SECRET INVASION Director Reveals Two Plot Beats In The Finale Marvel Studios Asked Him To Include - SPOILERS

Secret Invasion director Ali Selim has revealed that Marvel Studios asked for two specific moments in the finale and confirms Armor Wars will feature Rhodey dealing with the fallout from being replaced.

The Secret Invasion finale hasn’t only been divisive, it’s the worst-reviewed MCU TV show or movie ever. A complete mess, "Home" featured a huge CG battle and wrapped up the story both too quickly and in a somewhat uninspired manner.

Were reshoots to blame? Evolving plans for future MCU projects? Or just Marvel Studios not knowing how to conclude the Skrull invasion of Earth?

Whatever the case may be, director Ali Selim has told The Wrap that there were just two specific plot beats Marvel Studios required him to hit in. Those involved Nick Fury's departure from Earth and a deepening of the big Rhodey mystery.

"I didn’t feel any constraints. All I was told is, Fury’s got to go up. That was it. So we just had to have Fury go up at the end, and it would be great if Rhodey - if his legs didn’t work. And that’s it."

As for whether Rhodey really has been M.I.A. since Captain America: Civil War, the filmmaker added, "It’s heavily implied in the show, and I like the fact that it’s implied. Because I think it’s a lot more fun for audiences to go back and explore every Rhodey moment in the MCU, and look at it in a different light now that they have this kind of conclusive piece of information."

As expected, War Machine's return will next be touched on in Armor Wars

"Don and I talked endlessly about ‘Armor Wars,’ but mostly just to make sure that what we were doing would make sense to him when he got to 'Armor Wars.' And Sam and I never talked about what was next, because he just walked to the space elevator and I fulfilled my obligation to get him up."

Fury will return in The Marvels later this year but we've heard that Secret Invasion likely won't be referenced in that movie. It's a perplexing decision on the surface, albeit one that indicative of the lack of connectivity we've seen in the wider Multiverse Saga.

What did you think about the Secret Invasion finale?

This series turned Fury into a legit waste man

@PlusUltra - Winter Soldier Fury was the last time we saw Fury in prime form. It's been a lot of product placement Fury a.k.a. Let's do something with Sam.

@PlusUltra -

Feige is spread to thin. It's time for him to come in full time and cut the fat.

He thought after endgame people wanted the creatives to have more freedom so he gave it to them and here we are.😐

It's time for him to cut some of these shows. Cancel iron heart or dump it all at once like echo. Build a core team that we care about.

@AmazingFILMporg - I remember him saying that too. The directors and writers have gotten too comfortable and lazy to tell a great story...

Wasn’t Captain Marvel 2 supposed to come out before Secret Invasion originally? That would explain the need for him to go back up. As for Rhodey, yeah obviously Armor Wars is going to deal with the actual character, rather than an imposter. I just don’t get why the need to have him be MIA for that long. Just say he was nabbed after Endgame.

@DerekLake - They haven’t got a good enough hook to justify Armor Wars existence, so they’re using Rhodey’s abduction as an anchor

@DerekLake - Technically they never gave a date for Secret Invasion, all we knew is that Marvels was meant to release in February, but you could've easily had Secret Invasion before then, as remember there was no Marvel show from November-February, so you could've had SI fill that slot.

@eagc1995 - But before the title was revealed, it was set to release in July 2022, well before Secret Invasion. Even if they didn’t give a date for it, it was pretty clear Secret Invasion wouldn’t happen until after last year’s shows.

@PlusUltra - It’s supposed to bring back Justin Hammer, right? That’s enough of a plot hook, but certainly I think as far as a character hook they don’t really have anything else.

@DerekLake - If we are talking about at that early stage then yeah it surely would've had to been different. but by December 2020 which is when Secret Invasion was formally announced Captain Marvel 2 was no longer set for summer 2022, so we can assume that by that point that is when they changed things.

@Doomsday8888 - I actually am fine with using this scene as reference if that’s the case.

He’s just stoic and surprisingly sterile in his response here. And sure, Rhodey hasn’t showed much emotion in the movies and he’s a hardened military man - but this was his best friend. If I had to witness dying, I’d be a lot more emotional than this and I have no problem admitting it.

So I can buy this scene being an example. It actually works for a Skrull whom has to pretend to give a shit about this guy.

