THE MARVELS Director And Producer Addresses How The Movie Deals With Nick Fury And SECRET INVASION Fallout

The Marvels takes place after the events of Secret Invasion, and the movie's director, Nia DaCosta, and producer, Mary Livanos, have now weighed in on what version of Nick Fury we're getting in this movie.

We're still not sure how The Marvels will build on what we saw in Secret Invasion, though we're not expecting any major tie-ins. There might be a throwaway reference here or there - and we know the Skrulls will appear - but anyone expecting G'iah to show up, for example, is likely to be disappointed.

Games Radar recently caught up with The Marvels director Nia DaCosta who explained that, while Nick Fury's recent experiences have made him "very weary," being reunited with Carol Davers brings out a different side of the S.A.B.E.R. Director.

"We wanted to kind of keep that connection to Captain Marvel [the movie] where we saw a lighter side of him, because of his relationship with Captain Marvel," the filmmaker explains. "Something I really like about Fury is that he kind of shifts depending on who he's with, and I think with these women, he's a much softer Fury."

"He's very weary after the events of Secret Invasion. It's a lot, and as we've seen throughout the MCU, he's sort of obsessed with protecting the entire world," DaCosta continues. "It's like, 'How can I do that?' In Winter Soldier, you see him doing some ill-advised things as he tries to be on top of everything. Now he's in space literally watching over the entire planet, so I think [The Marvels is] just a continuation of that."

In a separate conversation with ComicBook.com, The Marvels producer Mary Livanos also chimed in and reiterated that fans should expect a noticeable tonal shift for Fury after the seriousness surrounding his attempt to stop a Skrull invasion of Earth.

"What's great about Nick Fury when paired with Captain Marvel is that it brings out a lightness to him that we really only got to experience in that first Captain Marvel movie," she says. "It's really their relationship that brings out a lot of fun in each other. He's great. He's wonderful."

Back to DaCosta, though, and she's addressed one of the biggest questions fans have had since Captain Marvel: has Fury been able to forgive Goose for costing him his eye?

"Nick's just a very mature man," the director responds. "He's had time to come to terms and fall in love with Goose again, you know? She did what she did, but he's an iconic-looking man because of it."

The Marvels arrives in theaters on November 10 with preview screenings beginning the evening before.

"fans should expect a noticeable tonal shift for Fury after the seriousness surrounding his attempt to stop a Skrull invasion of Earth. "

This works for comics where you have different writers and stories. But for movies and shows it can be a bit jarring and a head scratcher. As if the right hand doesn't know what rhe left hand is doing

Anyways I felt a Charlie's angels kind of dynamic here with nick fury and the three women ass kickers. I don't need super serious and geriatric fury. I just wish secret invasion never happened. Failure of a show overall

@Vigor - I wish it happened differently. Think The Marvels should've been Captain Marvel: Secret Invasion instead. And it could even still focus the other Marvels.

@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, I get what you're saying and I wish that they had handled "SI" differently as well (maybe a larger budget movie with more heroes but not necessarily "Endgame" scale), but with "The Marvels" I think that they (1) wanted to keep it from being too close to "Captain Marvel" which was mainly earth-bound and focused on the Skrulls, and (2) wanted it to be more cosmic as a sort of "cosmic-filler" now that GotG is done (at least for the foreseeable future) and "F4" is still a ways out. That way they can keep something going in the cosmic corner of the MCU while we have more earth-based stuff coming our way with "Echo", "DP3" (which, while taking place across the Multiverse will still presumably not be "cosmic"), "CA: BNW", "Agatha: Whatever We're Calling It Today", etc.

bkmeijer1 - 11/7/2023, 2:32 PM
@StSteven - that's a good point. I do like the cosmic corner of the MCU, so I'm not against the route they're going now. Think Nova is also planned to show up soon
StSteven
StSteven - 11/7/2023, 5:26 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah the cosmic stuff helps to break up all the earth-bound stories, which is a good thing. Plus there's just so much more you can with space and the limitless environments, creatures, technology, etc. that you can't realistically do with earth-bound stories (even in the MCU). I've always had a fascination with space personally and even applied to NASA to be an astronaut (mission specialist) when I started my graduate work (true story). Unfortunately I was denied due to lack of experience (which was understandable) and I still have the little card they mailed me informing me of their decision. I haven't given up on that, however, and would still jump at a chance to go up to the ISS or even up in SpaceX or Virgin Galactic or whatever.

Oh, and yeah, I recall that "Nova" is supposed to be a D+ show/SP, but I don't know if that's been shelved for now, being as they don't really need him to finish the Multiverse Saga. So maybe after that all wraps up. We'll see.

@StSteven - "there's just so much more you can with space that you can't realistically do with earth-bound stories"

That's where my interest in space comes in. Even though it's worlds beyond our own, it still has to abide by the same rules of physics (I'd probably be the guy sending you into space and getting you to Mars). And I wanna see how the MCU tackles the physics of it all too.

But yeah, I can see Nova be delayed until the next saga. Although I wanna see him ASAP (for obvious reasons I suppose).

