Ms. Marvel recently ended its run on Disney+, and RISE Visual Effects Studios has shared the impressive behind-the-scenes process to bring the series to life.

Ms. Marvel introduced Kamala Khan into the MCU. The series focused on the hero as she unlocked her mysterious powers and learned about her lineage, all while fighting off of the Clandestines, a group of other-worldly beings wanting to open a doorway into their dimension. While in Marvel Comics, Kamala is an Inhuman with stretching powers akin to Fantastic Four's Reed Richards, the MCU iteration of the character established her as a mutant able to project hard-light shapes.

Realistically conveying such an ability while also dealing with the series' many special effects was likely a challenge. Now, there's a window into the behind-the-scenes process of the series. One of the visual-effects companies that worked on Ms. MarvelRISE Visual Effects Studios, shared with ComicBookMovie a reel of its work on the Disney+ series, which shows the fascinating journey to create Kamala's corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: 

RISE has worked on several Marvel Studios projects over the years, including Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, Eternals and Hawkeye. The company also worked on the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There are different highlights in this reel, including Kamala's fight with Red Dagger and her using her powers throughout the series.

There's something curious about special effects. CGI is able to create awe-inspiring worlds and fight sequences that, if done well, can fully immerse audiences in the stories they're watching. Ironically enough, however, it's often the more "every-day" special effects that are the most astounding, because, depending on how well they're developed, they can be challenging to spot. 

An example of that in this reel is the scene of Farhan Akhtar's Waleed bursting through the security door at the Red Daggers' headquarters. The breaking glass may not be something immediately associated with CGI, but as shown by RISE, it was fully created using special effects; yet, it was so well done, that it wasn't really evident. 

Ms. Marvel was one of Marvel Studios' most visually unique projects. Speaking with /Film, Ms. Marvel co-director Bilall Fallah discussed creating the show's distinctive aesthetic and special-effects usage: 

"[We] were so heavily influenced by the comic book and we really wanted to have the comic book aesthetic in the show, and it was not really present in the script so it was not really a concept; it was something we came up with. We were a bit afraid that Marvel wouldn't do that because it's totally different than all the other shows, so we really tried to present this presentation to [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige to show that with this with animation, we can go inside her head, her fantasy land, and her imagination. That's why we got influences from [Into the Spider-Verse] and Edgar Wright movies like Scott Pilgrim. And eventually, he liked it. He said, 'Very good. Don't go overboard, don't do too much, but stay true to the character and go on with it.' So that animation really comes from the comic book."

Ms. Marvel is streaming on Disney+. Kamala Khan will return to the MCU alongside Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in The Marvels, scheduled to release theatrically on July 28, 2023.

I keep getting amazed how much (maybe too much) stuff is CGI, and which we don't notice.

We might give 'em shit when the CGI is noticable, but they don't really deserve it. That bad CGI is only a fraction of all the CGI, and there is a ton of great CGI out there they deserve more praise for.

Maybe if they didn't have to do so much CGI though, they have more time to polish the bad CGI. Shattering glass looks cool, but it doesn't need to be CGI in my opinion.

@bkmeijer1 - After watching so many CGI artists channels on youtube, i undesrtood that most of the time is a lot easier, less dangerous and less time consuming to just go for CGI, even fo the most simple scenes.

For example, for the glass shattering scene, if it was practicaly done, and they didn't get the scene they wanted in the first take, they would have to take time to replace the prop/fake glass window and that would be a lot of time wasted, especially in this time and age of tight deadlines/schedules.

Other thing is that nowdays, a lot of things are changed on the spot, while shooting, so having CGI enviroments are a lot easier to adapt. For example, the final battle on Endgame, on the debris of the Avengers compound was filmed with a practical set with a lot of destructed trees and shit, but while working on post production, they decided to change for the more industrial looking debris, so they basically had to erase all the practical trees and redo the scenary with CGI. If they had went directly for full CGI since the beginning, they would have spared the CG artists from most of the work of having to erase what already was there.

@dragon316 - And plane crash being practical is 100% pointless and adds nothing to the movie. While I agree not everything needs to be CGI, this plane scene could've and should've.

@HeeroG - that is very true. For the practical teams, it does work better. Also with locations they don't have to travel to. Saves a lot of time on those schedules.

Still, I keep thinking of what Ben Kingsley said in the Making of Shang-Chi. He said that even the smallest practical things mean a lot to actors, as it really gives them a ton to act opposite off. And that authenticity rubs offs on the viewer. And I do agree with that.

Think relying on post-production VFX also makes the production crew lazy, as they know can just change it in post anyway. Nothing is said in stone anymore, and from those VFX artists we know it's frustrating.

I’m watching the finale now. I have a question. Why is the Statue of Liberty not carrying the Captain America shield like it was innSpider-Man NWH?
This takes place after the snap and the un-dusting.

And why is Liberty island so cleaned up? In Endgame it had all of those refugee ships docked there.

Now it’s pristine like nothing ever happened.
I can accept that in the four years since Endgame they could have cleaned iup the island but Spider-Man movie JUST happened.

I hate that Feige is pretty much ignoring the snap

@TyrantBossMedia - NWH was in the Fall and Ms Marvel seemed to take place at the end of the school year/summer of the following year. I think that’s enough time to clean it up. They do seem to skip over stuff. Like no response to the Celestial yet.

@TheSuperMex - As I said, I am willing to accept the clean up, but the Statue of Liberty was under construction and almost done in Spider-Man NWH and it's supposed to have the shield.

@TyrantBossMedia - My assumption was that the Statue of Liberty thing was going to be temporary, maybe for some kind of celebration. I don't know. I honestly don't remember it being talked about much even in NWH.
