If you're  a fan of shows like Hercules: The Legendary Journey and Xena: Warrior Princess, then you definitely want to pick up the first season of MTV's The Shannara Chronicles, executive produced by Jon Favreau.  The series was a surprise hit for MTV, thanks to the dynamic chemistry between series leads Austin Butler, Poppy Drayton, Manu Bennett and Ivana Baquero.  They manage to elevate basic fantasy troupes into absorbing drama thanks to a precision-cut storyline that doesn't waste time moving the story along.

Also, with the show largely based on the second entry in the  The Original Shannara Trilogy, there will be plenty of moments and settings that those who have read the entire saga will recognize and appreciate.

If you like swords, magic and monsters then you may definitely want to consider adding the season one blu-ray to your Holiday Wish-List.

Synopsis:  Based on the 26-volume book series by Terry Brooks,The Shannara Chronicles tells the epic story of an Elvin princess, a bandit, and a half-Elf tasked with stopping the end of the world.  Created and executive produced by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar ('Smallville') and executive produced by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), the series is shot against the epic landscapes of New Zealand.

Audio & Subtitles:
·      5.1 Dolby TrueHD & Dolby Digital Stereo
·      English SDH Subtitles

Special Features:
·      Behind the Scenes

The thing about this show I do t understand was why it needed to be set in a future fantasy earth? Haven't seen it but I recall seeing this in the previews.

@Gmoney84 - The original series was written that way. The author had a specific idea and reason for doing so which wasnt realized until fairly recently.

My wife watched it and enjoyed it, I don't know much about it. Loved Xena and Hercules growing up.

Great to see Lucy Lawless in Ash Vs the Evil Dead, although they need to get Kevin Sorbo to cameo as well.

Tried watching this after my housemate raved about it. His commitment to certain series was questionable, but nevertheless - I decided to give it a try. The visuals were quite impressive for a TV series but I never made it to the second episode. It seems like they took a great idea for a show and "Smallville'd" it. In case you don't know what I mean by that - Smallville: Was a great show, with great potential and setting, ruined by unbearable teen angst and quickly turned into Days of Our Lives with the odd sprinkling of superhero hijinx.
The Shannara Chronicles: Could have been a great show, had great potential and setting, ruined by unbearable teen angst. Days of Our Lives in a fantasy setting. A fantasy soap opera for teenagers.

I couldn't get past episode 1.
I think I may have read only one Shannara book, and I struggled to get through it.
They're pretty cliche.

What's weird about this show is that completely deviates from the books in some very major ways, yet still manages to be good for a fan of the books. That's a rare experience for me, and I don't usually like drama either.