StSteven - 11/8/2023, 6:40 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Well, keep in mind that when it comes to science fiction the laws of physics hold until they don't. Same with time and space, which again opens up that many more opportunities for compelling storytelling. Plus, just based on how things have played out during the Multiverse Saga, it seems like Marvel is still working on hammering out the details of all this stuff. I mean, on Earth its a lot easier as we already know what the rules are (pretty much). But literally anything can happen in "science fiction space".
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/9/2023, 2:01 AM
@StSteven - yeah, that's kinda what is missing. Even in (science-)fiction, there should be rules everything abides by. Real physics or not
StSteven
StSteven - 11/9/2023, 10:42 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I would totally buy (and read) an entire book about how the laws of space, time, physics, etc. exist in the MCU whenever they get that all figured out. Would probably be pretty mind-blowing. They can make like it was an ancient text written by the Watchers, Celestials, or some of the other elder cosmic gods.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/10/2023, 2:28 AM
@StSteven - same here. I'm kinda thinking of writing an article on itself after Loki's finale. Although that is probably a lot of speculation and reliance on real rules instead of the MCU's to fill in gaps
StSteven
StSteven - 11/10/2023, 5:21 PM
@bkmeijer1 - If you do end up writing that I would totally find the time to read it. Personally I think that if I were to attempt something like that I would wait until after the Multiverse Saga is over because I think that Marvel is still making shit up as they go and will continue to do so until the end of the MS, and we've got a whole lot to go between now and there.

That said, if I had the time I might at least get started with what we do know so far (or at least THINK we know).
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/10/2023, 5:38 PM
@StSteven - oh yeah, it definitely makes shit up along the way.

And I don't think my articles are that long, so shouldn't be too much reading time. Since it's all about rules, I think it'll be comparable (if not a Part 2) to this one:

@StSteven - I will. Eventually. Just gotta figure out how, and especially when.
StSteven
StSteven - 11/11/2023, 11:50 PM
@bkmeijer1 - The the "when" is always the issue. FWIW, I started writing poems, songs, lyrics, and full albums when I was in high school and now have 10 albums (with accompanying artwork) with an 11th in progress. One of these days I need to at least publish them, even if I don't get to record them. I've collected them into an evolving book titled ""The Time Has Come", the Walrus Said, "To Talk of Many Things..."". Time, time, time...
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/12/2023, 3:33 AM
@StSteven - I think there are enough sites where you got put them online on atleast. Unless you want them in a book, then you could print them (maybe as a Volume 1 to leave room for future expansion).

As for my "when", I actually managed to get to it. Surprisingly, it only took me little over an hour:https://comicbookmovie.com/tv/marvel/loki/loki-spoilers-how-season-2-further-establishes-the-mechanics-of-the-multiverse-a201120

@bkmeijer1 - Oh cool. I'll give it a read when I get a chance and let you know what I think. The wife and kids and I are taking a vacation to Maui next week (first one since 2018) so between now and then I'll be rather busy getting ready (I'm finally about to go take my Halloween decorations down before the HOA yells at me), but your article would make for some good in-flight reading 😊.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/12/2023, 2:27 PM
@StSteven - it'll probably only take you 10 minutes or so I'd wager. But either way, enjoy the vacation (regardless of in-flight reading)
StSteven
StSteven - 11/13/2023, 10:53 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Thanks! Hoping to get some surfing, snorkling, and/or SCUBA diving done while I'm there. If nothing else, copious amounts of good food and alcohol.

Speaking of which, I'll definitely be drinking during the 8 HOUR flight, so your 10 minute piece might well take me more like a half an hour 😉. Cheers!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/14/2023, 2:08 AM
@StSteven - in-flight drinking is better than pre-flight drinking anyway.
StSteven
StSteven - 11/14/2023, 7:06 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Well, in-flight drinking is typically more expensive (although I just got a new credit card that will give me 25% back on in-flight food and drinks), but more relaxed now that you're actually on the plane and safely in the air. Unfortunately AA only has like 5 beers to choose from, but at least one of them is Heineken so there's that. Plus, this same CC gives me $200 to spend on in-flight purchases for both legs of the trip, so that makes it even better. And we're not renting a car so I don't have to worry about driving. So cheers! 🍻
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/14/2023, 7:15 PM
@StSteven - probably because of nationalist pride, I approve of your approval of Heineken. Cheers to thee!
StSteven
StSteven - 11/14/2023, 7:45 PM
@bkmeijer1 - That's where I thought you were at. Yeah, Heineken is definitely one of my favorites. A couple of years ago I discovered Revolver Blood & Honey (a Texas brew) which is an unfiltered lager flavored with blood orange and honey (duh) and I was drinking that quite a bit. It's 7% alcohol, however, each bottle is 210 calories, so I had to quit that after I ended up putting on 20-25 lbs, so now I just save that for the holidays, along with Guiness and such. So these days it's mainly Blue Moon Light Sky which is their diet beer (3.6 carbs, 95 calories) but still has 4% alcohol somehow. So I can drink those all evening and never get past the "I'm not drunk but I probably shouldn't drive just to be on the safe side" point unless I'm really on a mission. Having one right now, as a matter of fact. So cheers indeed!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/15/2023, 3:27 AM
@StSteven - Blood & Honey? Isn't that the name of that Winnie the Pooh murder movie?
StSteven
StSteven - 11/15/2023, 11:48 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeeeaaahh, well the beer came first. But I would be lying if I said I won't be thinking about that movie the next time I drink one of those. But only for as long as it takes for the alcohol to kick in and... um... so what again?
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 11/7/2023, 5:47 AM
I was just wondering; is Carol even gonna learn that Talos died in this film? Is any of that shit gonna be addressed? Will the Skrull conflict have any relevance whatsoever?

Secret Invasion was overwhelmingly boring and terrible. It basically killed Fury for me...at least for a little while. Add that to larson being so unlikable...you get a movie I'm more than willing to skip until I can watch it for free.
