "THIS IS RELATED TO THE AVENGERS!"

@decimus83 I agree. I liked it. but.. didn't love it. I loved seeing Coulsen and Hill on it. But not a lot happened. and If you strip out the super heroes, quite honestly, the shows with just normal people REALLY need to be paced fast, be extra techy, have lots of COOL humor not kid humor, and be filled with above board action, not chase scenes equal to old Magnum PI/Rockford Files shows.

The next few shows better wow me.. or I will just wait for the movies.

and please, I didn't watch Smallville, and I don't watch Arrow, Mantinium. I won't even watch Bracelets if they make a Wonder Woman one. I WILL watch a Justice league one.

This is all good BUT it just puts the pressure on for next week.
If it falls by a large amount in it's second episode it won't last.

It's all about next week, and it's a very big budget show.

Anyone catch the little nods to fans throughout the show?

the "Journey Into Mystery" line from Skye? Also the "With great power comes..." line.

Anymore?

I hope they only keep this show for like 3 years. The replace it with heroes for hire or something. However if they do that they will need to up the special affects.