Everything else though about the buildup and secret invasion sucks so that’s the only time I’m giving it a pass.

I'm excited for Armor Wars and I wonder if it's ending will place Rhodey in the limelight as a "temporary" successor to Iron Man?

If I'm correct the original Secret Wars comic placed focus on Rhodey donning the yellow/red armor on Battle World and his fears of what the heroes would think of him (being a man of color...yes I know it's the 80s) taking on that mantle.

Also, I really feel like Marvel should do solo hero one shots after this series. Daredevil is the only exclusion (seeing he'll introduce more street level heroes). Series should only be done for ensemble characters moving forward (Illuminati, Dark Avengers, Marvel Knights)

@TheRationalNerd - I really like this idea. Lower the scale on these things but one shots where you get added context on some heroes where it’s additional material but nothing you necessarily have to watch in conjunction with the movies.

Like the original marvel one shots

@AmazingFILMporg - No. I don't remember thinking that. I've had troubles since the end of WandaVision, that handwaved everything Wanda did away, while making the people who had every reason to be against her and try to just paint him as a direct villain.

Rhodey being replaced by a Skrull since Civil War …

It just negates any meaningful interaction or development he’s had since then imo since it wasn’t the “real” one.

Plus, I’m pretty sure Gravik started his plan after Fury left coming back from the Blip right so it doesn’t make any sense for him to have been replaced beforehand.

Anyway , I do think him being gone for that long and not being there for his best friend in Tony as he died which make him feel guilt and grief for that loss could be interesting to explore as he tries to protect his best friends legacy after his tech ends up in the wrong hands in Armor Wars.

It could even add more compelling weight to his desire to do that imo.

So Tony died and that was a SKRULL? Now that makes me angry, they've deserve this strike, karma always catches up

I knew when he went back up at the end it was because Marvel intended to reset the status quo and act like this show never happened. Such a waste too because this show had potential

So Skrull Rhodey had a chance to travel to another planet to retrieve an infinity stone, weaponize it for the Skulls, have access to all Avengers for years including getting a close up look at all of their tech and strategies even freaking time travel and he does nothing? He even had access to the gauntlet. He even worked closely with Carol Danvers. She suspected nothing?

It's fine. As far as I'm concerned we last saw Fury in space at the end of Far From Home and then it goes into The Marvels.
This can be totally ignored.

The more I think about Secret Invasion, the more I like this series and what it has set up in general. I know I'm in the minority, but this series did something I didn't think would. It made me very excited for Armor Wars. Rhodey just became a far more complex character, and I can't wait to see his evolution in future appearances.

We got a Super-Skrull origin story. Yes, she may be over-powered, and she probably will be depowered or nerfed at some point but man, I can just imagine the adversaries Marvel can put her up against in her Super-Skrull state.

A Kree-Skrull alliance? That comment is probably a set-up for The Marvels with Dar-Benn most likely against it. But while others lament, we didn't get to see a Kree-Skrull war I see it the opposite. Marvel Studios is starting something new between the Kree and Skrulls, perhaps an insurgency and the start of a war. Plus, the whole topic of an alliance provides an introduction to Dorrek VIII, Hulkling, as a possibility.

At this point with so many hero characters, I'm looking at Marvel trying to create projects that pulls characters together, like Thunderbolts, which acts in lieu of a Black Widow franchise, and allows popular characters like Winter Soldier to continue. Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, could pull a team together from characters Marvel Studios casually threw into Phase 4. Several of these characters are based in the United Kingdom. Black Knight? Moon Knight? Scarlet Scarab? Blade, if rumors were true, he was connected to Dane Whitman and the Ebony Blade. Sonya could create a pseudo-Avengers/M-13 team. And of course, with her Falsworth legacy, I hope to see her as mother to a son who takes on the mantle of Union Jack, who could be Marvel's next Steve Rogers.

I see so much potential to how Marvel can interconnect all the disparate elements of Phase 4 we complained about and make those elements more cohesive. And it could come about due to Secret Invasion existing.

The more I see him quoted for saying after Civil War was when Rhodey got replaced makes me think the dude doesn’t actually know. It makes no sense.

I have no problem with Rhodey being Skrull since Captain America: Civil War.
