POWERS Live-Action Television Series Lands At Sony Playstation Network

The Powers live-action television series moves from FX to the Sony Playstation Network for a 10-episode, hour long superhero crime procedural. This move is thought to be in response Microsoft's live-action, Steven Spielberg produced Halo series set to stream on Xbox Live.

Bendis' POWERS Live-Action Television Series Lands At Sony Playstation Network

After a long and tenuous courtship with FX, the live-action Powers television series has landed at Sony and will be streamed via the Playstation Network. Based on the graphic novel from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, the hour long superhero drama will follow Detective Christian Walker, who's charged with protecting ordinary people from the metahuman element waging battles high in the skies above.

The FX series entered development back in 2009, cast a number of roles and even filmed TWO pilot episodes. However, it's unclear at this time whether an entirely new cast will be brought in. Originally, actor Jason Patric was cast as the series lead, Christian Walker.

The Playstation Network series' first season will run for 10 episodes.

Bendis will executive produce, alongside Oeming, Charlie Huston (Sons of Anarchy), Michael Dinner, David Engel, David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis. Guiding the show on a day-to-day basis will be Bendis and Huston.

I'm sure they'll recast, which is a shame because the cast seemed interesting.
But it's also sad it's not gonna be on FX it seemed like the perfect place for this series.

I wonder how long it will take for people to start whining that the main characters have no powers or that the show isn't enough like a hundred other shows, the way they're doing with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

They won't because Powers is based on an awesome comic whereas AOS is just Joss Whedons brother skating by on Joss' nerdy goodwill. :)

People hate SHIELD because it's a Marvel TV show that doesn't feature any Marvel characters (and I'm not talking about lame ones made up for the MCU). That's like the 1st Iron Man movie starring Bob Stark, Tony Stark's half brother and his ragtag bunch of models/actors.

If Sony respect the source material (which they have proven they do with things like Spider-Man) and Bendis is allowed to have final say and Bendis asks Kevin Feige to help him with the casting and Jeff Lobe stays the [frick] away, then the sky is the limit.

We'll see how much that matters to the reflexive haters, many of whom seem to turn their ire towards anything non-DC.

And you do know that Marvel has published tons of S.H.I.E.L.D. comic books, and Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Victoria Hand, Phil Coulson, Deathlok, Lady Sif and Graviton are all actual characters in Marvel Comics, right? And that Skye will likely turn out to be someone from the comics? And yeah, it has plenty of main characters who aren't in the comics, too. But I guarantee the "Powers" show will create at least a couple new characters for the TV version, too.

Don't get me wrong, though, I think "Powers" has the potential to rock. And even if I think it sucks, I won't begrudge the people who like it by hoping that it gets canceled.

That's simply not true. See my reply to Nikgrid above. Did you watch like 1 episode and decide there'd be no comic book characters in the whole series because they didn't all show up in that episode? Oh, and Maria Hill was in the first episode. She was in the comic books since before she was ever in the MCU.

Another thing, and then I'll stop bogarting this thread: S.H.I.E.L.D. is a vast organization, and even in the comic books, there are agents running around whose names we never know. There aren't enough established S.H.I.E.L.D. agents with large fan bases to make a S.H.I.E.L.D. show comprised of only those characters. There's Nick Fury, but did anyone really expect Samuel L. Jackson to be a regular on the show? Cameos and guest spots are all we can realistically expect from him, especially since his character is spoken for elsewhere in the MCU, running with Captain America. And he's already been on the show.

Most of the other "classic" S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (Dum Dum Dugan, Frenchie, etc.) were Howling Commandos before they were ever part of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is why they popped up in "Captain America: The First Avenger", which if you remember, was set in the 1940s. Are these characters really a big enough deal that the writers of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. needed to come up with some convoluted reason to yank them out of their time period just to be members of a modern day S.H.I.E.L.D. team? If they did that, it would be bye bye Captain America, because the only reason he's staying in our time is because he's trapped here. So who here wants to give up Captain America just to get Dum Dum Dugan?

Honestly, anyone even remotely familiar with S.H.I.E.L.D. from the comics should be able to understand why the creative team behind the show has made most of the decisions it has. There aren't that many established characters who are associated with S.H.I.E.L.D. more than other affiliations. But the way the agency operates is pretty much exactly the way it operates in the comics. And that was the most important thing for the show to get right.

This is SUCH good news I would like everyone to be happy about this

...there is nothing here to troll about

You know... this the Y-the last man TPDs are the only comic material I can get my non-comic friends to have a look at.

Let it run > it will be fun.

Jimoakley666: "Not buying Jason Patric for the lead... Jason has just got a square head. Like Minnie Driver, ha ha."

Never fear, they recast the show. Minnie Driver is now Christian Walker. In a recent interview, Driver said what drew her to the role most of all was that she knew she could use it to be a role model for the square-headed community. Sorry, Jim. You win some, you lose some. :p

Nobody wants to watch a show with Maria Hill or Coulson in it. We want to see iron man or even war machine, thor, cap, hulk, wolvie, spidey, etc. Who cares if maria hill is in AOS? That shit is like saying we should watch a movie starring Alfred because he's batmans butler, or a show about lois lane.
Agent of shield is useless and its like PAIN. Pain doesn't stop, we just get used to it.

@Tetrahedron/MoreGambit: People dislike AoS because it isn't very good. That's it. Only a tiny minority could give a crap who it's produced by - and in fact, the show got an awful lot of goodwill to start with because it was produced by Marvel. The number of people who take childish sides and hate on anything Marvel/DC, regardless, like some do here is minuscule. They are not representative.

Expectations might be a part of why people might be disappointed, but if the writing were good enough and the characters and stories compelling enough, it wouldn't matter if there were no/few recognised Marvel characters. People might still complain, but it would be more along the lines of "yeah, it's good and all, but I wish their were more Marvel characters in it."

That isn't the complaint you're hearing. The complaint is "it's a bit rubbish really, isn't it?" That just makes the lack of recognisable characters compound the show's problems is all.

Powers is well written and has compelling characters and stories built in, but it still comes down to the writing on the show and the actors who'll perform those characters. Here's crossing our fingers that they do a good job.

Yes @starYezzus, i would watch that show because it has characters that people actually care about like the penguin, joker, riddler, poison ivy, catwoman, bruce wayne. i would watch the shit outta that show.
If i want to watch a show about some FBI wannabe's patrolling the city catching bad guys, i would watch COPs on fox.

I do yes. However as KeithM said "It's a bit rubbish" I expected a lot more from this SHIELD Tv show than what shit they delivered.

I pictured something more akin to a political thriller/crossed with spy drama, maybe with the tone of a show like The Blacklist. But then of course it was Whedon developing the show, so everyone would speak the same kind of dialogue (Just like in Avengers) and it would not have the depth or intrigue a show like SHIELD deserves. Christ! Buffy had more pathos than AOS has.
