Everybody's favourite troublemaking twig returns to mischief in the second season of I Am Groot. This time, Baby Groot finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians' spaceships, coming face-to-face - or nose-to-nose - with new and colourful creatures and environments.
Vin Diesel is back as the voice of Groot in five all-new shorts, while Kirsten Lepore, the writer and director of season one, returns in the same capacity for season two.
We were recently fortunate enough to watch the show's second batch of episodes and rest assured that they're just as good, if not better, than the first. Last month, we sat down with the filmmaker to get her thoughts on telling a new set of stories about this beloved sentient tree.
From the moment he first danced into frame in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baby Groot has been a smash hit with fans. So, would Lepore be open to returning for a third season or perhaps even a feature-length project that puts the spotlight on Groot in his most adorable form?
"I would be very interested in [season 3]," she enthuses in the video above. "It would be very cool to see a feature-length Baby Groot, for sure, and I feel like that’s all I can say. I enjoy working with this character in any capacity they will allow me to."
While time will tell on that front, we also asked the director for her thoughts on how Baby Groot has been embraced by fans and what it's been like to see the show's contributions to the MCU adorn an awful lot of merchandise (from Hot Toys to Funko Pops).
"I have all the Funko Pops over here!" Lepore laughs. "It’s trippy. It’s really wild, I’ve got to say. I just feel like one small person that doesn’t even know that much about comics, to be honest, coming into this world and really getting absorbed into the MCU with Groot."
"I’ve become so much more of a fan through that process as well and it hits even harder when I walk into Hot Topic, and find a wall of Groot toys, and seven of them are all from the shorts we wrote for season 1. It’s totally an honour to have any place in this massive world of mythology Marvel is creating."
Marvel Studios has discovered a winning formula with I Am Groot, so we're optimistic there are future plans for the character beyond this second season. What those will look like remains to be seen, but we're keeping everything crossed Lepore will be the one tasked with continuing Baby Groot's story.
I Am Groot season 2 begins streaming on Disney+ on September 6.
