Secret Invasion proved to be one of Marvel Studios' less popular Disney+ shows, but however you happen to feel about the MCU's (very) loose adaptation of the comic series, it didn't hold back when it came to establishing stakes by killing off some fairly major characters.

If you haven't watched the show yet, spoilers follow.

Maria Hill, who has been a supporting player in the MCU since her debut in the first Avengers movie, met her maker in the closing moments of the series premiere, and Talos, the fan-favorite Skrull introduced in Captain Marvel, was taken out midway through the six-episode run.

So, how did Cobie Smulders and Ben Mendelsohn feel about being written-out of the MCU? Perfectly fine, as it happens!

Director Ali Selim revealed that both actors remained upbeat when it came time to film their respective heroes' final scenes during an interview with THR.

"There is no sad day with Cobie Smulders," he said of the How I Met Your Mother alum. "She is can-do. She shows up, does her work, loves it, and brings incredible spirit. She and Sam did have a bittersweet goodbye, but who knows where Maria Hill is gonna end up. I don't think she has any superpowers or serum that will keep her alive forever, but they could always make a movie that takes place before 2023, in which Maria Hill shows up."

As for Mendelsohn: "And Ben, I gotta say that it was a little bit of the same. He loves being in the MCU, he's grateful that he's in the MCU and if they want to kill him, he'll die. He also knows that anything can happen in the MCU, and they'll bring him back if they think of a way to bring him back."

Mendelsohn and Smulders may be okay with Hill and Talos buying the farm, but some viewers most definitely weren't, and there are a lot of long-time MCU fans that feel both heroes deserved better send-offs.

"In Marvel Studios’ new series Secret Invasion, set in the present day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity."

The series stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Ali Selim directs and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.

@WhatIfRickJames - Even as much as I love seeing Cobie Smulders on TV (and I do love seeing Cobie Smulders on TV) yeah, no, you can have real dramatic stakes, or you can have resurrections, but not both.

@ClintThaHamster - that wasn't dramatic though

@Usernametaken - Not to get all "Webster's Dictionary defines" buuuuut . . .

Dramatic - 1. relating to drama or the performance or study of drama.

Aaaaand, just to get ahead of the next comment:

drama - 1b. a movie or television production with characteristics (such as conflict) of a serious play; broadly : a play, movie, or television production with a serious tone or subject

@WhatIfRickJames -
Feige said at one stage you don't need to watch the Disney+ shows to understand the films, so all of this logically has to be irrelevant going forward.

Screwed two good characters over for a POS show. AoS showed Hill and Fury way more respect

With the Multiverse and the Skrulls being able to impersonate whoever they want. They could come back anytime.

I do think that there was only so much you could do with Talos.

I wish they had used Kingsley Ben Adir for another more prominent role in the MCU.

@Forthas - I wasn't familiar with Kingsley before this show, but he really did well with the material they gave him. I totally agree that he would have been far better used in a larger role.

@RedFury - I am not sure what the role should be but his acting stood out and seems to warrant a bigger role.

You know, everyone complains about how they did Maria Hill dirty, but Black Widow was an original 6 character and all she got was Clint being sad and completely overshadowed by Iron Man having the entire damn MCU show up to send him off including characters people had to google, and no one ever bats an eye about it.

As for Talos, 1 movie, 1 cameo, 1 glorified cameo in a tv show. He got more of a funeral than Black Widow.
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 8/1/2023, 2:16 PM
@SATW42 - She sacrificed herself in one of the most poignant scenes in the MCU to not only save the universe but more importantly, save her best friends family. Plus, she was a spy. A big flashy funeral wouldn’t suit her, not like it does Stark.

Talos died saving a president that’s just announced the ongoing mass genocide of his people, in one of the shittiest comic book shows to date.

It’s not the same.

@PlusUltra - "Plus, she was a spy. A big flashy funeral wouldn’t suit her, not like it does Stark."

It wasn't a big flashy funeral, it was literally just a collection of supers who sent his reactor out on a lake. No press no anything. Those same people couldn't have also sent a wreath out for Natasha? Cmon man

@PlusUltra - ooooooh she got a gravestone in a post credit scene of another movie, that was more than likely put there by Yelena because it's eluded to that they are in Ohio and no one except for maybe Clint would have any idea of her roots there as a child.

The Avengers did her dirty, period.

Shame they both died in such an underwhelming project, especially Smulders, who felt like she didn't have anything to really do up until this point. Hopefully, they both pop up in a prequel project.

What stupid deaths. Marvel is always so strange with its treatment of diverse characters. Maria Hill is an establish "strong female character" but lets kill her off and make mary sue Giah a girl boss. Same with Rhodey. He has a storied comics history but they killed him off in the comics a couple of times and now retcon his best moments post civil war. Really odd way to treat a poc which such a rich history.

Show Or Not“
Saw that and now I don’t give a shit about anything Marvel till they start to hire mature talented people and not the lazy narcissistic spoiled entitled type they’ve been working with on these last 2 phases.

heard rhodey is a skrull. what a bad move. that and the high chance that ironheart will be in armor wars gives me zero chance to watch it. wanted a war machine movie since i saw the second im movie and they showed him. i was always a bigger fan of him than im. no i have no interest.

@grif - Rhodey isn't a skrull. A skrull had taken his place. Rhodey was freed at the end of the show. Rhodey will be Rhodey in Armor Wars, if it every happens.

It's funny, because revealing Maria actually survived could've salvaged the series. If she showed up, it would've required clever planning more fitting of a spy thriller than the cgi schlock we got. And it would've salvaged fury as a character by showing he's been planning sh!t from the very start.

I like Cobie Smulders and felt she did well with what she had as Maria Hill (which admittedly wasn’t very much) but the MCU version was just fine imo…

She never really was fleshed out beyond Nick Fury’s right hand woman and Avengers support sadly.

Hell , Talos only had 2 appearances beforehand (one which was just a cameo) and he felt more fleshed out imo and I was sadder when he died.

Anyway , I did like the show overall (flaws & all) and wouldn’t mind seeing them in future projects but no resurrections please!!.
