Bloody Disgusting has learned that the new remake of
The Munsters will hardly resemble the original 1964 version that starred Fred Gwynne. That version was a light hearted comedy that focused on friendly monsters who never quite understood why the rest of society found them so strange.
In the NBC remake the family will be eating flesh and suicide victims. They have Eddie as a full blown werewolf. The show will be dark, but there will also be a comedic touch. The show, according to
Bloody Disgusting's source will resemble HBO's hit vampire show
True Blood and ABC's zany family comedy,
Modern Family.
I think the news that I dislike the most, is that Grandpa Munster won't be the lovable vampire. Based on the scoop from
BD he'll be a shape-shifter. When I think of Grandpa Munster I immediately think vamipire they go together like corn and mashed potatoes. Plus, the shape shifting effects never look good on a television budget. Although,
True Blood has been one of the few shows to get it to look halfway decent.

The pilot episode, which is to be directed by Bryan Singer - who also was behind the camera for the "House" pilot, Superman Returns and X-Men - will focus on 10-year-old Eddie Munster who is unaware that he's a werewolf, and that his family is composed of terrifying creatures. The madness begins when a baby bear attacks a scouting trip, only it turns out that this "bear" is actually Eddie transformed into a werewolf. Eddie is unaware of his metamorphosis and it forces the family to move in order to protect the family secret. The coming of age story gets weirder as he fights against his family when he learns of a shocker: they're a family of flesh-eaters!
A few other random character notes: Lily Munster has an eating disorder and eats suicide victims. Grandpa Munster is a 600-year-old shapeshifter, and Marilyn Munster was adopted when her mother tried to eat her as a baby.
